2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship 5 The Allstate Sugar Bowl For the Good of New Orleans The Allstate Sugar Bowl, which hosted the 84th edition of its football classic on January 1, 2018, is composed of more than 100 volunteer members whose sole purpose is to sponsor and promote amateur sporting events and foster revenue to spark economic growth in New Orleans and Louisiana . Colonel James M . Thompson, publisher of The New Orleans Item, and sports editor Fred Digby first presented the idea of a New Year’s Day football classic for New Orleans in 1927 . After many years of hard work, the idea came to fruition during the depths of the Great Depression, with the first Sugar Bowl Classic being played on January 1, 1935 between Tulane and Temple . The event has gone on to survive many difficulties, including a World War and a devastating hurricane, to establish itself as one of the most uniquely successful amateur athletic achievements in the history of American sports . From its inception, the Sugar Bowl Committee, originally known as the Mid-Winter Sports Association, has been free of political entanglement . Under the charter it was stipulated that it was to be a “voluntary, non-profit civic organization whose members serve without remuneration .” In practice, this means that every Sugar Bowler buys his/her own tickets to all events . While the Sugar Bowl Committee is known for its outstanding tradition of providing the best action that college football has to offer, the Sugar Bowl is more than just a football game – a whole lot more . The work of the Sugar Bowl’s volunteer membership is evident in the many different sporting events the committee sponsors each year . In addition to holding a prominent position in postseason college football, the Bowl also conducts competitions at the prep and intercollegiate levels . Sports included in the Bowl’s repertoire include basketball, bowling, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball; the bowl also serves as the title sponsor for the championship events of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association . All of these events introduce New Orleans’ unique flavor of hospitality to competitors and fans from around the world . In a typical year, the Allstate Sugar Bowl gives opportunities and recognition to nearly 100,000 student-athletes from elementary school levels through collegiate competition . In addition to its many events, the Bowl is also heavily involved with several other local organizations . The Allstate Sugar Bowl sponsors the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame; The Manning Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding college football quarterback; the Eddie Robinson Award, presented to the top college football coach at the FBS level; and the local chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame . All of these activities hail back to the original goal of the organization of promoting tourism and economic growth in the region . Over the last decade, the Bowl has generated over $2 .5 billion of economic impact for New Orleans and Louisiana .

2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship 6 English Turn Golf & Country Club The Realm of the Extraordinary In a city internationally known for its magnificent private clubs, English Turn Golf & Country Club stands out as an unmatched example of luxurious environment and superb recreational facilities . This Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, Par 72 Championship Golf Course presents a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels . Every hole has an individual personality including numerous bunkers, large waste bunkers, plentiful grass depressions and mounds which line the sculpted fairways . The property was designed with meandering lakes surrounding the golf course giving a separation from the community and a magnificent Plantation Style Clubhouse making your visit at English Turn an unparalleled experience . The Signature Course at English Turn was originally designed in 1988 for the New Orleans PGA Tour event, which was held at the facility until 2004 and in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina . The inaugural event was the USF&G Classic in 1989 . The course proved to be a challenge for the PGA Tour with notoriously undulating greens, water in play on 17 of the 18 holes and its signature 15th Island Green . In addition, the 18th hole was ranked as the hardest hole on tour many times during the tournament’s tenure . Past winners of the New Orleans PGA Tour event include Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Byron Nelson, Davis Love III, David Toms and Vijay Singh . English Turn’s spectacular 43,000-square-foot clubhouse recalls the grace and grandeur of Louisiana’s legendary plantation homes . Surrounded by romantic verandas and an expanse of green lawns and flowering gardens, the clubhouse offers members and their guests the very finest amenities and ambience . Exceptional course design specifically created to address the unique drainage issues that have become associated with golf in New Orleans is backed up by meticulous care and an incredibly knowledgeable and attentive staff . A round of golf at English Turn is truly an extraordinary experience .

A Piece of New Orleans Golf History During the spring of 1699, war raged between England and France . The exploration and colonization of the Mississippi River were prime concerns for both countries . France had established a small colony along the Mississippi near New Orleans . England, anxious to control the river, dispatched a warship to invade the French Settlement . Iberville and Bienville, the French colonists, realizing the impact of the invasion by the English dispatched a small convoy to the British warship anchored below New Orleans . Bienville, approaching the English captain, warned him to depart immediately or face a large-scale military battle . The English turned the warship around and returned to England . Bienville had bluffed the English captain -- the French “armada” consisted of only two small canoes with five brave Frenchmen! To this day, the grand bend in the Mississippi downriver from Old New Orleans is called “English Turn .”
