Devoted dog owners Rod Burkett and his wife, Amy, have risen to the challenge. They are no strangers to traveling with a fearful Fido. In fact, they travel with their two fearful dogs, Ty and Buster, on an almost full-time basis. How do they manage? For starters, they recognize that their dogs have individual fears, and they work to avoid or alleviate those fears. This task, Burkett says, is easier if your dog has specific fears that are readily anticipated and easily managed. Debbie Jacobs, author of A Guide to Living With & Training a Fearful Dog, agrees. “So much will depend on the dog and what they are afraid of. A dog with very specific triggers may be easier to travel with if those triggers can be avoided or managed than a dog who suffers from general anxi- ety or phobias.” Both Burkett and Jacobs agree that one of the keys to traveling with a fearful dog is to avoid C atch Some Zzz’s pushing the dog too far, too fast. With full bellies we re-armored ourselves in a fortress of wool and GORE-TEX® and stumbled outside to find a surprise. Snow! Cycling in snow was a novelty to all of us, and we pushed on in high spirits while Paco dashed alongside the bike. As darkness descended, we rolled into the small town of Lihula in search of shelter. It soon became clear that our almost Soviet-era map was well out of date, and the town hotel had been closed for over two years. Luckily, the sight of two cyclists and two dogs laced with snow was pitiful enough and phone calls were made. For the next four days, the snow fell thick and our home-sweet-home was a field worker’s building on the outskirts of Matsalu National Park, a land of floodplains, meadows and coastal islets on the west coast of Estonia. The park is a refuge for many animals including moose and is an important stopover for migratory birds on their way to and from the Arctic. We also found it to be a wonderful break, enjoying the hospitality of biologists and rangers and a bright Estonian girl with a love for dogs. But when the snow began to melt, it was time to make the final leg of our adventure to Riga along a highway that we had been warned to steer well clear of. It started off quite comfortably,

However, before we had a chance to re- route, we watched a semi-trailer pull into a rest stop ahead of us. A timid stray dog approached, and we watched as the truck driver fed him scraps of his lunch. Hmmm… he has a soft spot for dogs, we thought. Must be a nice guy. It seemed like the world was conspiring to give us an unexpected third option into Riga. I nervously approached the truck driver and after explaining our situation with finely tuned miming skills, we were waved aboard. Two hours later we arrived in Riga safe and sound. We couldn’t have planned a more perfect ending to our 10,000-mile bicycle odyssey, a life affirming ride filled with serendipity, adventure and the kindness of strangers. And who better to share it with than our beloved furry ?
