A V 0 C A B AU L A R ¥ M N G L I S H, MALA Y, AND SARAWAK D A Y A K S . BY THE REV. WILLIAM CHALMERS, LATE STUDENT OF ST. AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE, AND MISSIONARY TO SARAWAK. CANTERBURY: iNTED"’AT ST. AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE PRESS, 1R61. PREFATORY REMARKS. Some of the words given in the Malay Column, though they are not to be found in the Dictionaries of either Marsden or Crawfurd, are yet in common colloquial use in the District of the River Sarawak. Those placed within Brackets are not in general use there. Words marked “ (Seb. Dy.) ” properly belong to the Dialect of the Sebuyow Dayaks, but are of common use among Sarawak Malays. The Dayak Column is the Dialect spoken by the Sentah Tribe on the Southern Branch of the River Sarawak. The Pronunciation of the; other tribes of the same branch of the River varies slightly from that of Sentah, the chief difference, however, is the substitution of the letter “ o ” for the “ Sentah “ u.” The Dialect of the Tribes of the Western Branch of the River is also substantially the same as that of those of the Southern Branch, but variations in Words as well as in their Sound is not un frequent. Words marked “ (W) ” belong solely to the Dialect of this Branch of Sarawak River. w. c. Kuap, Sarawak, Borneo, January, 1861.
