Sports News: Gulf Shore students recently competed in the Zone 3 Badminton Tournament at various schools in the Charlottetown area. Although no Gulf Shore students advanced to the Provincial Championships, all played competitively in their various categories. Reese Wyand (4th) and Daphne Gallant (3rd) were the highest finishers in the Zone competition, where only the top two finishers advance to the Provincial finals. Students are now practicing their running, throwing and jumping skills in preparation for Zone Track and Field competition. The Zone Meet for Grade 7-8-9 students will be held on Thursday, May 17th, while the Grade 4-5-6 Zone Meet will be held on Monday, May 28th. Team selection for the Grades 4-5-6 competition will be determined by the Gulf Shore Track and Field meet, which will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd. The top two finishers in each category will make up our track team. Both Zone Competitions and the Provincial Championships will be held at the Canada Games Track at UPEI. Gulf Shore will also be competing in the Intermediate Flag Football League, where they will have a girls’ team in the “AA” Division. Competition begins the week of May 7th and carries on to the middle of June. Children’s Wish Walk: On Friday, May 18th, the students will take part in our Annual Children’s Wish Walk. Pledge sheets will go home with students on May 9th and are due to be returned by May 25th. We ask that students return these sheets regardless if they collect any money. Further information concerning this event will be posted on our website at a later date. Community Service Projects’ Showcase: Ms. Skeffington's Intermediate 7/8/9 English class would like to invite members of the community to their Community Service Projects' Showcase. Come and talk with our students to hear about their projects, their work and their learning. We would like to thank the numerous community organizations, businesses, and mentors that have been so supportive of these projects throughout the year. Some of these include; Gulf Shore Community Health Board, The Town of North Rustico council, Home Hardware, Cymbria and North Rustico Lions Clubs, Canada's Smartest Kitchen, Villa Marguerite, CBC, and The Northern Star. Band Trip: Our grade 7-9 concert band will be traveling to the Cape Breton from May 24th - 26th In addition to giving performances and a workshop with renowned music educator, Barb Stetter, the students will also learn about Celtic music in Judique, participate in a square dance, visit the Miner's Museum in Glace Bay, the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, hike to a waterfall and see a live musical performance in Sydney. Book Sale: Our Grade 3 class will be hosting a book sale on Tuesday, May 29th at the school. Students from K-9 will be asked to donate gently used books for this fundraiser. These books will then be sold back to students for .25 cents each. This initiative provides students with "new" books at very reasonable prices while also raising money for local charities. In the past, all money raised has been donated to local charities, including the Children's Wish Foundation, Stella Maris Food Bank, and the CU Afterschool program, just to name a few. The charity of choice will be determined by grade three students later this month. Thank you for your support.
