A sunny day with a light gusty Northerly, forecast to build to 20knots late afternoon., & slack tide just turning to run in. The uncertain wind put the course down near the ferry, which always in gusty coming across the streets & buildings. Father’s Day had depleted the fleets, & Trailables were Reg Shades & Rabbit. It is always an impossible task to set a true windward Leeward on that course & wind .. just can’t get the last bit of angle. The work easily laid in one tack, but does keep crews guessing as to whether to just crack off a tad, or keep height all the way, but .. anyway .. a drag race. Rick & Millsey set a good Line, but it the leg is about who has clear air, the boat behind always trying to pinch above, & the boat to Leeward doomed. The wind held pretty true, so by the 4th final lap we all had the work leg pretty well figured out, where to free up & where to harden. Downwind, apart from the odd surprise, the 20knots never turned up, & no gybes .. made it another drag race. We all had some bursts off good pressure, so some rides thinking is this wind gonna keep sending me .. but most bursts of speed were fairly short, then back to watching for the next gust. Reg [Bill & Zac] did a better job of the day, & got the gun, with us other 2 not far behind. Nice to be back on the water, but let’s hope we don’t have to use that drag race course too often for CCs. MONOS Congratulations, Des, on another win! Roy looked great, in his new 125. Graeme T, with daughter at the helm of their NS/MG, made it to the Start-line, and back, without mishap (well done, folks). 3 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.richmondriver.yachting.org.au P.O. Huey did his best to get us into the swing (or swim) of things with a good ol’ blustery northerly. The course was set upstream of the RSL due to concerns about the rock wall coming into play. As is the norm for said conditions it was not pretty. While the wind strength wasn’t overly high there were the usual freight train bullets coming down the streets and between the buildings. The top mark was the usual lottery causing a number of missed roundings and whoops, let’s try that again scenarios. It was thanks to two of these that Sweet As… managed to overcome an abysmal start and pass first Neo and then No Waiting. Good to see Roy back on the water, albeit minus one hull. Roy is now showing his skills in a very pretty, refurbished 125 dinghy which used to belong to the club. After plumbing the depths with his mast for a while at the start line I’m not sure how many more swims he had before eventually retiring. Hopefully friendlier conditions next time Roy! Will we see the kite? Welcome back to Geoff on Neo too after an absence towards the end of last season. Others testing the water temp with a swim were Col and Norm. Col later related difficulties righting Shore Thing as neither of his righting ropes were tied on properly. Hmmm! Results have been posted so I won’t dwell on them. Suffice to say if you make a bum start all is not lost. Especially on our river. Not much away action to report on from the winter break. Most of the regulars bar me went to Wivanhoe to get lost in the mist and drift around in mostly light conditions. Yours truly took part in the Humpybong Winter Bash on the Sunday only for the marathon. A pleasant day out on Bramble Bay in 6-8kts of breeze. Definitely one for the calendar in future years if there’s a bit more wind. Will Richards scored a third at the Cootharaba All Boats on his Taipan and was also seen zipping around on a kite board? Most notable traveller story has to go to Zac who voyaged all the way to Poland for the “A” class worlds and scored a respectable 42nd out of 125 entrants. Zac sailed all races and came 11th and 9th in the first two. Well done young man. Ian Mitchie also attended finishing somewhat further back due to a couple of dnf’s. Helen and I are off to Townsville at the end of this month for a bit of a break, Sweet As... in tow, for the QUEENSLAND NACRA TITLES. No H is not taking up sailing with me again, opting to laze the days away in a hammock with a book while I brave the big chop on Cleveland Bay. The plan is to include a round Maggie Island race which will be awesome in the right conditions. Any more starters….?? Graeme T, Simon & son, and I (Ed), got started last Sunday. Baz repaired a gooseneck, free of charge. Kynan is doing some fibreglass repairs, for free (under close female supervision ;-)). Tony, at Ballina Fibreglass was going to squeeze in the job, at an extremely cheap “Club” price, but Kynan beat him to it. 5 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.richmondriver.yachting.org.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Newsletter Items, Idle Gossip, etc to [email protected] (Deadline midnight Monday) G'day Mark Earle dropped by the Club today, as he thought he'd find fellow water-people to whom he could promote the film of his 1985 expedition. He is planning a repeat journey (next year I think). This seems reasonable to me, as worth a brief mention in our newsletter if Phill or others agree.
