That was the goal of the Tennent family when they first became maltmen and brewers in Glasgow in 1556. In 1776 John and Robert Tennent expanded the family business into Drygate premises and quality remained their ideal when in 1793 they took over Wellpark Brewery which had supplied the ales that refreshed "each and every one" of Prince Charles Edward’s army camped on Glasgow Green in 1745. It was quality that made Tennent’s Lager, first introduced in 1885, into a world-beater, gaining it export markets in almost 100 countries. The Empire Exhibition of 1938 launched the first draught lager, and over recent years Tennent’s range has expanded steadily. But never at the expense of quality. That’s Tennents watchword, and has been for more than 400 years. Tha am Mod a sior fhas. Nuair a bha e an seo an 1897 agus 1903 cha do mhair e ach aon latha air gach turus. Thill e an 1912, ghabh 1169 pairt agus ruith e airson tri laithean, a’ chiad latha airson na cloinne. An 1923 agus 1928 bha feum air ceithir laithean. Ann an 1936, 1949,1957,1966 agus 1972 an uair bha e an seo a rithist bha Diar-daoin is Di-h-aoine de dh’aon sheachdain airson na cloinne agus Di-ciadain, Diar-daoin agus Di-h-aoine den ath sheachdain airson nan inbhich. O chionn ceithir bliadhna, mas math mo chuimhne, thainig Comataidh a’ Mhoid gun cho-dhunadh gum bitheadh e freagarrach a’ chlann sna h-inbhich a chuir san aon sheachdain, a’ toirt cothrom do na h-aoisean co-mheasgachadh, agus am Mod a thoiseachadh air an Di-sathairne roimhe sin le fuaim is faram is ard spiorad nam piobairean, nam fidhlearan agus luchd innil-ciuil eile. Tha an structur seo ag obrachadh air leth math. Am bliadhna bithidh corr is 3000 farpaiseach a’gabhail pairt sa Mhod a’ toirt moran tlachd is toil-inntinn do mhuinntir a’ bhaile agus do luchd leantail a’ Mhoid. Ach tha meudachd a’ Mhoid na chuis iomagain dhuinn a thaobh cosgais. Tha e na uallach mor air coimhearsnachd sam bith corr is £30,000 a chruinneachadh, gu sonraichte ann an tim gainne airgid san duthaich. Ach se sin an cnap mor a tha dhith airson tuarasdail, cosgais oifis, cleireachd is siubhail agus gach cosgais eile co-cheangailte ris a’ Mhod. De am fuasgladh airson an duilgheadas? Thug an Local Authorities (National Mod) Bill a chaidh troimh Thigh nan Cumantan an 1969 cead do na h-ughdarrasan ionadail cuideachadh airgid a thoirt seachad.

At the opening of Session 2017-18 the school roll was 221 with 20 children in the Pr-5 Unit, 59 in the Primary and 143 in the Secondary Departments. The Secondary serves north Mull and each year around half of our S1 pupils transfer from Tobermory Primary while the remainder make the transition from our associate primaries. This session we also have 7 pupils attending on placing requests from Lochaline (Highland Council). The school invests considerable time in maintaining and developing links with its partner primary schools engaging in many joint events including residential trips and themed days which support Health and Wellbeing and Wider Achievement. Further to this, the Mull cluster come together to take part in CPD and share practice through the Mull Literacy Group moderation meetings. In the Primary and Secondary departments, in addition to the SLT, there is a staffing allocation of 20fte supported by an Additional Support Needs team providing staffing at a level of 5.46fte; some of the ASN team are assigned to Priority 1 pupils and others provide support to the full range of students.

  • A Vision for Scotland
A Vision for Scotland The Report and Final Recommendations of the Literacy Commission December 2009 1 Preface It was a privilege to be asked to Chair the Literacy Commission and, along with my colleagues, to produce a report and series of recommendations that we believe can help to address the low levels of avoidable illiteracy that still exist in Scotland today. From the outset, the Commission has operated on an independent and impartial basis using its own, limited resources. The findings that we have produced are not intended to support the aims and objectives of any individual political party or organisation and, it is with this in mind, that we offer our report to Scottish society as a whole. Literacy is a massive topic that covers not just the traditional skills of reading and writing but other literacy skill sets, such as emotional and financial literacy. Poor literacy affects not just school children; it also affects adults and those with learning difficulties. The Commission considered these different aspects and decided from the outset to focus its work on those children who have the capacity to learn and develop their literacy skills but who are currently failing to do so. For the past 18 months, the Commission has reviewed evidence from a variety of individuals and organisations with first hand experience of dealing with the problem of poor literacy, and considered very closely the factors that can contribute to this. Our report sets out eleven clear recommendations that we believe can address the problem of poor basic literacy and, if adopted by Scottish society, will place us in the enviable position of being the developed world’s first fully literate nation.
