    Unsafe Marathon Man (1976), Directed by John Schlesinger By Fearless Young Orphan Babe (Dustin Hoffman) is a New York graduate student in a prestigious history program writing a doctoral thesis that he hopes will exonerate his blacklisted father, now dead. He believes that his older brother Doc (Roy Scheider) is in the oil business. Babe is rigorously training for the New York Marathon as well, which will give him an advantage when it counts, later in the film. Meanwhile, it seems that Doc has not been perfectly honest with Babe: he is not an oil businessman but an agent for a shady organization that operates in the cracks between the FBI and the CIA (the vaguely named “Division”). Doc’s latest assignment has been the handling of a diamond exchange between Nazi war criminal Szell (Laurence Olivier) currently hiding in Uruguay, and Szell’s elderly brother. These are diamonds that were stolen from Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust, when they had been falsely promised freedom in exchange. We’ll learn later that Szell has been selling out his former Nazi collaborators, which is apparently why the U.S. has been willing to deal with the sonofabitch at all. We can suppose that business would have proceeded as usual if not for the fact that Szell’s brother is killed in a car accident at the beginning of the film. Because of this, Szell himself must make the trip to New York to get the diamonds. Szell, a man who has made a life out of betraying other humans, does not trust anyone, including Doc (or Scylla, which is Doc’s spy-name).

The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys­ teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener­ ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film­ script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de­ scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia­ logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab­ lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. Goda This dissertation investigates Nazi Germany’s diplomacy and intelligence- gathering in Argentina from 1933-1945. It does so from three perspectives. This study first explores the rivalries that characterized the bureaucracy in the Third Reich. It argues that those rivalries negatively affected Germany’s diplomatic position in Argentina. The actions of the AO in Argentina in the 1930s were indicative of this trend. This created a fear of fifth-column activity among Latin American governments with large German populations. Second, this study explores the rivalry between the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD) of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (Reich Security Main Office, RSHA) and Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Ministry, AA). It argues that the rivalry between these two organizations in Argentina was part of a larger plan on the part of Amt VI, SS Foreign Intelligence to usurp the functions of the AA.
