The past year saw us hold very much the same number of participants in our races in spite of still growing expansion of numbers in Pun Runs and increasing commercialism through a number of means, both in the Amateur and Professional fields* Cash and Trust Fund inducement for marketable sponsorship and promotion have taken over as prime con­ siderations, more and bigger at the expense of the comfort and enjoyment of the runners is the order of the day* It seems that those who seek manageability, a friendly and co-operative atmosphere with a feeling of caring for your fellow-runners and a quiet sense of achievement, whatever their personal reasons, are voting with their feet for the less pressurised runs where it is still people who count not numbers* This also is a growing trend, a back-lash as it were against the feeling of having your sport used, for sane ulterior purposes, even to the extent of promoting something from which you would prefer to distance yourself o There is a strong feeling among our VMC HR participants that oursis very much a club of runners, for runners and managed by runners* We have had it voiced on many occasions in this past period that we need to be somewhat more positive in our approach to make many more runners aware of our presence and other similar runner-orientated bodies* Attempts to have a Fun Run Co-ordinator carrying out a function in this direction have fizzled out basically because of the inability to compete within the commercial rat-race* We have managed to carry on very effectively with our program while the amalgamation of the men and women association into the V.A.A.
