Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) Executive Oicer (XO) Christopher Zayatz, mem- bers of the NSASP Environmental Department, and third and fourth graders from the Dahlgren School planted trees and cleaned up the Potomac River shoreline at an Earth Day event on Naval Support Facility (NSF) Dahlgren. Zayatz read the oicial proclamation for the event in which Capt. Mary Fein- berg, commanding oicer of NSASP declared for ev- ery one tree removed from NSASP, two trees will be planted. Two native willow oaks were planted by the enthusiastic students who took turns shoveling the soil along with Zayatz. he trees are located on the knoll by the Willow Oaks Constructed Storm Water Treatment Wetlands on Sampson Road. Following the tree planting, the group headed to the shoreline of of Sampson Road and spent over an hour scouring the area for trash. heir eforts in- cluded three tires, large boards, barbed wire, rebar and lots of plastic bottles and bags. he shoreline clean up and tree planting along with similar events at NSF Indian Head are just some of the many ways that NSASP has done their part to “green-up” the en- vironment as a part of the larger Earth Day initiatives.

Volunteers, including Marines from the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), hit the shoreline at Naval Sup- port Facility (NSF) Indian Head last week to take part in the an- nual beach clean-up celebrating National Earth Month. Crews of nearly 60 volunteers worked along nearly a mile of shoreline at the installation and collected 80 bags of trash, 6 tires, and 6 sy- ringes totaling over 480 lbs. of trash . he clean-up efort coincides with the yearly Potomac Watershed Cleanup held all along the Potomac River.
