* T &LOCK :tH(, A (If A VICTORIAN MARATHON CLUB and ROAD RUNNEBS 37th AMUAL REPORT 1982 - 1983. The past year saw us hold very much the same number of participants in our races in spite of still growing expansion of numbers in Pun Runs and increasing commercialism through a number of means, both in the Amateur and Professional fields* Cash and Trust Fund inducement for marketable sponsorship and promotion have taken over as prime con siderations, more and bigger at the expense of the comfort and enjoyment of the runners is the order of the day* It seems that those who seek manageability, a friendly and co-operative atmosphere with a feeling of caring for your fellow-runners and a quiet sense of achievement, whatever their personal reasons, are voting with their feet for the less pressurised runs where it is still people who count not numbers* This also is a growing trend, a back-lash as it were against the feeling of having your sport used, for sane ulterior purposes, even to the extent of promoting something from which you would prefer to distance yourself o There is a strong feeling among our VMC HR participants that oursis very much a club of runners, for runners and managed by runners* We have had it voiced on many occasions in this past period that we need to be somewhat more positive in our approach to make many more runners aware of our presence and other similar runner-orientated bodies* Attempts to have a Fun Run Co-ordinator carrying out a function in this direction have fizzled out basically because of the inability to compete within the commercial rat-race* We have managed to carry on very effectively with our program while the amalgamation of the men and women association into the V.A.A. is going through its teething troubles. We actually conducted the V .A .A . Marathon Championship in conjunction with our own VMC RR Marathon and received their praise and thanks for a job well done and we put in the effort organisationally to make the combined meeting with our Qnil Zatopek 10,000m series once again a crowd pleaser as well as a series of great perfonnances. Financially, as previously, we are paying our own way on present membership subsriptions and providing the services needed in spite of rising costs. Your Committee has worked well but there is still the problem of members putting in just that one day at helping to make sure that we have enough officials to make our events function smoothly* Eveiy one of the race day jobs is important although it may not appear to be so* One Road Marshal short can mean a turn missed, a lack of scorers can mean too far or too short for one runner with consequent waste of effort and wrong score, a lack of Finish ifa-rfthftla can mean a hopeless muddle of places and times, etc* Arising from our experiences in the past years, accentuated by some of the events during the period under review, we shall have to make several decisions at our Annual General Meeting with the aim of tidying up some of our shortcomings and adopting proposals to improve our day to day management of the Club by greater efficiency and better use of our personal involvement with our sport* Members do not have to be on the Committee or Executive of an organisation to be able to contribute their ability and expertise in one or another aspect of club management* It is solely a question of being prepared to con tribute toward the satisfactory conduct of your own sport in some capacity regularly* Fred Lester , General Secretary. ********************************************* CONTESTS 2 oCommunications, Venues 13*Sore Feet, Good Tan - Fiji Marathon 2A*llotive of AGM / MARATHON Entry Form 14.Sore Feet cont ./Running Round cont*/ 3.37th Annual Report 15«Bunning Round The World (Ultra Stats 4 .Reports of interest to members l6oRed Devil (South Melb) Marathon 5.VMC 8km it 2km / Osaka Ladies Marathon 17 .VMC 10km F.R. AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING it was noted that attendances at our rune were holding steady, but that organisation at these runs as well in general needed improvement if we were to keep pace with demands. Fixtures for the year 1983 were approved. We had endeavoured to dovetail with VAA events as much as possible, but liaison with the VAA winter committee has been rather less than satisfactory in this regard. The collapse of the Fun Run Secretariat, due to insufficient funding, either Govemement or private, was noted with regret. AT THE FEIBRUAHY MEBnNG figures showed a very similar picture to the previous year, both in memberships and attendances. One of the pleasing featureswas the inclusion of three men and tiro women 1110 BR mkmspbs in the Australian CC team to the World Championships. They are: Rob and Nick deCastella, Max Little, Megan Sloane and Carolyn Schuwalow. Our congratulations on their fine performances, selection and also our best wishes for their success overseas are extended to them. It was also resolved to improve signs and marki ngs at our runs and that we bring our membership year in line with the Calendar year, a matter to be ratified by the A.G.M. Preparations for the major winter runs are in hand. The matter of better continuity and a more positive membership policy also received attention, possibly coupled with an extension of our program of events, weekend camps and similar ventures. Our finacial position was deemed to be adequate and, in spite of the 12$ plus inflation, we would retain our various fees at the same level.

VICTORIAN MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP information from the VAA (Newsletter No.4): Ehtry forms are now available for this Championship which will be held on Sunday,March 27o The first four Victorians, male and female, to finish will be automatically selected in the Victorian team to compete in the Australian Marathon Championship in Sydney in June. In deciding the other members of the team, the selectors will take into account perfor mances by athletes who wish to be considered for inclusion but did not, for reasons acceptable to the selectors, contest the trial event. In these cases, the reasons must be provided to the selectors in writing.

ATHLETE ADVERTISING,SPONSORSHIP AND PARTICIPATION MONET: The Australian Athletic Union advisee that an appropriate fee may now be negotiated by them on behalf of an athlete for advertising, sponsorship or participation in athletic competition* UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY AN ATHLETE NEGOTIATE SUCH FINACIAL BENEFITS INDEPENDENTLY OR THROUGH AN AGENT WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE BOARD OF THE UNION. THIS APPROVAL WILL ONLY BE GIVEN IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCU1EIANCES. Please note- Athletics is not an open sport. Amateur athletes CANNOT compete in the same event or MEETING as professional athletes. Athletes cannot accept prizemoney in the manner professional athletes accept prizemoney. Any benefits derived from an athlete's participation must be paid in the first instance to the Union or a State Association if suchaction is approved by the Union0 These two last items have been reproduced in the same manner as printed in the V.A.Ao Newsletter No.4» including their emphasis. (Ed.)(Seems I have trouble with finaNciali) XXX XXX XXX PTiRASE NOTE: We were unable to receive permission from the Shire of Flinders for our Sorrento runs at Easter, although no objections were raised by the local Police. Hence, the EASTER RUNS will be held over the Latrobe Uni circuitwhich will shorten the Father & Son and the Mother 4 Daughter runs to app. 6.4km ( 4 Miles), but will make the Open Fun Run and VMC RR Championship very close to actual 16km or 10 Miles. It seems that everyone is trying to cane in on the act, including the assorted bureau cracies at various levels and are making what is basically a straightforward project of outdoor recreation into an involved battle of the departmental paper war 11 VMC ROAD RUNNERS 8km . RUNNING IN CAIRNS. Tom Goringe. You thought your only problem with the animal kingdom was that snapping canine hiding behind the fence waiting for your unprotected legs to flash paBt. Well, spare a thought for your fellow runners in Cairns, North Queensland - not only do they also have to contend with "man's best friend" but also with that left-over from the age of dinosaurs, the salt water crocodile, a bird that stands up to 2 metres tall and can outrun Alan Wells, the Cassowary, and something that has no worries about leg injuries only gravel rash on the stomach, the Taipan. And, if that's not enough, it also gets a little hot and buaid during summer0 But don't rush off and add Cairns to the list of places never to visit, add it to the list of places to visit during cold, wet Melbourne winters. The Cairns Road Runners Club have a full calendar during the cooler months, froiji 3*000m track races to the Cairns City Marathon, plus a number of fun runs in the area. Visitors are always welcome at the club training runs on which they will probably be shown some Cairns scenery, especially if they intimate a liking for hills. The Cairns City Marathon date is MAY 22. Contact: Cairns Road Runners Club, P.O.Box 5046, Cairns Mail Centre, 4870 or John COVACEVICH, Tel 556 173. VOL. 14 No. 4 THE 4th ANNUAL ALBANT MABA’THON. W .A .. 7-11-1982. Dot Browne. The trip started with a call from John Maddlson, W.A.Veteraas A.C. and leading organiser of the Perth People’ s Marathon 1982. He invitedme to be a guest at their Albany event on Sunday, November 7th. They wanted a woman runner to draw out their last year’ s winner, Debbie NIEDZW1ECKI (PB of 3*04), to do a sub 3 hour, as apparently they've never had a female break the 3 hour barrier in the West. I hesitated as it would be only 3 weeks after the Big U, too close for comfort .However, being an optimist from way back, and lured by the prospect of seeing a cofher of Australia I had never seen before, I accepted and hoped to pull up well after the Big H which I was training hard for at the time0 With a week to go, I was regretting my decision. I had really flattened myself doing a PB in the Big M and had pulled up very tired. However, it was too late to chage my mindo I caught an early Friday flight to give myself a couple of days in the west to adjust to the 3 hour time difference. I was met in Perth by a great 63 year old Vet runner , Arthur Leggett, who had retired only the day before. He spent the first day of his re tirement giving me a marvellous tour of the city of Pertho I stayed with him and his wife that night and early next morning was collected by a car load of mad Poms, all members of the W.A.Vets Club and some of the most entertaining people I've ever met. They talked non-stop at full volume in a rich Bath brogue and kept me well amused for the long 5 hour drive down to Albany. They were all doing the marathon the next day and were as high as kites* I was passed on to Peter Green, president of the Albany A.C. and official organiser of the marathon. Peter took me all around Albany, up to the twin peaks of Mt.Clarence and MtoMelville, out to the incredibly rocky coastJine to see "The Gap" and "The Natural Bridge" and gave me a look at many of the historic buildings in Albany itself. He then ran me over the marathon course before depositing me at a 100 acre farm at Grasmere, where I was to stay the night with a member of the local athletic clubo Next morning, Iassembled with the other 150 runners near the woolstores and Steve GUY and I were introduced as the 'b ig shots' from the East. I could sense a feeling of resentment or coolness from the crowd and wondered about it . The usual camaraderie and friendliness I experience at at runs, particularly , was missing. I discovered why later on* I was a Vistorian and Vistoria is continually knocking off all their best league footballers I I was tackled about it many times that day as though I was perso nally responsible. Others had told me of the Wets's feelings of hostility towards Victo rians, but I had never actually experienced it before. However, the marathon took off at 7 am and I was disappointed to learn that the local girl I 'd promised to pull to a sub-3 hours had scratched with a stress fracture and didn't even start. The course started at the woolstores and consisted of 2 out-and-back loops. The first turn was at around 4km and the second at 23km. It was a fairly flat, fast course with a few undulations and a good road surface. It wove through farmland, sparse scrubby bush and looped around a beautiful lake at Grasmere before finishing back at the woolstoreso I ran fairly steadily at 2*50 pace until about 35km, fighting the strong south-westerly headwind up until the turn at 23km. There was not much chatter in the field. We were all working too hard to maintain pace against the wind. Besides, they were all doing their damdest to beat the big shots from the East. The remarkable young local star, Harvey ASKEW, aged 12 years, ran alongside me for a while and went on to finish in an amazing 3*09*57. The field became very strung out and at one stage I was almost stopped in my tracks by two enormous Iguana lizards, over 1 metre long, who rose up high on their long homy legs to stare at me before proceeding jerkily across the road. The locals call them racehorse lizards and say they are a common sight over there. From the organisational point of view, the marathon couldn't be faulted. They provided sponge stations mid-way between the 5km drink stops and these were really appreciated as it became very humid. Accurate times on certificates were given within minutes of fini shing and the presentations were held soon after. The race was won by a veteran runner, FRANK SMITH(40; of Perth in 2*30*36, second place went to guest runner STEVE GUY in 2*31*06. The strong wind had taken the edge of top performances. I won the women's sec tion in 2*55*35» not very scintillating, but good enough for a women's course record. Next was JACKIE B0XMDINE(24) of Perth in a PB 3*0432. Seven other women finished. continued V.M.C.NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1983 MABCH V0L .14 Ho. 4 Albany Marathon( cont») At the presentations they ballot ted a TAA return fare to Melbourne between the first four WA men and the first WA woman, and Hank Stoffers, a 41 year old who was fourth in 2 *33*13* won the trip. I was presented with a lovely pottery casserole dish which I passed on to the first local girl, Jackie Boxendine, who had done a PB by 4 minutes and this seemed to help in promoting east/west friendship o The age-category winners were preseated with beautiful wooden shields made from a she-oak grown on the farm where I 'd stayed the night before. They had been shaped, carved out and lacquered by inmates of the local prison» A great BBQ followed and I was overwhelmed by the hospitality and friendliness of the people, now that the ice had been broken0 The earlier reservations I had felt seemed to be dissolved by the mutually shared agony of the marathon. I left for Perth after lunch with the Maddisons, who took me on a 7 hour scenic route which wound through hundreds of acres of pine plantations, orchards and bushland, where wild flowers grea in profu- sion« It was a beautiful drive* I left for Melbourne next morning, having made some great friends and with fond memories of the west* The date for the 1983 marathon is Sunday, November 6th, if you happen to be over that wayo

XXX XXX XXX HONOLULU MARATHON 1982 Bussell Parsons. I f you're into running for any, all or more of the following reasons* -For the FUN of it - For satisfaction and personal achievement - For fitness - For frienship - then, the HONOLULU MARATHON is for YOU I Consider.. .on my third visit to the islands for the 10th anniversary, 12 000 strong Honolulu Marathon festival ( i t 's more than a marathon, it 's a happening), I had to endvre hardships such as* -Jogging, swimming, surfing amid a community where activity is appreciated, accepted and encouraged. -an exhilarating, emotional 6.00 am start. -High humidity, some rain, frequent drink stations (3km)thousands of spectators lining the route, hula shows, hoses, breakfast-by-the-road groups and the massive crowd at the Kapiolani Park finish* .Competing in my 30-39 age group among 3,300 males* -Being passed by a guy dressed as a cow(ken "Cowman" Shirk);he ran sub-3 hours. •Passing a fully dressed waiter complete with tray and wine bottle;he ran about 3*10. -A Carbo Party to end them all; T-shirt swapping, finishers photos and a video cassette to reflect upon. -Enjoying the female entry* -Finishing ( 2157) amid the euphoric atmosphere, music and spontaneous friendship. Honolulu is truly the people's marathon, and while the clinics and race itself elicit great respect for the elite runners and sectional winners, the event is for the mass of the field, the satisfaction eachgains being accentuated by the natural and unashamed way the people of the islands cheer, encourage and express their emotional support. This has been a completely unsolicited contribution; I would like to think other will experience the pleasure so many have achieved from this remarkable event. C .NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1983 MARCH VOL*14 No. 4 SDRE FEET. BUT A GOOD TAN I F IJI MARATHON 1982. Andrew Thomas <, After two enjoyable trips to the USA and NZ, combining running and travelling, I thought I 'd use the last of my savings to visit F iji on Tuesday, September 14, to run in the Marathon in Suva on the 19th* I arrive in Nadi in the late afternoon to be greeted by stifling heat and humidity and instantly wondered what I was letting myself in for* I had 4 days to acclimatise, so the next day I headed off at 9 am for a run to test out the conditions. I ended up battling my way through a slow 10km, partly because of the heat and partly due to the lack of suitable tunning paths, even along the main roads from my hotel in Nadi proper0 The traffic is also a hazard as they tend to go for you instead of trying to avoid you I After a couple of days shopping and lunging by the pool, I took the bus from Nadi to Suva, where the marathon was to be held. The trip of 120 miles took over 5& hours and was beyond description for unoamfortability (is there such a word ?) but at least it was cheapo Suva greeted me with a typical (apparently) downpour of monsoonal quality* It was still hot and incredibly humid, but at least the sun wasn't out, so I was hopeful these condi tions would last until Sunday. That evening, Friday, there was a dinner at a local Chinese restaurant for overseas entries, which included 6 New Zealanders, a couple of West Samoans (who were complaing about the cold 1) and myself, plus a few local entrants. We all ate plenty of carb's and talked plenty of running and I was introduced to my billet for the weekend, Harry Nicol, an Englishman, sent out to F iji on a Government contract and doomed to 3 years of stifling heat, monsoonal dowmxmrs and no T*V*l(They have no T.V. in Fiji). Just a short run on the Saturday, some sightseeing and an earlv night for the 5*30 am start (to avoid the sun, because it was just as hot as in the day)* 78 starters lined up in the dark at 5*30 am at the National Stadium* Unfortunately, the rain had cleared the previous day, so once the sun was up we were in for a torrid time* Because of the conditions I was hoping, all going well, just to break 3 hours* The course was basically out and back, with a couple of small detours on the way out, and wetot out along the main road through the city towards Nadi and then back again* It sure was strange starting in the dark, but after 20 minutes or so the sun was on its way up, but hopefully wouldn’t worry us for about tj- hours0 The humidity was very high and I was sweating pretty heavily even before the gun went. I f you need crowds to urge you on , then F iji is not for you* Apart from the people on the aid stations, most people you saw thought you were era 2^ * Mind you, I think the people oh the aid stations thought we were cra^y too* However, I enjoyed this marathon immensely. The course is interesting and scenis (and smelly past the town dump I) . There were a fe\f hills at around 10-22km and 26-30km, which for seme unknown reason I handled really well, whereas visually they are the end of me* The last 10km was flat, but by this time there was a bit of a headwind and the sun was really burning down* It was extremely hot, of course, but with aid stations every mile with ice cold sponges, I found I could make it to within si^vt of the next before I started to die. I ran virtu ally by myself the whole way and after setting off at 2*50 pace and expecting to lose 8 or 9 minutes in the last half, I managed to get home in a very pleasing 2 *52*48 for seventh place. I managed to handle‘the conditions very well, don't ask me why ( what a shame the Big M wasn't in 30 heat I) , and it was one of those rare marathons where I felt good, strong and confident with no thoughts of quitting, something I usually fall prey to at one stage or another. Anyway, New Zealanders ran 1 ,2 ,3 with winner Peter Arkwright 2*24*29 being a respectable time for the conditions and for his first marathon I Mind you, he missed most of the sun and I felt s o r r y for the 5 hour finishers0 There were some sorry sights that hit the finish line and some worse ones that didn't make it that far, but on the whole I don't think anyone was in serious trouble* After spensing that afternoon looking for shells on one of the local reefs, and being slowly burned to a cinder, there was a pos-marathon dinner where we all received our certificates and T-shirts and presentations were made to the various winners. There were heaps of spot prizes (I didn't get one, but I think the other 77 entrants did, and some got twol) including a return trip to New Zealand or vie versa* Strangely, the organiser, Paddy Ryan, an ex-New Zealander with no longing for his homeland won a couple of prizes. V*M.C.NEWSLETTER ATJTUMN 1983 MARCH VOL. 14 No0 4 Sore Feet. But a Good Tan(cont•) I think this needs investigating I Actually, Paddy and his wife Felicity were very help ful to all involved and deserve a lot of credit for doing such a good job0 Paddy ran 2*50*17 for 6th place and was, as Peter Meares (ABC commentator) would say "Off his Tree" with his run. On the Monday it was back to Nadi on the express bus (this one took only 5 hoursl) and, after a day's shopping duty free, it was back to Melbourne on the Tuesday eveningo A thoroughly enjoyable trip I can easily recommend, but not for PB seekers I There's plenty to see and do in Fiji and you can have great fun shopping duty free. Maybe someone could arrange a tour for runners, it 's quite cheap. It was all very lovely and was in fact my second last run in the U»K. On Tuesday following, I went down with another cold and on Thursday we departed for on our way home. We were four days in Tokyo and I managed three runs round the perimeter of a highly ornamental park. Returning through the park after one of these workouts I was caught in a torrential downpour., I will never forget running up a long flight of steps whilst some thousands of gallons of water cascaded down then. This bizarre experience of "running up a waterfall" was a fitting climax to two years and two months of running round the world. P .S . I didn't make the 'Big M' - another bloody cold It

Ehgland lay under a heavy blanket of snow for several weeks. Six-lane motorways usually had only one lane cleared in each direction and many small towns were cut o ff. Even the Queen couldn't make it back to Buckingham Palace one day and was forced to spend the night in a rural inn. On Wimbledon Common near where we lived the lakes froze and hundreds of adults and children showed their fom on ice skates. On Richmond Park, which is hillier, the snow was packed with skiers and tobogganers o Runners like me, forced to run in the dark before work, had special problems - the slush on the roads and pavements froze during the night and made them extremely slippery. At weekends, however, we could take to the parks and run across the fresh snow. By the end of January the snow had melted and I teamed up with a neighbour in training for the Marathon (his entry was accepted, mine wasn't)o He was getting out for some 30km runs and I waa accompanying him for 1 5km, usually around the hilly perimeter of Richmond Park, past the herds of grazing deer. At Easter, we drove across France to Alsace, an area th French and Germans have been fighting over for centuries. The area is noted for its German-style wines and restaurants. At one of these I ordered a dozen snails but only ate one - our 3 year old daughter scoffed the restI (She still says "look, an escargot" when she finds a snail in our garden). The Bank Holiday on May 3rd saw me lining up for my first race in 1982, the 'Ted Pepper' Memorial Seven (miles) at Beckenham,Kent• British Olympian, Bem ie Ford, gave a running exhibition to win in 33*10. I was contented with my 42*36 midfield placing off an ave rage of 40km per week for the year to date» On Sunday, May 9th, I collected Charles Macek (Monash AC) from Heathrow and took M i to watch ' inspiring finish In the London Marathono Charles stayed with us for a week and "kept me honest" on our morning runs on the Commono The 16km pack run with the Hercules-Wimbledon blokes in Richmond Park on May 23rd in spired an unaccustomed burst of prose in my diary* -"Kept with the pack until spraining R« ankle at halfway. Then light shower, followed by drenching cloudburst.'Wrenched L 0 knee on last downhill bit. Ho traction in NB 730's." (Sorry, N.B.l) At the end of May we had four days in Sweden. We stayed near a park in Stockholm and on my morning runs I marvelled at the Swedes walking their dogs, each owner armed with a plastic bag and a small spade, lest their beasts should spoil the national reputation for cleanliness I Saturday, June 26th, saw the arrival of more running company in the person of 0.Scotch's Neil Lucas, and once again I was "kept honest". On July 16th, we drove from London to St.Omer in France, to commence our annual hol'so Next day I had a raging temperature and flu 1» We still covered several hundred km's and I managed to drive straight across a level crossing when the red light was on - my closest shave in thousands of km's driven on the Continent since 1965* The following day we reached our destination of Tallories, on Lake Annecy nearthe Swiss border. Once I had recovered, I managed a few runs along the picturesque lakeside roads, fanning has yet to catch on in France, but the roads were clogged with budding Hinaults and Andersons, it being just after the Tour de France. The thrid week of the holidays was spent at Wimbledon and I did some heavy (for me) training, 16km and 10km on alter nate days, with a 30km run on the Thursday.-My "Big M" entry had just gone in .» 0n September 4th I took part in the "Blenhei* 12"(miles) around Blenheim Palace, near Oxforde It was a three lap course, including a long steep hill and several undulations, on a hot day» Ian Ray, who ran for Qigland in the Brisbane Marathon, won comfortable in 62*08. The first Vet finished outright 6th in 66*06. I felt jaded due to my heavier training and struggled home in 80*18 - 105th out of 242 finishers» m P DEVIL MARATHON. 21-11-1982. Stuart Nicolo At 6o30 am on Sunday, November 21, 1982, 165 runners started off In the South Melbourne Athletic Club's *1982 Red Devil Marathon'. For background, this marathon has changed considerably from the previous years. Firstly, a change of sponsor from Olympic Tyres to Bed Devil Instant Printers meant a change of name for the *ace. Next, the club deci ded to change the course from around Princes Parle, Carlton, to have the event in its district. This meant finding a 10km circuit which was done using the roads around Albert Park; Lake and other surrounding roads In the area. Another change was trying to give the runners after-race refreshments and facilities. The Army helped us in this area by providing their barracks. On the day, the roads were closed off by the Police and the club had officials aAwn-tng- all strategic points around the course. The weather was perfect - cool and s t ill0 The marathon got under way and very quickly the patterns were set. Graeme Clew immediately went to the lead and stayed there all the way to finish in a PB of 2 :2 1 :26o Unfortunately for him, he had no one to run with and cramped over the closing stages. After Graeme, there was an Interesting group who kept each other honest and provided real interest for the spectators. David Bland, in coming second with 2131 *32, was pleased to run a steady race after a quicker but disappointing Big M time. Ian Comthwaite from Traralgon cut 7 minutes off his previous PB achieved in the Big M 5 weeks earlier. At 20 years of age his time looks good for the future. Bruce Hooley was another to improve his PB by 7 minutes in placing 6th. First woman home was Jan Pearson from Traralgon, again a PB time with 3*06*42 0 A fair amount of massage was needed by Jan after the race before collecting her well earned winner's prize. There was a lot of interest in the women's race with only 12 minutes separating the first three placings. The Sri Chinmoy running team was well represented with 3 entrants. First Veteran was Mai Scott, Vic Vet Club, in a time of 2*44*23* He was pursued by Leo Jones who finished with a time of 2*49*08. For the Junior ranks, Martin Day came down from the A .C .T . and ran 2*59*22 to finish 32nd overall. 116 finished the race, 35 of them under the 3 hour barrier. One of the highlights of the day was having Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Robert deCastella run around the course on the day while supporting his father, Rolet, and his brother-in-law, Graeme 9lews<> Robert felt that the course had a lot of potential 0 After the race, the runners enjoyed the refreshments put on by the club and analysed the day and course. One of the points was a feeling that there were possibly too many turns to break running rjrthm, but overall, with the weather being perfect and the road surface good and flat, reactions were favorable. Robbie Wallace beat the old record of Gary Henry* s 49*48 by almost 1 min, but he had staunch opposition from Norbert Rautenberg, a well performed West German road track runner, over here for a 'training holiday'o The next 6 places also provided an interesting battle as last year's winner, Peter Larkins, in spite of being 45 seconds faster this time, was almost swamped in the endo Richmond Harriers, led by 'Moose' O'Callaghan, had the organisation functioning well and deserve our thanks for a job well done as also do the bystanders and the children who did a mighty job in trying to keep the runners supplied with drinking water and sponges. ********************************************* 13-2-1983 RESULTS: Toshihiko SEKO 2:08:38 2 .Takeshi SOH 2:08:55 3.Rodolfo GOMEZ(Mex)2:09»12 JEFF COCLE was representing Austrilia, but had a disappointing run owing to stomach cramps and finished in the 30*s in the placings after being with the leaders in the early stages. Jeff apparently pulled a muscle in training just prior to the event but has now recovered and hopes to be right for the .

Page 18 1EST AUSTRALIAN MABATHON CLUB NEWS, Editor: Rod Holland. We have received the Summer 1982 issue and full of news it is too* The W.A.M.C. is expanding and so is the marathon opportunity with 3 established and a 4th about to be launched, when there were only 1 or 2 opportunities a few years ago. The Club Committee had a few changes: Jim Langford retired from the Presidency to try for more manning fitness, Phil Wall was transferred in his employment and handed the Newsletter over to Rod Holland, Laurie Pigsrott is Secretary while Jeff Joyce took on the President's job. Jim stood down after 2 years as Club President after guiging the Club through a difficult transitional period. He has worked flat out for the WAMC in that period and was instru mental in getting them into computers, the saviour of the Registrar. Jim has also been one of the guiding forces beMnd the People's Marathon* Jeff Joyce is a key organiser of the People's Marathon and the Race Director of the Telethon Pun Run. The Annual General Meeting (held in November 1982) voted to set aside % 4000 for future computer development within the WAMC. Kevin Basley and Coli Junner were presented with their lifemembership medallions at the AGM, after being named Life Members at the 1981 AGM. At the time of the 1982 AGM membership stood at more than 630, as against the previous year's 385* A total of 33 events were organised in 1992 which will rise to 35 in 1983<> the Club became an incorporated body and was recognised by the Sports Federation of WA. The WAMC severed its links with the Athletic Association of W.A. this year and did not seek to re-affiliate with that body. The Club also invested in a Chronomix digital clock and it has been rented out to various outside functions, notably the 1962 Fun Run. Sponsorship is going well with a total of seven sponsored events this year: Telethon FR, People's Marathon,Gnangara 20km, Darlington ^Marathon, Founder's Ten,Christchurch 12km and the One Hour Bun. CONTRAST TO ANYTHING YOU MAY BE TOLD the date of the Victorian Association Marathon, March 27th, 1983, was sprung onto delegates to the Council of the Association. There was no consultation with the VMC RR0-~ ^ V «M.C.NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 1983 MARCH VOL.14 No. 4 WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF IT ? ODDS AND ENDS AMD RANDOM THOUGHTS, Fred Lester* POLITICS USING SPORT is with us again - marvellous the way politicians hover around the winners like flies around the honey pot I It is long past being a question of ethics, arguments along these lines are futile when no obvious service to sport can be discerned in the handing out of Nod tickets, appointment as patrons, etc. These things have been a matter of political; convenience for many years, no matter which colour or level« Rather than becoming side-tracked into personal bickerings it is far more important for sports people to coolly evaluate the merits of persons standing for positions on their past record in this respect and the amount of involvement with which they follow up any promises* MAJOR ATHLETIC MEETINGS so far this seasons have shown up a lamentable attitude among our track middle-distance runners» Continuous backing and filling in the races, with consequent poor times and spectacles, have done nothing to improve our standards. It is no good to expect overseas stars to do it for us, on the contrary, they provide the opportunity for our aspiring champions to use these races against than as hit-outs. Up and coming runners have nothing to lose, if they go out to make times of international standing they will force visiting athletes to also show more of their real merit. After all, Scott, Walker & Co* are not likely to be very happy to have their prestige dented by some relatively unknowns I Maybe we could take a leaf out of the long-distance runners books, deCastella, Andrews and Whitty didn't mess about and achieved P .B .s , Deek capping the hard racing with a magnificent World Best for 15km, 42*46 I 0 *, alternately, if some of our long distance runners dropped down in their distances they may very well give the 1 500ny/milers some hurry-up. WHAT PRICE AMATEURISM? is a question being increasingly asked around the athletic sceneo What is the big difference between trust accounts (from which you can draw expenses connected with your athletic pursuit) and private accounts ? Whatever happened to the attempt to try and eliminate the cleavage between "Professionals" and "Amateurs" ? At least they are honest about it in some sports such as Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Skiing and several others, many of them part of the Olympic Movement. It certainly makes it very awkward for the average athlete to explain to the man in the street* We read of newspaper reports such as a large sum of money, including prizemoney, stolen from an international athlete who appeared at AAU sponsored meetings. Prize lists for 'Amateur' controlled marathons advertise prizes of $5,000 and I4»000plus as well as smaller sums* There is only one thing left to do * Drop the sham and admit openly that whoever is doing the promoting of big events is in it to make money, at least let us know where and w ho to the money is going i WHEN ARE WE GOING TO WAKE UP to the fact that the best time of the day to conduct com petition is from about 1 hour before sunset and make use of the twilight hours so that we can give our athletes conditions where they can best utilise their efforts ? Early morning, frftm just before sunrise, is also a good time but not for more strenuous act ivity before the body has moved for a while. I f proof be needed, surely the PB twilight meetings, Bull Zatopek series and major night meetings have given ample proof by now that a switch to more competition late in the day is a practical proposition. The thin spread of spectators during hot afternoons battles in the sun is leaving us nothing to lose by going for the change* It will be a matter of changing old habits more than anything else, quite apart from being easier on offcials having to stand out on the track without protection from the elements« VICTORIAN MARATHON CLUB and ROAD RUNNERS members come from a very wide variety of walks of life . They all have something to contribute to make our Club function for their own and our mutual benefit. We will be electing a new Committee to co-ordinate the many tasks needed for that, but that does not preclude anyone from assisting in one capacity or another* It could be on the production of the Newsletter, sales of T-shirts St singlets, organising competition, scouting for new venues, printing material or making signs, promoting the club, etc. Don't wait to be asked, if you have an idea talk it over with your Committee, it will keep us moving along with the times*
