As America closes the chapter on the Trump era, millions across the nation are breathing a collective sigh of relief. The incessant barrage of headlines fi xating on the one-term, twice-impeached president’s infl ammatory words, tweets and policies have exacted a heavy toll. American Muslims, in particular, won’t soon forget that four years ago, after taking his oath of offi ce to uphold the Constitution, one of Donald Trump’s fi rst orders of business was to violate the value of religious freedom enshrined within that charter by signing into law his discriminatory Muslim travel ban executive order. The fi rst iteration of the executive order mandated a 90-day moratorium on the entry of nationals from seven Muslim majority countries, an indefi nite moratorium on the entry of Syrian refugees Malta hails Qatar’s leading and a 120-day moratorium on the entry of all other refugees. When Trump enacted the travel ban, he was making good on a promise he’d made on the campaign trail to call for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can fi gure out what is going on.” The ban went into eff ect on Friday, January 27, 2017, and chaos role in crisis resolution erupted immediately after. Trump’s executive order suff ered multiple legal setbacks in the courts, leading to several iterations – all fundamentally rooted in the same discriminatory intent. And, shamefully, the Supreme Court ultimately voted to uphold Muslim Ban 3.0 in a 5-4 ruling made June 26, 2018. Trump’s animus toward Muslims manifested far beyond this executive order and included approval of surveilling US mosques and establishing a Muslim registry. Among President Joe Biden’s fi rst actions in offi ce, is repealing Trump’s travel ban, which ultimately imposed restrictions on more than a dozen countries. Biden has vowed to push lawmakers to fi ght the surge in hate crimes across the country. And he’s promised to honour American Muslims’ contributions, seek out our ideas, and take our input into consideration, especially when crafting policies that impact our communities. After years of challenging toxic rhetoric and attacks from the highest offi ce within our government, these commitments are a refreshing change in tone, and American Muslim leaders look forward to holding the incoming administration accountable. – Tribune News Service

Due to low visibility in most areas of the country, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) advised commuters to drive with caution and urged them to “buckle up, slow down your vehicle and maintain a reason- able, safe distance”. The MoI added that “driving in bad weather conditions such as dust storms requires extra care and attention to avoid road accidents”. “To enhance your safety on the road during bad weather, we advise you to be cautious and attentive and not to get distracted with other than driving.” Some businesses and activities at some locations in Doha and the Sealine area were also aff ected by the dust storm, temporarily halting or slowing down their operations yesterday, it is learnt. In a post on Twitter, the Qatar Met department said: “We are ob- serving a decrease in the horizontal visibility in most regions of the country, and currently reaching 2km in the capital.” “Most areas of the country are aff ected by northwesterly winds, from fresh to strong, which lead to blowing dust and dusty weather sometimes, especially during daytime hours. The inclement weather also prevented some people, especially those with respiratory problems, from going to markets. Instead, they opted for online shopping and home delivery.
