• The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

I’m Keith Foster. Ex-punk. This year in England the Queen has celebrated her golden jubilee – that’s fifty years on the throne… 25 years ago, in 1977, it was her Silver Jubilee, and people then had parties in the streets to celebrate. Then along came this band, the Sex Pistols, and spoilt the party. The song called the Queen a moron, and it made the Sex Pistols the most hated band in Britain - ever. Newspapers called for them to be put in prison, and in the end their record company sacked them. Twice. Suddenly, punk rock had made its mark. If you liked punk you liked loud music, an dance called the pogo, which meant just jumping up and down really, often on the person in front of you, and you put safety pins through your clothes, your ears, your nose, your cheeks, your…...well, anywhere. And you were angry. Very angry. Music mix: “Stranglehold” by UK Subs Oh Bondage Up Yours” by X-ray Spex “Anarchy in the UK” by Sex Pistols “Too drunk to fuck” by Dead Kennedys KF: You didn’t have to be very musical… Punk rock exploded in Britain in 1977. If you were a teenager almost everyone you knew picked up a guitar or a drum set and started to make a lot of noise.

Frankly, I’ve got a font Jones and spend way too much time routing about the web looking for new fonts, not unlike how driftwood artists scour the shores looking for new bleached branches. Christoph Mueller designed MOM’S TYPEWRITER by scanning in the output of his mother’s old machine. One of its charms is that it has neither a zero nor a one.

  • Midge Ure Biography
MIDGE URE BIOGRAPHY An artist who has received Ivor Novello, Grammy, BASCAP awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records, really needs very little introduction. Musical success is seldom measured in time spans of more than a few years, if not Andy Warhol's often quoted "fifteen minutes", so the fact that by the time Midge's single "If I Was" went to number 1 in 1985 he had already crammed several musical lifetimes into a 10 year professional career speaks volumes - Slik, The Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy, Visage, Ultravox and of course the most famous one off group in musical history Band Aid had by then all had the guiding hand of his musical navigation. Then you have to take account of Midge's musical directorship of a series of rock concerts for The Prince's Trust, Night of the Proms, Wicked Women for Breakthrough and in honour of Nelson Mandela; record production for Phil Lynott, Steve Harley and countless others; his video direction of memorable hits by the Fun Boy Three, Bananarama and others, or a whole swathe of landmark singles by Ultravox; TV, theatre and film music credits ranging from 'Max Headroom' to stage and big screen. Midge appeared to the wider public in a moment of heady teen success with Slik. Their sway-along single 'Forever And Ever' took over at No.1 in the UK from Abba's 'Mamma Mia' on Valentine's Day 1976. Soon outgrowing Slik's pop dimensions, Midge was snapped up by ex-Sex Pistol Glen Matlock the following year for his new outfit, the Rich Kids, who charted amid an avalanche of press with a self-titled EMI single early in 1978.
