Hamamatsu Municipal Nursing School, Japan Study Abroad
Study Abroad Description:
Students will spend one week learning about Japanese culture and nursing in Japan. During their time in Japan, students will have an opportunity to visit the capital city of Tokyo and take the bullet train to Hamamatsu. Students will be welcomed to the Hamamatsu nursing school by fellow nursing students and will engage in a tea ceremony. They will have the opportunity to tour the nursing college, the public health center, and lastly the Hamamatsu medical center where students’ complete clinical rotations. During the experience, students will also have the opportunity to observe nursing procedures and demonstrations. Furthermore, students will attend a sophomore research presentation and observe the nursing graduation ceremony. Students will have an enhanced cultural experience while staying in local homes and sightseeing in the city of Hamamatsu.

Prerequisites: Must be a Sophomore or Junior in the WVU nursing program
Dates of the Study Abroad: February 27th- March 7th, 2020
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the study abroad, students will be able to: 1. Recognize cultural influences that impact nursing care provided in Japan 2. Identify 3 factors that lead to a high life expectancy in Japan 3. Describe two similarities and two differences between the healthcare systems in the US and Japan.
Study Abroad Evaluation:
Students will write a daily journal reflecting on the above learning outcomes and their daily experiences and observations. Students will write a 1-page reflection paper about their experience and submit to Dana Friend by March 27, 2020.
