Diapositiva 1 cicle de jazz BARCELONA SPRINGTIME SWING 1st Edition: Primavera de 2019 Cicle de tres concerts de piano-jazz a càrrec de tres solistes excepcionals, reconeguts a nivell internacional. @Enginyeria programa #JornadesEIC www.eic.cat BERND LHOTZKY Dijous, 14 de Març de 2019 – 20.00 h Música de "Fats Waller", James P. Johnson i Willie "The Lion" Smith L’stride és un estil pianístic que es va desenvolupar al New York dels anys vint del segle passat, combinant el virtuosisme instrumental amb un ritme vibrant i ple de swing. Bernd Lhotzky és, segurament, el pianista actual amb major capacitat per expressar-se brillantment en aquest difícil idioma. Nascut el 1970 a Tegernsee, Alemània, fill de pare alemany i mare francesa, va rebre la seva primera lliçó de piano als sis anys. El seu primerenc descobriment del Jazz no li va impedir continuar els seus estudis formals de música, incloent composició i harmonia, a més d’aprendre a tocar el violí, la viola, la trompeta i el contrabaix. Avui en dia encara segueix practicant la música "clàssica", malgrat que el seu cor batega a ritme de Jazz (són famoses les seves versions stride de clàssics de Chopin, Liszt o Bach). Gràcies a la seva impecable tècnica i gran sentit rítmic és capaç d’interpretar les composicions dels grans mestres de l’estil ("Fats", "The Lion", James P.) a la perfecció, però els darrers anys ha evolucionat aportant cada vegada més el seu toc personal, que també ha begut de les fonts de Art Tatum o Teddy Wilson. DADO MORONI Dijous, 11 d’abril de 2019 – 20.00 h Música d’Oscar Peterson i Ahmad Jamal Edgardo "Dado" Moroni va nèixer en 1962 a Gènova, Itàlia. Dado va començar a tocar el piano de forma autodidacta als quatre anys, treballava ja com a professional als catorze i va gravar el seu primer disc als disset. Durant els anys vuitanta va desenvolupar la seva carrera a Europa, tocant en Clubs i Festivals de Jazz i formant part, juntament amb el bateria Alvin Queen, del trio del contrabaixista Jimmy Woode. El 1991 es va traslladar a viure als Estats Units, integrant-se al ambient jazzístic de New York, i treballant com a solista o músic d’acompanyament en els més prestigiosos locals de la ciutat com Blue Note, Birdland o Village Vanguard, a més de @Enginyeria programa #JornadesEIC www.eic.cat participar en nombroses sessions de gravació. Pianista respectat per tots els seus col•legues d’ambdós costats de l’Atlàntic, tot just tenia 25 anys quan va ser anomenat jurat a la primera edició del prestigiós Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Durant la seva extensa carrera Dado ha tingut l’oportunitat de treballar amb algunes de les grans llegendes del Jazz, com Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Chet Baker, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Zoot Sims, Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Joe Henderson, Clifford Jordan, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Red Mitchell, Ed Thigpen, Kenny Clarke, Grady Tate, Oliver Jackson ó Alvin Queen. També ha tingut la oportunitat d’actuar a duo amb alguns dels seus col•legues més llegendaris, com Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Mulgrew Miller, Eric Reed ó Kenny Barron.. BENNY GREEN Dijous, 9 de maig de 2019 – 20.00 h Música de Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn i Thelonious Monk Benny Green va nèixer a New York el 1963, però es va criar a Berkeley, California, on va iniciar els seus estudis de piano a l’edat de set anys. Influenciat pel seu pare, saxofonista, Benny es va interessar aviat pel Jazz. Abans dels setze anys va treballar esporàdicament amb cantants com Fay Carroll i va col•laborar amb el trompetista Eddie Henderson. El 1982 va tornar a New York, on va conèixer al veterà pianista Walter Bishop, una de les seves màximes influències. Entre 1983 i 1987 va treballar com acompanyant de la cantant Betty Carter i, el 1987, es va unir als Jazz Messengers d’Art Blakey, on va restar fins 1989, moment en que va entrar a formar part del quintet de Freddy Hubbard. Apadrinat per Oscar Peterson, Green va obtenir el 1993 el Glenn Gould International Protégé Price, un prestigiós premi atorgat per la Fundació Glenn Gould i la ciutat de Toronto. Aquell mateix any, Green va reemplaçar a Gene Harris en el trio de Ray Brown, on va restar fins a 1997. A partir d’aquell moment, el pianista va iniciar la seva carrera en solitari, actuant al front dels seus trios, en format de piano solo –el seu preferit- o formant duo amb Eric Reed o Kenny Barron. És un dels pianistes contemporanis amb més presència al mercat discogràfic, havent participat en més de cent sessions de gravació.     Edgardo Dado Moroni nasce a Genova nel 1962 e venne in contatto con la musica jazz molto presto, la sua carriera professionistica decollò all'età di 14 anni, suonando in tutta Italia con alcuni dei più importanti musicisti italiani come Franco Cerri, Tullio De Piscopo, Luciano Milanese, Gianni Basso, Sergio Fanni e Massimo Urbani e Tullio de Piscopo. All'età di 17 anni registrò il suo primo album in trio con Tullio de Piscopo e il bassista americano Julius Farmer e a 18 la seconda fatica discografica, “Bluesology” lo vide affiancato dal trombettista Franco Ambrosetti, il bassista Niels Henning Oersted Pedersen e ancora il grande Tullio De Piscopo alla batteria Nel 1983, al Sanremo Jazz Festival, incontrò il bassista Jimmy Woodie e il trombettista Harry Sweets Edison. Dado si unì al Jimmy Woode Trio, con Alvin Queen e Sangoma Everett che si alternavano alla batteria e viaggiò in tutta Europa accompagnando giganti del jazz come Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Freddie Hubbard, Bud Shank, Buddy De Franco, Zoot Sims e molti altri. Con il giovane e talentuoso sassofonista George Robert, Dado iniziò una lunga amicizia e collaborazione. Nel 1987 fondarono il “George Robert/Tom Harrell Quintet”. Nel 1987 l' incontro di Dado con la leggenda del contrabasso Ray Brown produsse la formazione del Trio “Two Bass Hits” con uno dei suoi più talentuosi protégé, Pierre Boussaguet. Nello stesso anno Dado incise il suo primo album newyorkese con l'altro master del contrabbasso Ron Carter (“Ron Carter presents Dado Moroni” con Grady Tate e Gene Bertoncini) per l'etichetta Emarcy Japan. Inoltre venne invitato come pianista per la tournée estiva della Mingus Dynasty, la Paris Reunion Band e come giudice al fianco di Sir Roland Hanna, Hank Jones, Barry Harris and Roger Kellaway, per il primo Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition, vinto dal pianista Marcus Roberts.

Recent reports indicate that Festival Network, which took over George Wein’s Festival Productions company last year, Interview: Charli Persip has laid off most its staff, making it uncertain if New York (or any other city for 6 by George Kanzler that matter) has seen its last JVC Jazz Festival. We will report more as we obtain Artist Feature: Larry Ochs information but this is a serious blow as jazz rarely got that level of exposure otherwise. Another, more personal casualty, is the dismissal of legendary jazz 7 by Marc Medwin journalist Nat Hentoff from the Village Voice after 50 years. His final column for Label Spotlight: Blue Note Records the once-proud counterculture rag was Jan. 6th, 2009. Hentoff will still continue writing for other outlets including, ironically, the Wall Street Journal. 8 by Joel Roberts But jazz as an art form has weathered such storms before and, honestly, how Club Profile: Miller Theater much smaller can its market share get anyway? Dado Moroni Trio Dado Moroni – pianoforte è uno dei pochissimi musicisti italiani la cui biografia è inserita nell’importante “Biographical Enciclopedia of Jazz” di Leonard Feather e Ira Gitler. Ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte all’età di 4 anni da autodidatta. Negli anni successivi ha suonato come professionista in diverse parti d’Italia e, all’età di 17 anni, ha registrato il suo primo album ed ha iniziato una collaborazione con Tullio de Piscopo e Franco Ambrosetti che dura tuttora. Negli anni ’80 Moroni si è esibito in Europa suonando in diversi festival e club, portando avanti una lunga collaborazione con il trio del bassista di Duke Ellington Jimmy Woode al Widden Bar di Zurigo. Vista il suo grande talento musicale, all’età di 25 anni viene invitato come unico musicista europeo a far parte della giuria del premio internazionale pianistico Thelonious Monk tenutosi a Washington nel 1987.

I am William Alston Brower. I am here to interview Jimmy Cobb on behalf of the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program. We‟re in New York City at the Wells Hotel. Mr. Cobb, if you could – we want to go from the beginning. So would you introduce us to your parents? Jimmy: My mother is Katherine Bivens Cobb, and my father is Wilbur Cobb. They met somewhere around before I was born and got married and had me. He‟s from Carolina somewhere, and she‟s from southern Maryland. How they got together, I‟m not really sure about that. That‟s how it happened. They tell me I was born in Corcoran Street – 1515 Corcoran Street – in the basement. But I‟m not really sure of that even. Sometime I have to try to check that out myself.
