Cairns, FASLA Ball State University Muncie, Indiana May 15, 2018 Assessing the Effect of the Proposed Obama Presidential Center on the Historic Landscape of Jackson Park Prepared by: Malcolm Cairns, FASLA; Historic Landscape Consultant For: The Barack Obama Foundation Date: May 15, 2018 Statement of purpose and charge: To develop the historic landscape analysis that places the proposal to locate the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park in its proper historic context. This investigation was undertaken at the request of Richard F. Friedman of the law firm of Neal & Leroy, LLC, on behalf of the Barack Obama Foundation. The assignment was to investigate the proposed Obama Presidential Center master plan and to assess the effect of the project on the historic cultural landscape of Jackson Park, Chicago, a park listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This investigation has necessitated a thorough review of the cultural landscape history of Jackson Park, the original South Park, of which Jackson Park was an integral part, and of the history of the Chicago Park and Boulevard system. Critical in this landscape research were previous studies which resulted in statements of historic landscape significance and historic integrity, studies which listed historic landscape character-defining elements, and other documentation which provided both large and small scale listings of historic landscape form, structure, detail, and design intent which contribute to the historic character of the Park. -

Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

Marathon Man (1976), Directed by John Schlesinger
Unsafe Marathon Man (1976), Directed by John Schlesinger By Fearless Young Orphan Babe (Dustin Hoffman) is a New York graduate student in a prestigious history program writing a doctoral thesis that he hopes will exonerate his blacklisted father, now dead. He believes that his older brother Doc (Roy Scheider) is in the oil business. Babe is rigorously training for the New York Marathon as well, which will give him an advantage when it counts, later in the film. Meanwhile, it seems that Doc has not been perfectly honest with Babe: he is not an oil businessman but an agent for a shady organization that operates in the cracks between the FBI and the CIA (the vaguely named “Division”). Doc’s latest assignment has been the handling of a diamond exchange between Nazi war criminal Szell (Laurence Olivier) currently hiding in Uruguay, and Szell’s elderly brother. These are diamonds that were stolen from Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust, when they had been falsely promised freedom in exchange. We’ll learn later that Szell has been selling out his former Nazi collaborators, which is apparently why the U.S. has been willing to deal with the sonofabitch at all. We can suppose that business would have proceeded as usual if not for the fact that Szell’s brother is killed in a car accident at the beginning of the film. Because of this, Szell himself must make the trip to New York to get the diamonds. Szell, a man who has made a life out of betraying other humans, does not trust anyone, including Doc (or Scylla, which is Doc’s spy-name). -

The species was first collected in New York in 1938, but the sole specimen was misidentified as Gamochaeta purpurea . Gamochaeta pensylvanica is reported here with specimens from Bronx, Kings, and Queens counties and observations from Nassau County. A key based on living and preserved specimens distinguishing G. purpurea from G. pensylvanica is provided. Of the 12 species of Gamochaeta recognized in North America (Nesom, 2006), only G. purpurea (L.) Cabrera has previously been reported for New York state (Nesom 2006; Weldy et al. 2015), where it has been considered rare (S3) (Weldy et al. -
