26 PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET PNB School News

2019 PNB Summer Course Tour January is a double-duty month for School Director Peter Boal, Managing Director Denise Bolstad, and School faculty members who are traveling (plus School administrative staff who are processing stacks of material) for the 2019 Summer Course Audition Tour. This year’s 30- city tour included auditions in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, taught by former PNB principal dancer Kaori Nakamura. As of January 24, the School had auditioned more than 1,400 students with nine cities to go. PNB School’s highly regarded Summer Course is a five-week training intensive for students ages 12-18. The Audition Tour attracts talented students who are interested in PNB and may be considering careers as professional dancers. Similar to athletic scouting, it also gives the School an early opportunity to identify and follow students not enrolled during the year. The majority of our current Company dancers made first contact with PNB at a Summer Course audition.

NEW! STG Dance for PD® at PNB’s Francia Russell Center PNB School’s new collaboration with STG Dance for PD* offers dance classes for those with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. Each eight-week series, taught by professional dancers and teaching artists, addresses PD-specific concerns such as balance, flexibility, coordination, isolation, and gait. Whether taken seated or standing, classes are open to all levels of mobility, and no dance experience or diagnosis is required. Drop-ins are welcome and classes are always free! The STG Dance for PD* method, developed by Mark Morris Dance Group and Brooklyn Parkinson Group, is built on the idea that professionally trained dancers are movement experts whose knowledge is useful to persons with Parkinson’s disease. Find out more at PNB.org/PNBSchool.
