DEN WASIKSIRI, 143 pp. Khao Yai is Thailand's first and best known national park. It contains a wealth of natural attractions: Flora, Fauna, Vistas and waterfalls. The park was established in 1962 and is currently managed by National Parle, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department. Khao Yai has been declared a world heritage site as part of the Dong Phayayen Khao Yai Forest Complex under criterion (IV) in 2005 and was also previously declared an Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) heritage pad. in I 984. This research project attempts to increase understanding of the park, raise awareness regarding the condition of park tourism infrastructure and assist in future decision making process by providing a visitor's perspective. The most recent management plan for Khao Yai National Park 2007-2017 has not been received with enthusiasm. In this study the author encourages the review of the management plan, updating of master plan and the use of best practice guidelines for park management. It is hoped that the document contributes positively to park. management and visitors. Khao Yai National Park
Khao Yai National Park Khao Yai National Park was established as the first national park of Thailand in 1962. The national park covers a total area of 2,165.55 square kilometres in the four provinces of Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima and Saraburi. Consisting of large forested areas, scenic beauty and biological diversity, Khao Yai National Park, together with other protected areas within the Dong Phaya Yen mountain range, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Khao Yai or çBig Mountainé is home to a great diversity of flora and fauna, as well as pure beautiful nature. Geography A rugged mountain range dominates most areas of the park. Khao Rom is the highest peak towering at 1,351 metres above mean sea level. The region is the source of five main rivers, the Prachin Buri, acuminata, Vatica odorata, Shorea henryana, Hopea Nakhon Nayok, Lam Ta Khong, Lam Phra Phloeng ferrea, Tetrameles nudiflora, Pterocymbium tinctorium and Muak Lek stream. and Nephelium hypoleucum. Data came from 5-year remeasurements of continuous forest inventory plots. Six species groups were created according to diameter structure, tree growth, mortality, recruitment and light demand of species. A 5-year basal area increment model and logistic mortality model were calibrated for species groups. Potential predictor variables at tree-level and stand-level were selected based on the available data and their biological significance to tree growth and mortality. The resulting models possess desirable statistical properties and model behaviors, and can be used to update short- term inventory. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Virtual stands of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) across a range of structure types were stochastically generated and random sampling was simulated. We compared the bias and accuracy of stand quadratic mean diameter estimates, employing different ranks of measured stems from a set of the 10 trees nearest to the sampling point. We proposed several modifications of the original Weise’s rule based on the measurement and averaging of two different ranks centered to a target rank. -

Thailand (with short notes on Laos) 23 Dec 2006 – 7 Jan 2007 Björn Anderson General This was a combined family holiday and birding trip. We started off with a few days of general sightseeing around Luang Prabang in Laos before travelling south to well-known Khao Lak in peninsular Thailand. From there I made one half-day birding venture to Khao Sok National Park as well as the pilgrimage trip to Similan Island for the long-awaited Nicobar Pigeon. At the end of the trip I stayed on for a few more extra days and went to Khao Yai in order to pick up a few so-far missed birds. This proved highly successful and I managed to see the targeted Coral-billed Ground- Cuckoo, Siamese Fireback, Eared Pitta as well as an incredibly nice sighting of Oriental Bay-Owl. In addition to these I also encountered goodies such as Blue Pitta, Scaly-breasted Partridge and a selection of hornbills, barbets, etc. Myself (left) and displaying Siamese Fireback (the flapping guy to the right) Itinerary 23/12 We left Beijing in the early evening and arrived at Bangkok around 22.00 local time and quickly transferred to a nearby hotel. 24/12 In the morning we took a short range flight from Bangkok to Luang Prabang in Lao’s People Democratic Republic. At the local airport we swiftly arrange an open-air taxi that took us to our pre- booked hotel near the centre of town. Town is actually a bit of an exaggeration as it turned out that is was possible to walk all around the centre in less than an hour.
