From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.

It started with a passing remark in Gilles Deleuze’s 1981 book Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation. That remark concerned the cliché. The psychic clichés within us all. The greatest accomplishment of the mind is thinking, which according to Deleuze means clawing through and beyond the cliché. But how? I found in my research that higher education art schools (like the higher education English departments in which I had for years taught) claim to teach thinking, sometimes written as “critical thinking,” in addition to all the necessary skills of artmaking. For this dissertation, I set off on a journey to understand what thinking is, finding that Deleuze’s study of the dogmatic image of thought and its challenger, the new image of thought—a study he calls noo-ology—to be quite useful in understanding the history of the cliché and originality, and for understanding a problematic within the part of art education that purports to use Deleuzian concepts toward original thinking/artmaking. This document is both about original contributions to any field and is my original contribution to the field.

I was recently stranded there for 2 days because of the weather and used the time to meet with some people that I worked with when I was an undergraduate. While walking around campus it became abundantly clear to me that in the year since I was last there the computing environment had undergone a radical change. The purpose of this memo is just to show how much can be done in a short time using mostly free software. The key backbone, as we will see, is the universal adoption of the TCP/IP protocol along with a large number of free interfaces and protocols. J Allard has written an excellent memo that gives a brief overview of the main services available on today’s Internet. He also includes some detailed recommendations to Microsoft to follow. I have some similar recommendations at the end of this document. I apologize in advance if I sound a little bit like a Cornell cheerleader or romanticize a bit too much. This is my alma mater after all (‘87). I am in an interesting position to observe the changes outlined in the memo since I was at Cornell just prior to the introduction of the Macintosh and worked for the information technology group for the four years that I was a student.
