On behalf of the Boards of Gov- ernors, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the president and the people of the United States of America for their hospitality. I would also like to extend our deep gratitude to the authorities and the people of Washington, D.C. for hosting these meetings. Let me also extend a special welcome to the newest member of the Fund and the World Bank Group, the newly independent nation of East Timor. There is much to be accomplished during these meetings, and we will all need to work together if we are to make tangible progress. I come from a region where we fully recognize that we need to cooperate with our neighbors to address issues of common concern and to strengthen and deepen relationships. The Sultanate of Oman has devel- oped rapidly during the last 30 years by achieving the stability that comes from the collective cooperation of our people and from working together with our regional neighbors and key trading partners. The economic development of Oman has been achieved by main- taining a strict fiscal policy and by ensuring that inflation is kept under control. In more recent years, there has also been a strong drive for pri- vatization. Oman has encouraged international investors to participate in the expansion of the power sector. We have also encouraged interna- tional investors to participate in the privatization of the management, operation, and maintenance of our main air and sea ports to ensure the efficient use of our national assets. We have also cooperated with a number of international institutions to update our legal and health sys- tems and to improve education. At the regional level, Oman is cooperating with our neighbors in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to harmonize our economic policies. We are also working to achieve the GCC customs union by January 2003. Oman is a strong advocate of international cooperation as the best way to tackle the various challenges facing us all. 1 Part-I.pdf 7/15/03 9:44 AM Page 2 Managing Global Integration through Increased International Cooperation Fellow Governors, an outstanding fact of our world today is its growing integration and interdependence. The process of globalization has presented our countries with tremendous opportunities for growth and prosperity but has introduced new risks as well. As this global inte- gration deepens, concerted action on the part of developed and devel- oping countries, national and international authorities, and the public and private sectors alike is needed to ensure that the benefits of global- ization are shared by all.

  • Maldives: Extremism and Terrorism
Maldives: Extremism and Terrorism On May 6, 2021, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated outside of the Malé home of former President Mohamed Nasheed. Nasheed and four others, including a British national, were injured in the attack. On May 7, Maldivian police reported that Islamic extremists were responsible for the attack. The police suspect four individuals were behind the attack, having arrested three of the four suspects by May 9. Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives and who is current the speaker of Parliament, has been an outspoken critic of religious extremism. Investigators have not yet determined which group was responsible for the attack. (Sources: Associated Press, Associated Press, Al Jazeera) On April 20, 2020, ISIS published a letter in their third issue of Voice of Hind magazine calling on Maldivians to join the jihad and to carry out extremist acts in the Maldives and India. The letter was in response to an ISIS-claimed attack on the Mahibadhoo harbor a few days prior. (Sources: Small Wars Journal, Middle East Media Research Institute) On April 17, 2020, five bombs detonated at Mahibadhoo harbor, destroying a sea ambulance, four speedboats, and two dinghies. ISIS quickly claimed responsibility for the attack via its weekly Arabic-language newsletter, al-Naba, claiming the boats belonged to the “apostate Maldivian Government and its loyalists.” The attack was the first to be carried out by ISIS in the Maldives. Earlier this year on February 4, a group of ISIS- inspired assailants stabbed and injured three foreign nationals near the Hulhumale Redbull Park Fustal Ground in North Male Atoll.

  • Robfreeman Recordingramones
Rob Freeman (center) recording Ramones at Plaza Sound Studios 1976 THIRTY YEARS AGO Ramones collided with a piece of 2” magnetic tape like a downhill semi with no brakes slamming into a brick wall. While many memories of recording the Ramones’ first album remain vivid, others, undoubtedly, have dulled or even faded away. This might be due in part to the passing of years, but, moreover, I attribute it to the fact that the entire experience flew through my life at the breakneck speed of one of the band’s rapid-fire songs following a heady “One, two, three, four!” Most album recording projects of the day averaged four to six weeks to complete; Ramones, with its purported budget of only $6000, zoomed by in just over a week— start to finish, mixed and remixed. Much has been documented about the Ramones since their first album rocked the New York punk scene. A Google search of the Internet yields untold numbers of web pages filled with a myriad of Ramones facts and an equal number of fictions. (No, Ramones was not recorded on the Radio City Music Hall stage as is so widely reported…read on.) But my perspective on recording Ramones is unique, and I hope to provide some insight of a different nature. I paint my recollections in broad strokes with the following… It was snowy and cold as usual in early February 1976. The trek up to Plaza Sound Studios followed its usual path: an escape into the warm refuge of Radio City Music Hall through the stage door entrance, a slow creep up the private elevator to the sixth floor, a trudge up another flight
