Nataraja is other name of Shiva. He is in the dancing pose. Nataraja has Damaru in his one hand. Damaru is a small two-headed drum, used in many Indian, Buddhist and Tibetan traditions. Damru is known as the instrument of Lord Shiva. Damaru was first created by OBE-Bharatiya Jnana Parampara 59 Maheshwara Sutras CLASS-III Shiva to produce different sounds. Sanskrit Alphabets origined from the sound of the Damaru of the Lord Shiva called Maheswara Sutras. Notes Mãhesvara Sutrani is fourteen verses that organize the phonemes of Sanskrit as referred to in the Astadhyayi of Panini, the foundational text of Sanskrit grammar. A famous verse in Sage Panini's Ashtadhyayi says that the Panini grammar that is in use now is graced by Lord Shiva. Hence the first known organized sounds are known as the Maheshvara Sutra - Maheshvara being another name of Lord Shiva. -

Cultures of Instrument Making in Assam Upatyaka Dutta As Assam slowly recovers from the double whammy of COVID-19 pandemic and floods, I utilized every little opportunity to visit instrument makers living in the interior villages of Assam. My first visit was made to a Satra (Neo-vaishnavite monastery) by the name of Balipukhuri Satra on the outskirts of Tezpur (Sonitpur district), the cultural capital of Assam. There in the Satra, the family introduced me to three hundred years old folk instruments. A Sarinda, which is an archaic bowed string instrument, turns out to be one of their most prized possessions. Nobody in the family is an instrument maker, however, their ancestors had received the musical instruments from an Ahom king almost three hundred years back. The Sarinda remains in a dilapidated condition, with not much interest given to its restoration. Thus, the sole purpose that the instrument is serving is ornamentation. Fig 1: The remains of a Sarinda at Balipukhuri Satra The week after that was my visit to a village in Puranigudam, situated in Nagaon district of Assam. Two worshippers of Lord Shiva, Mr. Golap Bora and Mr. Prafulla Das, told tales of Assamese folk instruments they make and serenaded me with folk songs of Assam. Just before lunchtime, I visited Mr. Kaliram Bora and he helped me explore a range of Assamese instruments, the most interesting among which is the Kali. The Kali is a brass musical instrument. In addition to making instruments, Kaliram Bora is a well-known teacher of the Kali and has been working with the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama’s Guru-shishya Parampara system of schools to imbibe education in Kali to select students of Assam. -

Most of the regions of India, it is used for worship of god as well as in many festivals. Pa- lash is pungent (katu), bitter (tikta) and astringent (kashay) in taste (Rasa), and its vipaka is katu and veerya is ushna. It alleviates kapha and vata doshas, but aggravates the pitta doshas. The flowers of Palash are bitter (tikta), pungent (katu) and astringent (kashay) in test (Rasa), madhur vipaka and sheeta veerya. So it alleviates pitta and kapha dosha and vata doshas. In literature it is found that Palash is useful in many diseases like Trishna (Thrust), Atisara (Diarrhoea), Pradara (leucorrhea), Jwara (fever), Charmarog (Skin diseases), Asti- banga (Fracture), Vatarakta (gout), Kushta (Leprosy), Apasmara (epilepsy), Prameha (Diabetic). There has been worldwide renewal of interest in herbal system of medicines. Palash (Butea monosperma (Lamk.)Taub) has been widely used in the traditional Indian medical system of ‘Ayurveda’ for the treatment of a variety of ailments. It is very essentials to have a proper documentation of such useful medicinal plants. In this review an attempt to compile and document information from literature on Palash. [VOL II] JOURNAL OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY STUDIES [ISSUE II] TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND INDIA’S BACKBEND ON YOGA RASHMI RAGHAVAN ABSTRACT One of the biggest global trends of the 21st Century is that of practising Yoga, due to its physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Developed in India almost two millennia ago, its spread to the West has increased the number of practitioners as well as made it a commercially successful business. Any business can grow only in a strong intellectual property regime. The appropriate categorization of Yoga in any IP regime is highly disputed when it becomes the subject of copyright and trademark infringement lawsuits. Yoga, by and large is traditional knowledge, as it is an informational system giving a well- defined procedure in terms of postures, breathing techniques and a holistic philosophy to raise the standard of mankind. However, the law in terms of traditional knowledge has been sui generis because the WIPO Negotiations of the Intergovernmental Committee (‘IGC’) on Traditional Knowledge ('TK’) has been unable to create an international instrument for the protection and exercise of rights of indigenous communities who claim to be collective owners of these types of TK. The situation becomes extremely precarious when knowledge like Yoga becomes widely diffused outside the community where it originated to claim monetary or moral rights over them. The author argues that Yoga as a comprehensive system fits well within the current definition of Traditional Knowledge as an Intellectual Property. However, due to its widespread nature and easy accessibility, it cannot gain as high a ground for protection as secret or sacred traditional knowledge is currently granted.
