  • Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context.

The goal of this investigation is to determine the origin and surface composition of the asteroid (121514) 1999 UJ7, the only currently known L4 Martian Trojan asteroid. Methods. We have obtained visible reflectance spectra and photometry of 1999 UJ7 and compared the spectroscopic results with the spectra of a number of taxonomic classes and subclasses. A light curve was obtained and analysed to determine the asteroid spin state. Results. The visible spectrum of 1999 UJ7 exhibits a negative slope in the blue region and the presence of a wide and deep absorption feature centred around ∼0.65 µm. The overall morphology of the spectrum seems to suggest a C-complex taxonomy. The photometric behaviour is fairly complex. The light curve shows a primary period of 1.936 d, but this is derived using only a subset of the photometric data.

Work done while supported by an appointment to the NASA Postdoctoral Program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through a contract with NASA. ^Currently at Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, Tucson AZ Abstract Asteroids belonging to the Ch spectral taxonomic class are defined by the presence of an absorption near 0.7 μm, which is interpreted as due to Fe-bearing phyllosilicates. Phyllosilicates also cause strong absorptions in the 3-μm region, as do other hydrated and hydroxylated minerals and H2O ice. Over the past decade, spectral observations have revealed different 3-µm band shapes the asteroid population. Although a formal taxonomy is yet to be fully established, the “Pallas-type” spectral group is most consistent with the presence of phyllosilicates. If Ch class and Pallas type are both indicative of phyllosilicates, then all Ch-class asteroids should also be Pallas-type. In order to test this hypothesis, we obtained 42 observations of 36 Ch-class asteroids in the 2- to 4-µm spectral region.

  • A Method for Determining the V Magnitude of Asteroids from CCD Images
A method for determining the V magnitude of asteroids from CCD images Roger Dymock & Richard Miles A contribution of the Asteroids & Remote Planets Section (Director: Richard Miles) We describe a method of determining the V magnitude of an asteroid using differential photometry, with the magnitudes of comparison stars derived from Carlsberg Meridian Catalogue 14 (CMC14) data. The availability of a large number of suitable CMC14 stars enables a reasonably accurate magnitude (±0.05 mag) to be found without having to resort to more complicated absolute or all-sky photometry. An improvement in accu- racy to ±0.03 mag is possible if an ensemble of several CMC14 stars is used. This method is expected to be less accurate for stars located within ±10° of the galactic equator owing to excessive interstellar reddening and stellar crowding. (Received: 13 March) CCD photometry of asteroid 22 Kalliope taken at Tubitak National Observatory during November 2006 is reported. A rotational period of 4.149 ± 0.0003 hours and amplitude of 0.386 mag at Johnson B filter, 0.342 mag at Johnson V are determined. The observation of 22 Kalliope was made at Tubitak National Observatory located at an elevation of 2500m. For this study, the 410mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope was used with a SBIG ST-8E CCD electronic imager. Data were collected on 2006 November 27. 305 images were obtained for each Johnson B and V filters. Exposure times were chosen as 30s for filter B and 15s for filter V. All images were calibrated using dark and bias frames Figure 1. Lightcurve of 22 Kalliope for Johnson B filter. X axis is and sky flats. JD-2454067.00. Ordinate is relative magnitude. During this observation, Kalliope was 99.26% illuminated and the phase angle was 9º.87 (Guide 8.0). Times of observation were light-time corrected.
