[email protected] Abstract: The 80 paintings of Australian flora, fauna and landscapes by English artist Marianne North (1830-1890), completed during her travels in 1880–1881, provide a record of the Australian environment rarely presented by artists at that time. In the words of her mentor Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, director of Kew Gardens, North’s objective was to capture landscapes that were ‘doomed shortly to disappear before the axe and the forest fires, the plough and the flock, or the ever advancing settler or colonist’. In addition to her paintings, North wrote books recollecting her travels, in which she presented her observations and explained the relevance of her paintings, within the principles of a ‘Darwinian vision,’ and inevitable and rapid environmental change. By examining her paintings and writings together, North’s works provide a documented narrative of the state of the Australian environment in the late nineteenth- century, filtered through the themes of personal botanical discovery, colonial expansion and British imperialism. THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister approved this conservation advice and included this species in the Endangered category, effective from 11/05/2018. Conservation Advice Acacia wilsonii Wilson’s wattle Summary of assessment Conservation status Acacia wilsonii has been found to be eligible for listing in the Endangered category, as outlined in the attached assessment. Reason for conservation assessment by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee This advice follows assessment of information provided by Western Australia as part of the Common Assessment Method process, to systematically review species that are inconsistently listed under the EPBC Act and relevant state/territory legislation or lists. More information on the Common Assessment Method is available at: http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/threatened/cam The information in this assessment has been compiled by the relevant state/territory government. In adopting this assessment under the EPBC Act, this document forms the Approved Conservation Advice for this species as required under s266B of the EPBC Act. Public consultation Notice of the proposed amendment and a consultation document was made available for public comment for 33 business days between 3 October 2017 and 16 November 2017. Any comments received that were relevant to the survival of the species were considered by the Committee as part of the assessment process. Recovery plan A recovery plan for this species under the EPBC Act is not recommended, because the Approved Conservation Advice provides sufficient direction to implement priority actions and mitigate against key threats. The relevant state/territory may decide to develop a plan under its equivalent legislation. -

INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN NO. 329 WILSON’S WATTLE (Acacia wilsonii) INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN 2012–2017 October 2012 Department of Environment and Conservation Kensington Interim Recovery Plan for Acacia wilsonii FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. Note: Note: the Department of CALM formally became the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) in July 2006. DEC will continue to adhere to these Policy Statements until they are revised and reissued. Plans outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. DEC is committed to ensuring that Threatened taxa are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans (RPs) or IRPs, and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and, in the case of Critically Endangered taxa, always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This plan will operate from October 2012 to September 2017 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the taxon is still ranked as Endangered, this plan will be reviewed after five years and the need for further recovery actions assessed. This plan was given regional approval on 24 September 2012 and was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation on 30 October 2012. The provision of funds identified in this plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting DEC, as well as the need to address other priorities. -

ACorresponding author; email: [email protected] Abstract: The resprouting response of plant species to fire is a key life history trait that has profound effects on post-fire population dynamics and community composition. This study documents the post-fire response (resprouting and maturation times) of woody species in six contrasting formations in the New England Tableland Bioregion of eastern Australia. Rainforest had the highest proportion of resprouting woody taxa and rocky outcrops had the lowest. Surprisingly, no significant difference in the median maturation length was found among habitats, but the communities varied in the range of maturation times. Within these communities, seedlings of species killed by fire, mature faster than seedlings of species that resprout. The slowest maturing species were those that have canopy held seed banks and were killed by fire, and these were used as indicator species to examine fire immaturity risk. Finally, we examine whether current fire management immaturity thresholds appear to be appropriate for these communities and find they need to be amended. Members have reported little useful rainfall for the entire summer with inland NSW and Victoria/South Australia suffering through one of their driest summers on record. Our January was the hottest and driest on record and February is shaping up the same way. I know 'that Perth has also had many very hot days and I wonder how everyone's dryandras are surviving. I've lost a lot of small seedlings (maybe Autumn is the best time to grow dryandras, even in southern Victoria) although everything in the garden apart from one D.nervosu has so far survived. I'd be interested in reports on how your dryandras have handled this summer, in particular information on species which appear to be especially reliable. I have not paginated this newsletter in the usual way because of the various sections you might wish to remove. Margaret has prepared an excellent summary of the main characteristics of that (now) very confasing group of dryandras in subgenus Niveae. Together with the leaf prints, this should help make recognition of many of these species a little easier. New member David Lightfoot has given us another index to compliment the excellent species index prepared by David Randall. Thanks, David, I'm sure that everyone will find it helpful. Just looking through it, I was surprised at just how many topics we'd covered in the 31 issues of the Newsletter up to now.
