Considerazioni preliminari Lo scopo del presente lavoro è quello di affrontare, riconsiderandola criticamente, una ben nota questione di fonologia dell’ittito, osservata e studiata per la prima volta da E.A. Sturtevant in un articolo del 1932 (STURTEVANT [1932]) e sulla quale, nel corso dei successivi decenni, diversi studiosi si sono cimentati con pareri non di rado discordanti. Rimando all’imprescindibile e ormai classico lavoro di FRIEDRICH (1960), agli studi di KRONASSER (1956, 1966) e alle più recenti opere di MELCHERT (1994a), KIMBALL (1999), RIEKEN (1999), WATKINS (2004) e HOFFNER e MELCHERT (2008), oltre che al sillabario di Rüster e Neu (HZL) e al catalogo dei testi di Laroche (CTH), nonché alle specifiche monografie e agli articoli citati in bibliografia (e, di volta in volta, nel corso del lavoro), per tutto quanto attiene alla datazione e classificazione dei testi, alla descrizione dettagliata del sistema fonologico ittito, alla sistematica esposizione del sillabario cuneiforme, ai problemi legati alla “polifonia”1 e all’omofonia dei segni, ai criteri paleografici etc.2 Per quanto concerne poi i rapporti tra la lingua ittita e le altre lingue anatoliche (luvio, palaico, 3 licio, lidio, cario) rinvio a KAMMENHUBER (1969), oltre che, più specificamente, per il luvio, a MARAZZI (1990), MELCHERT (1993a, 2004b, 2005 etc.), STARKE (1990), VAN DEN HOUT (2007); per il palaico a KAMMENHUBER (1959), CARRUBA (1970, 1972), MELCHERT (2004e); per il licio a NEUMANN (1969), CARRUBA (1978), MELCHERT (1993b, 2004c), OETTINGER (1978); per il lidio a HEUBECK (1969), CARRUBA (1960), EICHNER (1986a, 1986b), GUSMANI (1964), MELCHERT (2004d), GÉRARD (2005); per il cario a MELCHERT (2004a) e alla ricca bibliografia ivi contenuta. Il presente studio, che non ha la pretesa di costituire un’opera di riferimento per i difficili e spesso non risolvibili problemi legati al sistema grafico ittito, infatti, farà sempre riferimento ai singoli manuali ogni qual volta sarà necessario rimandare a tutti quei peculiari problemi e approfondimenti che esulano dal circoscritto compito del lavoro. Lo scopo principale della ricerca è infatti quello di offrire un contributo monografico sulla questione specifica della cosiddetta lex Sturtevant, grazie all’analisi delle voci ittite che presentano interesse per tale fenomeno e alla rassegna critica delle principali soluzioni interpretative proposte nel corso del tempo. Per questo motivo, traendo spunto dai fondamentali dizionari etimologici al momento pubblicati (HW, HW2, CHD, HED, HEG e, più recentemente, KLOEKHORST [2008]) e operando una sintesi e un confronto critico tra le diverse 1 Con cui gli anatolisti fanno riferimento alla caratteristica tipica dei segni del sillabario ittito di possedere più di un valore fonetico, e di prestarsi, dunque, a “letture multiple”. KIMBALL (1999, p. 49 ss.) parla di “polyphonic signs”, ossia di segni che possono esser letti in diversi modi (la “polifonia” tout court farebbe invece riferimento più specificamente a diversi valori fonologici). La lettura “multipla” dei segni, in effetti, è dovuta all’adattamento del sistema ideografico sumerico a un sistema parzialmente sillabico. Cfr., fra gli altri, EICHNER (1980, p. 135), il quale ricorda una particolare caratteristica della “Zeichenpolyphonie” del sistema grafico ittito, secondo la quale un valore accessorio può presentare anche solo una piccolissima variazione nel consonantismo o nel vocalismo rispetto al valore principale del segno (EŠ = iš, BA = pá, TA = dá etc.). In questo caso, più che di “Zeichenpolyphonie”, si dovrebbe parlare, secondo lo studioso, di “(Zeichen)Diaphonie”. Il fenomeno della “polifonia” andò aumentando quando il sistema si adattò per rendere l’accadico.     Hittite Historical Phonology after 100 Years (and after 20 years) H. Craig Melchert University of California, Los Angeles Abstract: On the centennial of Hrozný’s identification of Hittite as an Indo-European language I review the major issues in Hittite historical phonology, in comparison not only with his sketch of 1917 but also with my own treatment of 1994. After some methodological preliminaries and an overview of major revisions required by the last two decades of scholarship, I focus on the PIE syllabic sonorants. Hrozný (1917: 187) already tentatively concluded that their regular outcome in Hittite was aR, and this has become the standard view, but he also entertained that syllabic nasals before stops could appear as simply a The demonstration by Goedegebuure (2010) that CLuvian zanta is the cognate of Hittite katta ‘down’ has renewed the question of the development of the syllabic nasals before stops. Confirmation that <u> in Hittite spells /o/, including in the result of *w , also casts doubt on the alleged direct change of *w > uR by resyllabification (Melchert 1994a: 126–127). I reexamine the entire question of the development of syllabic sonorants in Hittite in the light of these new findings. Craig Melchert, Chair This dissertation develops optimality-theoretic analyses of word-level stress assignment in two languages with lexical accent, Cupeño (Takic, Uto-Aztecan) and Hittite (Anatolian, Indo- European); it also assesses the implications of word stress in Hittite and the other Anatolian languages for the reconstruction of stress assignment in Proto-Indo-European. I argue that stress assignment in Cupeño is governed by the BASIC ACCENTUATION PRINCI- PLE (BAP; Kiparsky and Halle 1977): stress is assigned to the leftmost lexically accented mor- pheme, else to the word’s left edge. This analysis is compared to that of Alderete (2001c), who argues that Cupeño shows accentual root faithfulness — i.e., that the accentual properties of roots are privileged over non-root morphemes. I show that the BAP analysis is both simpler and attains greater empirical coverage than the root faithfulness analysis, which fails to account for certain attested stress patterns that are captured under the BAP analysis. Thus reanalyzed, Cupeño has two important typological implications. First, without support from Cupeño, root faithfulness may be unattested as a feature of lexical accent systems. Second, Cupeño provides a clear typological parallel for the ancient IE languages on the basis of which the BAP was posited — in particular, Vedic Sanskrit — as well as for Hittite, where I argue that it is also operative.

Orthography & Phonology 1 CHAPTER 1 ORTHOGRAPHY AND PHONOLOGY The Cuneiform Writing System of the Hittites 1.1 The Hittite texts were written by professional scribes on clay tablets, impressed with a stylus and then dried in the sun. The writing system derives ultimately from Lower Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq, where it was devised by the Sumerians and adapted centuries later for the writing of the semitic Akkadian language. In addition to cuneiform writing on clay tablets the Hittites occasionally made use of a hieroglyphic script (Plate 2). During the earliest phase of their kingdom’s history, called the Old Hittite period, the kings used this hieroglyphic script to inscribe their names and titles on stamp and cylinder seals. Much later, during the so-called New Hittite (or Empire) period, kings began to use this system for carving royal inscriptions on cliffs or stelae.     Chapter 1 Akkadian and Amorite Phonology Giorgio Buccellati University of California, Los Angeles 1.1. The graphemic base 1.1.1. The writing medium Akkadian and Amorite are dead languages, in the specific sense that their speakers died out around 1600 B.C. (for Amorite) and 600 B.C. (for Akka- dian). Our reconstruction of both languages is thus based exclusively on the written record, cxcept for the inferences that may be drawn from the fact that they are related to other Semitic languages for which there are infor- mants. The written medium, though rich in information, presents consider- able limitations which must be taken into account. In addition, two other filters must be reckoned with, particularly in any discussion of phonology. (A) The writing system was not originally developed for a Semitic lan- guage, but rather for Sumerian. The process of adaptation to Semitic was gradual and organic, and was not governed by a-priori linguistic considera- tions. Especially in the early periods, the scribes, who were conversant with Sumerian, maintained the basic graphemic oppositions which were best suit- ed for Sumerian and subsumed under them a variety of Semitic oppositions. For instance, it has been suggested (Gelb 1961: 31-33) that Sumerian had an opposition between stops (without distinction of voice) and aspirates; this two-way graphemic opposition was used to render a three-way opposi- tion, in Akkadian, between voiced, voiceless, and emphatics. The late Hittite tablet KBo 4. 13 contains the description of a ritual with a repeated sequence of offerings to some groups of gods and has been considered to be part of the AN.TAH.SUM-Festival texts ensemble, perhaps a description of the first day of this ceremony.2 As a matter of fact, the AN.TAH.SUM-plantv appears here, but only as an offering among others; the pantheon is composed by three principal gods, the Sun Deity of Arinna, the Storm-God of Zippalanda and the Protective Deity of Hatti and by others I Since the use of alternative cuneiform signs, such as TA/DA or DA/TA, has nothing to do with a real Hittite phonology, but depends only on the scribal tradition, a conventional spelling is adopted here for the place names in scriptio continua, where only inter-vocalic single plosives are represented as voiced, whereas if they are geminate or part of a consonantic group they appear as voiceless (with the exception of the group -nda). This much-heralded book (hereinafter referred to as HHP) lives up to expectations as regards content. Kimball independently undertook a project similar to Melchert’s Anatolian Historical Phonology (= AHP), limiting herself however to Hittite. Though as it is impossible to do any- thing with Hittite’s ancestor without considering the other Anatolian languages, K. cites them fairly often to illustrate Hittite forms. According to AHP’s introduction, the two authors were careful not to read each other’s manuscripts, although they of course consulted each other’s previous work. AHP came out in 1994, while this book carries the date 1999. HHP has however been rather long in the edit- ing (with commendable results), so that in reality the text stems from more or less the same time as AHP, which it cites on occasion. K. states (p. 35) that her work is aimed not only at students of Anatolian and IE phonology, but also at scholars of other branches of Hittitology and Ancient Near East studies. It therefore has to be readable and clear to non-specialists. It seems successful in this regard, in the presentation of indi- vidual entries, though a basic familiarity with Indo-European phonology and phonetic/phonological terminology is neces- sary to use it. K. starts with an extensive discussion of the Hittite writ- ing system, and the problems in interpreting it, since it is hardly a clean reflection of how Hittite was actually pro- nounced.
