The Story Of The Grilled Cheese Sandwich Maya Zankoul

It’s time for dinner. Today, Yara feels like having a grilled cheese sandwich.

Mom sliced a piece of akkawi* cheese, added shredded kashkaval*, and then grilled the sandwich! The cheese melted, and the smell was delicious. The sandwich is now ready.

*akkawi and kashkaval are melty white and yellow cheese eaten in Lebanon

Yara took her first bite, and the cheese started stretching! Stretching! Stretching! Until it went out the window, flying into the sky.

Above the clouds, a plane was passing by. The travelers couldn’t believe their eyes! They said: “what is this? melted cheese?”

The cheese continued its journey until it reached the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Some people were taking photos next to it and didn’t realize there was cheese in their photo!

After taking photos in Paris, the cheese reached London, where it hit Big Ben, which started ringing: Bong! Bong! Bong! And just like that, the cheese continued its journey around the world: • State of Liberty, New York • Taj Mahal, India • Machu Picchu, Peru • Pyramids, Egypt

• South Pole • Baalbeck, Lebanon • Burj Khalifa, Emirates • Great wall of China

This cheese sandwich became famous, and they talked about it on the news all over the world.

But after its long journey, suddenly, the cheese broke. And Yara was very happy to finally be able to continue her yummy dinner.

After dinner, Yara went to bed. Before she slept, Mom asked her: “What do you want to have for breakfast tomorrow?” Yara answered: “Tomorrow, I want to have cheese knefe* for breakfast!” *knefe is a dessert / sweet breakfast food made with cheese in a bun that melts when eaten hot (and is delicious too!)
