  • Five Trinidad Scenes
trinidadfive scenes Rich in nature and culture—and not heavily commercialized—this island is one of the best spots in the Caribbean STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY Susan Kraus 58 LM w i16 t’s often overlooked among other Caribbean destinations. After all, Trinidad—the larger of the two islands that constitute the nation ITrinidad and Tobago—is the most southern of all Caribbean islands and only 7 miles from Venezuela. Its climate is as much South American as Caribbean. But what makes Trinidad an outlier among Caribbean islands also makes it a delightful place to visit. Trinidad is a rare vacation destination that is not tourist-driven. It is rich in diversity, more a melting-pot than even the U.S., and it has an abundance of natural attractions. Oddly, flights to this island often cost less than flights to islands much closer to the United States. Trinidad is an intriguing location for those seeking a beach … but something more as well. Here are some of my favorite scenes from a recent trip to Trinidad. SCENE ONE: THE PANYARD (WITH A SIDE OF DOUBLES) I’m walking along a side street in downtown Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad. Storefronts and cement walls line narrow sidewalks, so it is hard to see what is ahead. But I’m drawn toward the music that echoes across the pavement. The sounds are the compelling beat of a steel pan band gathering in the outdoor rehearsal and performance space known as a panyard. Usually a cemented-over vacant lot and often partially covered by a high tin open-air roof, panyards are scattered across Trinidad and gather in the hundred-plus street bands and orchestras.

  • Seaworld in San Diego, California
Seaworld in San Diego, California Watch Dolphins play at the SeaWorld in San Diego, CA With roller coasters, water rides, and animal exhibits, SeaWorld is a popular destination for families to spend the day in San Diego, California. Various attractions at SeaWorld makes it one of the top visited destinations in the world. The Bayside Skyride, a six-minute gondola ride takes you over part of Mission Bay on two 80-foot (24m) towers, and lands on the other side. The distance between these two towers is the longest out of any VonRoll Skyride ever built. The SeaWorld Sky Tower was built in 1969. The ride rises at a speed of 150 feet per minute (46 m/min) while gyrating slowly (1.02 rpm) on the 320-foot tower to offer panoramic views of San Diego and the bay near the park. The Journey to Atlantis attraction is a flume ride and roller coaster themed ride reminiscing the lost city of Atlantis. This ride makes you experience butterflies in your stomach. The ride exits in a large marine museum that houses Leopard sharks, Spotted eagle rays, Cownose rays and Southern stingrays. The park’s raft ride, called Shipwreck Rapids, takes riders through the wild turtle exhibit and right through a waterfall, while Manta is SeaWorld’s biggest thrill ride. Sesame Street's Bay of Play area is based upon the children's television series 'Sesame Street.' There are three interesting rides in this area: Abby's Seastar Spin, Elmo's Flying Fish and Oscar's Rockin' Eel. At the Turtle Reef you can see over 60 turtles along with fishes in an oceanarium.

  • CHARCUT and Charbar Competed in 2015'S Celebrity Hors D'oeuvres, Winning the Picture Perfect Award. We Interviewed Their
CHARCUT and charbar competed in 2015’s Celebrity Hors d’Oeuvres, winning the Picture Perfect Award. We interviewed their Executive Chefs to find out a little more about their restaurants and their passion for food. Meet Executive Chefs Mike Batke and John Jackson. Congratulations on receiving the Picture Perfect award at Celebrity Hors d’Oeuvres in April! What was your inspiration for your winning appetizer? MIKE: Cookies and milk! It’s very nostalgic, not just for us, but for everyone. Everyone remembers having a plate full of warm chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven, and tall glass of cold milk to dip them in. You know the cookies are so warm they melt in your hands and the milk is so cold that it has the condensation beads of water dripping down the side. So, we decided to roll that memory up in a one-bite truffle. Did you and your celebrity team discuss tactics before the event, or did you improvise on the spot? JOHN: Yes, we discussed it with the entire team. It was a group effort and we were extremely happy with the results. We couldn’t stop eating them. What is the philosophy of CHAR|CUT? CHARCUT's style of food is best described as local chef-driven cuisine, with Italian and Country French accents. In creating menus, our goal is to continue to evolve simple ingredients. Ingredients are sourced from small, local artisan farmers and ranchers, with herbs harvested daily from our own garden. We like to know the first names of the people whose products we serve.
