  • Modern Alternative Popes*
Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

  • Venezuelan Catholic Church Over the 19Th and 20Th Centuries
SOCIETY AND DEVELOPMENT DOI: 10.12797/Politeja.10.2013.24.18 Agustín Moreno Molina Andrés Bello Catholic University Venezuelan Catholic Church over the 19th and 20th centuries Abstract The Catholic Church is a binding element for understanding the historical proc- ess of Venezuela after the three hundred years of Spanish rule, during which time, and along with the various forms of institutions inherited from the mother coun- try, customs and values were established that contributed to the development of the country. In this essay, we make an assessment of the role of the Catholic Church during the independence process, of its conflicts with the new republic during the second half of the nineteenth century, and the gradual recovery of its social presence during the dictatorship of Juan Vicente Gómez. Then, with the onset of representative democracy, the Church’s relation with the political power becomes regularized within a legal framework that allows it to continue in the exercise of his pastoral duties in a climate of respect and collaboration, but with a critical sense to the great problems of society. KEY Words Catholic Church, Venezuela, 19th and 20th centuries. atholicism in Venezuela, during its republican history, has gone through several Cstages, each, of course, with its problems and challenges. In the early days, and this is an extensively – though not systematically – studied chapter, what was at stake was the social influence of religious power, facing the recently created state power. Within these conflicts we can find those of Bishop Ramon Ignacio Mendez in 1830 and Felipe Guevara y Lira in 1870.
