Emishi, similar to the other native tribes of Northern Japan are oft en seen as non- civilized barbar- ians as opposed to the Yamato race. 1 Th ough Princess Mononoke is set in the Muromachi period (1333– 1573), when the Yamato society had conquered all the Northern tribes, the strong Emishi village of Princess Mononoke recalls Japan’s pre- historic times. In the fi lm’s settings and details one can fi nd numer- ous examples of Miyazaki’s interest in anthropology, archaeology, Shint ō and nativism. -

Miyazaki: Anime Legend His Life and Work Instructor: Tristan Muntsinger [email protected] August 29, 2013 1 Course Description Hayao Miyazaki is Japan's and perhaps the world's greatest animation direc- tor of all time. The entertaining plots, compelling characters, and breathtak- ing animation in his films have earned him international renown from critics as well as public recognition within Japan. In this course, we will examine the aesthetic, thematic, and historical char- acteristics of each of his films. What social conflicts inspired his work? Who were the bases of his characters? Whom did he inspire? Besides his films, we will also briefly examine his other works, including shorts and TV series. The course is open to all interested students, no previous knowledge of Miyazaki or anime is assumed. 2 Course Requirements • No more than 2 unexcused absences (university policy) • Participate in discussions • Midterm exam that tests your understanding of course material • Final project presentation (very flexible in content) 1 3 Course Details 3.1 Lectures & Discussions We will have short lectures on Miyazaki's life and influences during the time of the work we're about to see. In discussion, we will critically analyze the film we last saw and relate it to his life and the time period. 3.2 Midterm Exam (Oct 14) This will be a closed everything midterm (okay, I'll let you bring a pencil) on the material covered in class up to this point. It will test students' knowledge of the background of the films seen so far as well as Miyazaki's beginnings. -

C h a p t e r 5 B RINGING IT A LL T OGETHER : S TUDIO G HIBLI Several months aft er the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga started its run in 1982, Miyazaki was hired, along with his colleagues Isao Takahata, Yasuo Ō tsuka, and Yoshifumi Kond ō , to take part in the production of Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland . Th e ambitious American/Japanese coproduction adapted the classic comic strip by cartoonist and animation pioneer Winsor McCay about a boy who, each night, goes on a strange adventure in his dreams. McCay’s work had many fans on both sides of the Pacifi c: in fact, the project was initiated by Japanese producer Yutaka Fujioka, the president of Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the studio that previously employed Miyazaki and Takahata on Moomins , the Panda! Go Panda! fi lms, and the Lupin productions. Many other notable fi gures have been involved with diff erent stages of the production including Jean Giraud, renowned science fi ction author Ray Bradbury, and screenwriter Chris Columbus (future director of the early Harry Potter fi lms). -

Suggested Series for Analysis SP.270 Spring 2004 This document lists a sample of the well-known or significant anime series (with few exceptions, 26+ episodes) released between 1963 and 1998. If you know very little about anime before 1998, consider one of the series listed below. All series are ordered by the original year broadcast (TV) or released (OVA). In addition, to locate the series for viewing, you can check availability from the sources listed. This list draws from the instructor’s personal knowledge, The Anime Encyclopedia, credit rolls, box information, and various websites on the Internet. You are no means constrained to this list. There are orders of magnitude more animation that you may select for your series analysis; this list is only a small sample. All errors are, of course, the instructor’s; if you discover an error, please notify him. Format: DVD (D), VHS (V), Digital Fansub (F). Unless listed otherwise, VHS tapes and Digital Fansubs are Japanese language dialogue with English subtitles. DVDs are Region 1 with Japanese and English dialogues, and English subtitles. Instructor (F): Available from the instructor’s collection, and placed in the Film Office in advance for student use. These titles will remain in the Film Office through Spring Break. Japanese anime series gets whirlwind showings in 7 days By Howard Pousner [email protected] When Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" won the Academy Award for best an- imated feature in 2003, it was considered not only a victory for Japanese anime but for hand-drawn anima- tion at a time when comput- ers were taking over "toons" everywhere. The Japanese filmmaker was hailed as a master visual storyteller. Reviewing the fantasy ep- ic in The Atlanta Journal- Constitution at the time, critic Eleanor Ringel Gil- lespie wrote: "If Lewis Car- roll were alive today, and making movies instead of writing books, 'Spirit- ed Away' is the movie he'd make. Not since he sent Al- ice tumbling down that rab- bit hole has there been such a rapturous mix of whimsy and the surreal."
