  • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).

  • Arranger Braves the Challenge That Is Ornette Coleman
Arranger braves the challenge that is Ornette Coleman www.sfgate.com Return to regular view Arranger braves the challenge that is Ornette Coleman - Jesse Hamlin, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, March 31, 2004 Gil Goldstein was bobbing slowly on the piano bench, a slightly pained expression on his face as he listened to the SFJazz Collective play Ornette Coleman's mournfully singing "Lonely Woman.'' "That felt good,'' said Goldstein, the gifted arranger who orchestrated the classic Coleman tunes and some of the original numbers the octet will perform at its debut concerts in San Francisco this week. Goldstein sought the essential feeling and flavor of each piece, framing the material with a knowing simplicity that lets the music speak for itself. It was particularly challenging to orchestrate Coleman's radically unconventional and intuitive music, with its freedom from predetermined harmonic and metric structures and its focus on group improvisation. "You can't write what Ornette played, you have to feel it,'' said Goldstein, 53, a calm, slyly amusing man with thick white hair, green eyes and rosy skin. He was lunching on shrimp and egg rolls the other day at Eliza's on California Street, down the block from the new Jewish Community Center, where the SFJazz Collective has been rehearsing intensely. "And there are not many people alive who can play his music the way he played it, with such rhythmic abandon. These musicians can do it. What I tried to do is make the arrangements flexible enough to fit into those floating time zones. Ornette's music is also very speech-like, and, like speech, doesn't have a strict time flow.

Designed and built in-house by our staff of engineers, this robotic “Drum Machine,” called the Gluing Gantry, ensures that every Evans head has a true collar. A series of vacuum fixtures holds the film in place for each head while the robotic gluing arm circles above the hoop and dispenses epoxy. The result is a drumhead that tunes both easily and consistently. At Evans, we do it right the first time. And every time. Check out what Peter Erskine has to say about Evans drumheads at www.evansdrumheads.com PO Box 290 • Farmingdale, NY 11735 We’ve been making the world’s finest sticks for years. And experience tells us that there are no shortcuts when it comes to making a stick. There is, however a very good short- cut when choosing one. The journey from wooden dowel to finished drumstick is a tough one. Each stick makes its way through the hands of several craftsmen before it leaves us. And at every test, there’s always the chance of getting turned into firewood. But it does get easier when our sticks reach the store. • TOTO Bio (PDF)
TOTO Bio Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members’ imprint can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with 225 Grammy nominations. Band members were South Park characters, while Family Guy did an entire episode on the band's hit "Africa." As a band, TOTO sold 35 million albums, and today continue to be a worldwide arena draw staging standing room only events across the globe. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles, and 35 years in to a career enjoy a multi-generational fan base. It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world's population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO. The list of those they individually collaborated with reads like a who's who of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, alongside the biggest names in music. The band took a page from their heroes The Beatles playbook and created a collective that features multiple singers, songwriters, producers, and multi-instrumentalists. Guitarist Steve Lukather aka Luke has performed on 2000 albums, with artists across the musical spectrum that include Michael Jackson, Roger Waters, Miles Davis, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Don Henley, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick and many more. His solo career encompasses a catalog of ten albums and multiple DVDs that collectively encompass sales exceeding 500,000 copies.

  • The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River
The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River Okee dokee folks… I went to Twin River in Lincoln the other night to check out the band Toto. There was a nearly full house in attendance and from the looks of the array of Toto t-shirts I saw folks wearing, a lot of big fans. I cannot be counted as a big fan. I am a casual listener, but I do enjoy a few of their songs. The lights went down right at 8pm and the backing band members took the stage and rocked a bit before the actual members of Toto — Steve Lukathar, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams — arrived on stage. They launched into the song, “Only The Children.” Surprisingly, the second song was their debut hit “Hold The Line.” That brought the audience to their feet and they sang along encouraged by lead singer, Joseph Williams. They played three more songs, “Afraid of Love,” “Lovers in the Night” and “Pamela” before I recognized the “lite rock” favorite “I’ll Be Over You.” Williams encouraged fans to light up their phones and wave them in the air. The next song, “Chinatown,” was introduced as originally being written for the Toto I album, but over the years it was re-written and rearranged for the Toto XIV album. They talked about a recently discovered video that they came across of the band performing in Montreux and it inspired them to perform their version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House.” This featured a fiery guitar solo by Steve Lukathar. They introduced the band at this point, Lenny Castro (percussion), Warren Ham (saxophone), Shannon Forres (drums) and Shem von Schroeck (bass).

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.
