  • History of the Ormonde
WELCOME TO THE ORMONDE GUESTHOUSE THE ORMONDE GUESTHOUSE HISTORY Former Railway Tavern public house, later renamed as the Ormonde tavern. Late 19th, early 20th century. Two storey, 3 bay semi symmetrical arrangement with projecting terminal end bays, timber framed gables to projecting bays. Slate roof, 1st floor timber framed. Ground floor Ruabon brick with stone dressings to window heads, cheeks and cills, casement windows with leaded transome lights. This building is now the Ormonde Hotel. "Ormonde" (1883–1904) was an English Thoroughbred racehorse, an unbeaten Triple Crown winner, generally considered to be one of the greatest racehorses ever. He also won the Champion Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes twice. At the time he was often labeled as the 'horse of the century'. Ormonde was trained at Kingsclere by John Porter for the 1st Duke of Westminster. His regular jockeys were Fred Archer (who features on the sign outside the hotel in the correct colours) and Tom Cannon. After retiring from racing he suffered fertility problems, but still sired Orme, who won the Eclipse Stakes twice. It has been suggested that "Ormonde's" sire was the model for "Silver Blaze" in the Sherlock Holmes story of the same name, first published 1892. In the same way, "Colonel Ross" in the story is said to be based on one of the Grosvenors - the first Duke of Westminster. Eaton Stud bred "Ormonde" with Fred Archer up. Fred Archer (1857-86) had 21 Classic winners and was Champion Jockey 13 of his 17 years, before tragically committing suicide in 1886. To keep his weight down for racing he used "Archer's mixture", a powerful laxitive made up by Dr J.

  • EB42 a Short History of Findon and the Racehorse
A short history of Findon and the racehorse 1 At the start of the 19C race meetings were held on the downland gallops below Blackpatch Hill at the western edge of Findon parish, the course being known as Michel Grove (an estate mainly in the neighbouring Clapham and Patching parishes). Later in the century race meetings were held on the gallops below West Hill at the south west end of Findon parish. In the 19C horse racing featured much more in ordinary rural life than it does today, as the horse was still vital to agricultural activities and local transport. Knowledge of race horses in training was wide and racing was keenly followed as a sport and an opportunity for social gatherings, Race meetings were also being held on the downs at Lewes at this time and on the downs at Goodwood and Brighton in Sussex which still hold meetings today, like Epsom, Ascot, Sandown and Lingfield in Surrey. Fontwell and Plumpton in Sussex still hold regular national hunt race meetings over hurdles and fences while the race meetings at Newbury in Berkshire and Cheltenham attract the highest quality national hunt horses. Around 1853-1854 Henry Padwick, a well known member of the Danebury ‘Confederacy’, a very successful group of individuals that sent out many ‘Classic’ winners from the racing stables at Danebury, near Stockbridge racecourse in Hampshire, built new brick and flint stables and a trainer’s house, at the top of Stable Lane, Findon on the site of a cottage and outbuildings which appear on the 1839 Tithe Map.

P ARK HOUSE STABLES SUMMER MAGAZINE 2020 INTRODUCTION P ARK HOUSE STABLES has been a difficult year for so many people, we have to put racing’s trials and tribulations into 2020 perspective. Compared to the huge personal tragedy that COVID-19 has brought to many, our own inconveniences have thankfully been limited to just that. The return of racing in June was welcomed with open arms and great credit must go to all those on the resumption of racing committee, which included representatives from the BHA, racecourses and many others. On the home front, our own ‘Covid Committee’ of Tessa, Anna Lisa and Nigel did a fantastic job of ensuring that we could continue to train the horses pretty much as normal whilst adhering to all the government guidelines. Regular temperature checks have always been in practice amongst Kingsclere’s horse inhabitants but are now the norm for the staff as well and this, combined with other precautions, has helped make Above: Promising 2yo KNIGHT SALUTE scores for Sheikh the workplace as safe as practicable in the circumstances.
