April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

10 | SPORT | RUGBY S1 Sunday Independent 6 March 2016 Always check the background The 70 so-called experts lack the qualifications or experience to dictate to us about rugby injuries NEIL FRANCIS HIS one is about failure in the media, more specifically failure to question. I read the financial press every day. On a regular basis TI come across articles where I am told that some Gordon Gekko-type hedge fund principal or financier tells us he is really worried and he thinks sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. The explanations as to why this will happen are somewhat plausible but please . no panic. There is no byline, no author, and no references — nothing under the piece to suggest any attribution. We have no idea where it came from or who penned it. It just appeared. There is nothing to substantiate it or no counter-argument or editorial to challenge it. So we read it and repeat it to our mates. I see Gordon Gekko says sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. It then becomes a fact. What is indisputable is that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The boys have all short positions in place and when the forest fire starts, they collect. A month later we are all blown away. That fella Gordon Gekko is a bloody genius. Put something out there in the newspaper and if nobody checks or challenges it, well then it is a fact. Wednesday evening came slowly and my editor calls.

  • Rabodirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14
RaboDirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2013/14 Round 17: 21-23 March 2014 PREVIEW ROUND 17 Having led Leinster to the RaboDirect PRO12 title last season, Ireland coach Joe Schmidt took the RBS 6 Nations crown at the first time of asking in a tense finish to the Championship last weekend. Following on Ireland’s success it is perhaps appropriate that as the RaboDirect PRO12 returns to centre stage three of the top four teams are Irish Provinces. Schmidt’s former team, Leinster are in action at the RDS on Friday night, they and Munster both host Italian opposition in round 17 and whilst the records seem to point in favour of two home wins, neither side can afford to slip up as they chase a top two finish. Third placed Ulster are also in action on Friday night, their bonus point win over Scarlets in their rearranged game last week has pulled them closer to the leaders as the battle for home advantage in the Play-Offs intensifies. Ospreys, the only non-Irish side currently in the Play-Off Zone, know they have a fight on their hands to maintain that position as Glasgow Warriors are just three points behind them but still have two games in hand. Ospreys face fellow Welsh Region Cardiff Blues on Friday night, whereas Glasgow Warriors welcome Scarlets to Scotstoun on Saturday, the Welshmen did not make up any ground on the top four in their rearranged fixture last week. The next two weeks could be critical in any team’s aspirations of making the end of season Play-Offs as the pressure starts to build towards the season finale.
