Club Championships and Summer Series 2011 The Committee has confirmed the dates and venues for these two competitions - details on p12. The first Club Championship Race is Cross Country round the fields at Bowley on 12th April. With this year‘s format, you need run all 3 races if you wish to feature in the Overall Club Championship.

Tick Bite Campaign In one of last year‘s Newsletters, there was an article about the potential dangers of tick bites and Lyme Disease. There is a similar piece in the spring Fellrunner magazine. Now, Peter Browning has sent me information that 11th- 17th April 2011 is Tick Bite Prevention Week. (There‘s a week for absolutely everything, these days—so why not tick bites?) It seems that the incidence of tick bites is on the rise and everyone who ventures into the Great Outdoors is potentially at risk. If you want more information about Tick Bite Prevention Week, inevitably there is a website: http://www.tickbitepreventionweek.org/

News in Brief...... Congratulations to Natalya Irvine, who was first girl home in the Burnley Primary Schools‘ Cross Country Championship Race at Towneley Park on Tuesday, 15th March, leading her school team, St John‘s Cliviger, which contained other Clayton junior members, to the team prize (she thinks!). Some of our Junior boys posted good results, too. Well done to all! There were good performances by senior Clayton ladies and men at the first FRA English Championship Race at Long Mynd on 6th March (see p23-25 for reports). Entries are open for many of the remaining English and British Championship Races; details on p30. Harry Manning has informed me of the following prize-winners n the Mid Lancs XC League: Individual V50 Bronze—Mark Wightman; V60 Gold—Pete Booth: V40 Team—Bronze; V50 Team—Gold; V60 Team—Gold. Well done to all!

Reminder

The Calderdale Way Relay, postponed from December 2010, will take place on Sunday, 8th May.

Please try to keep that date free. Captains will be contacting runners and finalising teams in the next few weeks, while there is still enough time to recce.

However, the majority of the ascent comes in the last 4 Monday 4th April 2011 at the Whitakers Arms, Accrington. 7.00pm miles in the form of three monster climbs.

Almost 500 runners congregated in the picturesque Carding Mill Valley, before speeding up the first 400m of tarmac and onto the steep hillside. After a fast start (not my normal style), I ran strongly in the middle part of the race across the moor and down the slippery valleys. Despite the early effort, I was feeling OK as the first of the final climbs loomed. I climbed more strongly than most men around me, mainly because I was trying to stay with some of the leading females: Jackie Lee, Ali Raw, Judith Jepson, Hazel Robinson and a couple of local runners. Chauvinism is a wonderful motivator. We were together up Callow and I just managed to keep running along the uphill traverse that preceded the steep plunge into Ashes Hollow, prior to the last, and longest, monster climb up Yearlet. Chasing the ladies off the final descent, I went over on my left ankle (sprained 2 months ago) and, after an expletive had left my lips, offered a silent prayer for my trusty ankle support. A strong finishing burst up the last small ascent, got me just ahead of Hazel, Judith and Ali to take me to 132nd place, in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes; 6 minutes faster than 10 years ago and only 90 seconds behind the V60 category winner (& gold medallist for the last 2 years), Ben Grant– the nearest I have been to him in any race. Overall Club Championship Long Mynd Valleys Gold Trophy Silver Trophy Bronze Trophy Long Mynd Valleys was the first race in this year‘s English Champs. I hadn‘t done it since 1994, but I hadn‘t forgotten the steep climbs in the second 2010 Men’s Club half. I had revisited Church Stretton for the Fell Relays in 2003 and really Championship enjoyed doing the navigation leg. Even the Stretton Skyline race two years 1st Senior 1st V40 2nd Senior 2nd V40 3rd Senior 3rd V40 ago – I was ill, injured and the weather was abysmal (ask Pete Booth!) – hadn‘t Ian Greenwood David Horrocks Neil Worswick put me off the area, so I was looking forward to the day. The roads were empty on Sunday morning and the journey took less than 1st V50 1st V60 2nd V50 3rd V50 two hours. Although it was cold it looked as though it would be clear as we set Ron Chappell Mark Wightman Doug Munroe off up Carding Mill Valley. After a steep start out of the valley, the route drops st to Checkpoint 1 and then gradually climbs to the top of the Mynd. On the long, 1 V70 flat run round the top of the valleys, the race field was strung out ahead. Next Ted Orrell it was down into another valley to Checkpoint 2, followed by a steep up and down to Checkpoint 3; then over another ridge to Checkpoint 4 – about half 2010 Ladies’ Club way in time. I thought I could Karin Goss remember the route off from last time, but I was surprised that no-one was in Fell Championship sight down the broad shoulder. As I reached the track at the bottom, I realised why. The runners in front of me had all taken the steep direct route, and were 2010 Men’s Fell appearing from my left. I thought I had caught them, but unfortunately I had a Champion short sharp pull to get to them.
