Course Course Title Lecturer Semester Credits Level Theory of Culture and Representation [2] Shunji HIOKI Full year (2)3 - 4 4 Course Topic: The World of Hayao Miyazaki Course Objective/Theme: The animations of Hayao Miyazaki are not adequately appreciated in Japan yet. Miyazaki’s works are established by adopting what can be called the essence of the history of various animation works of the world, such as by following the classic composition established by Disney and further developing it. With that as a technical foundation, his works highlight the twisted parent-child relationship of “lack a mother figure” or “absence of a mother” and establish expressions that are widely accepted by the contemporary audience. A universal awareness of the modern age is present, but at the same time, his works carry important messages that communicate the Japanese sensibility to the world. The goal and theme of this course is to understand these points. Course Outline: We will study the animations of Hayao Miyazaki. Centering on “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” we will conduct analyses on what art actually is, what an author is, etc., through watching the film. By analyzing the films, we will propose various ideas regarding methods or perspectives for researching literary works. We will also discuss literary works written by Sartre and Gide and Grimm’s Fairy Tales, etc. We will read through the works of Hayao Miyazaki from a wide-ranging perspective and by using various methods, such as by making comparisons with Disney animations. Lectures will be conducted based on the premise that all students have already seen the major works of Hayao Miyazaki.
