We will admit to a certain trepidation towards modern social technology and media for the past few years but who are we not to take advantage of New York@Night something that can benefit our valued readers? Some of you may already have 4 guessed what this means while others are still scratching their heads, wondering what on earth “modern social technology” means. Anyway, we’ve started Interview: Danilo Pérez tweeting. Check us out on Twitter (@AAJNY) for pithy reviews of the various 6 by Terrell Holmes shows we attend nightly (and wonder if we ever sleep), just more evidence of how jazz in New York City is a simple matter of schedule and stamina. Artist Feature: Dado Moroni Of course we are still fully committed to so-called dead-only-to-survive print 7 by Thomas Conrad media and this issue is brimming full of our usual offerings, amazingly international in scope. NEW YORK February 2009 | No. 82 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene newyork.allaboutjazz.com CHICO HAMILTON JOYOUS SHOUT Charli Persip • Larry Ochs • Blue Note Records • Miller Theater • Event Calendar NEW YORK We hate to be the ones to temper all the post-election enthusiasm for potentially New York@Night more arts support, but it seems like the financial crisis facing the world has 4 trickled (or deluged) down into jazz. Recent reports indicate that Festival Network, which took over George Wein’s Festival Productions company last year, Interview: Charli Persip has laid off most its staff, making it uncertain if New York (or any other city for 6 by George Kanzler that matter) has seen its last JVC Jazz Festival. We will report more as we obtain Artist Feature: Larry Ochs information but this is a serious blow as jazz rarely got that level of exposure otherwise. Another, more personal casualty, is the dismissal of legendary jazz 7 by Marc Medwin journalist Nat Hentoff from the Village Voice after 50 years. His final column for Label Spotlight: Blue Note Records the once-proud counterculture rag was Jan. 6th, 2009. Hentoff will still continue writing for other outlets including, ironically, the Wall Street Journal. 8 by Joel Roberts But jazz as an art form has weathered such storms before and, honestly, how Club Profile: Miller Theater much smaller can its market share get anyway? It has become a music of perseverance, something to which drummers Chico Hamilton and Charli Persip by Marcia Hillman (On The Cover and Interview, respectively) and saxophonist Larry Ochs (Artist On The Cover: Chico Hamilton Feature) can attest.

I am William Alston Brower. I am here to interview Jimmy Cobb on behalf of the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program. We‟re in New York City at the Wells Hotel. Mr. Cobb, if you could – we want to go from the beginning. So would you introduce us to your parents? Jimmy: My mother is Katherine Bivens Cobb, and my father is Wilbur Cobb. They met somewhere around before I was born and got married and had me. He‟s from Carolina somewhere, and she‟s from southern Maryland. How they got together, I‟m not really sure about that. That‟s how it happened. They tell me I was born in Corcoran Street – 1515 Corcoran Street – in the basement. But I‟m not really sure of that even. Sometime I have to try to check that out myself. Every time I go by there I look and say, well, maybe that was where it was. Brower: That‟s in northwest Washington [D.C.] Jimmy: Yeah, northwest, 1515. In fact, in Corcoran Street, I lived in two or three – over my lifetime, I lived in about three blocks of Corcoran Street.
