See by Your Ears Concept

With advanced artistry of sound artist evala who explores sound and space, by fusion of advanced technology, A project that produces an unprecedented hearing experience. As the name “look in the ear” implies, it started in 2017 with the concept of “looking at the world from the sound (ears) and designing the world from the sound” as a concept. Until today, the creation of visual superiority had been sweeping through, but now the “era of designing invisible things” has already arrived. For example, an electric car that does not generate engine sound changes its design icon from “shape” to “sound”, and it is also strongly conscious of the importance of sound design as an important factor to support public space and corporate identity I’m starting. In these times [See by Your Ears], while developing a sharp art experience in various parts of the world, it has developed into a project that changes the thinking of ideas and ideas of society and corporate technology and creative. Sound Lab introduces an experimental platform that proposes new architecture and urban design, focusing on music / sound and art, with Music x Art x Architecture as the theme.

evala Sound artist / Musician / Composer

Born 1976 in Kyoto, Japan. Has been creating and performing edgy works of electronic music, while at once engaging in prismatic sound design with the use of cutting-edge technology. He has been exploring music experiences by playing the multi- channel sound system as new instruments. and developed a whole new acoustic experience and a new way of spatial composition, which based on his primary project called "See by Your Ears." In the project, he exhibited his main piece “Octyon Megalotis”(Sonar+D Spain, 2017) “Our Muse” (ACC, Korea 2018), a spatial audio experience collaborated with Sonic Surf VR of Sony “Acoustic Vessel Odyssey”(SXSW, Austin 2018).

音楽家、サウンドアーティスト。先鋭的な電子音楽作品を国内外で発表するほか、立 体音響のサウンドシステムを新たな楽器として駆使し、2016年より「耳で視る」とい う新たな聴覚体験を創出するプロジェクト「See by Your Ears」を始動。 音が生き物のように躍動的にふるまう現象を構築し、新たな音楽手法としての“空間 的作曲”を提示する。代表作に「大きな耳を持ったキツネ」(Sonar+D, Barcelona 2017) 「Our Muse」 (ACC, Gwangju Korea 2018)のほか、SonyのSonic Surf VRと コラボした時空を旅する音響体験「Acoustic Vessel Odyssey」(SXSW, Austin 2018)などを展開。

“See by Your Ears” is a sound project by the Japanese sound artist evala, which takes the audience to a whole new auditory experience.

When the audience enter the entirely dark anechoic room alone, he/she will enjoy a 10 minutes 3D sound piece. Listening to its resonant system carefully, images rise into the mind without the need of vision creating an acoustic illusion that construct various objects. This phenomena is described as “seeing with your ears”, the sound illusion immerses the audience in a subtle and profound virtual reality.

「耳で視る」という新たな知覚体験を導き、 空間を変容させるサウンドアート。

体験者が1人ずつ小さな無響室の中に入ると、次第に暗闇が訪れ、360度から音が鳴り響く 楽曲がスタートする。

その音はまるで生き物のように飛び回り、体中を弄ったかと思えば、時に森林や浜辺や、 または宇宙の中にいるようなイメージを導く。 「何かが視えた」と多くの体験者が口にするこの不思議な現象を、 evalaは「耳で視る」と表現する。本シリーズでは、『大きな耳をもったキツネ』『hearing things #Metronome』『Our Muse』など様々な楽曲を発表し、それぞれ独自の世界観を構築 している。

多彩で豊穣な音が響き渡るとき、その「音」は自分の体の内側にも 宿っていることを知るだろう。

This program can bring one’s sense just as if he/she has co-sensuous perception. However, interestingly this complex program will not always be able to produce the similar phenomena under the same situation. It’s not until evala “tuned" the computer program carefully at the site, it’s just like a piano tuner.

Then The resonance of the sounds will alter depending on the environment of the location. So this phenomenon occurs from a magical chemical reaction with evala's sophisticated sound program and the resonance of the space.

Behind the philosophical core of this project, evala’s arsc exploraon proceeded the next stage of music experience. He describes "something invisible” as “unknown life.” It's related to the animisc view of life, and the non-human-centered world. The project is, therefore, a challenge to design the world via sound thinking.

Octyon Megalotis (2013)

A first music series of See By Your Ears has shown since 2013. #1 Octyon Megalotis was composed with sounds recorded around the forests and mountains of Kyoto, Japan. #3 Kugiuchi & Water #4 Glass Harmonica consist of recorded sounds for Japan.Also the performance of Japanese sound artist Akio Suzuki.

hearing things #Metronome (2016)

Inside the dark chamber, three spotlighted metronomes regular and accurately counting a simple rhythm. However with the visitor’s vision completely darkened and blocked, the metronomes’ sounds (picked up by small microphones) are gradually amplified, crushed, and expanded to the chaos composed by evala’s sophisticated computer algorithm, which expressed by multi-channel speakers.

Our Muse (2017)

Composed with various sounds recorded at Evala’s private room, as well as a holy place in Taketomi-island of Okinawa.

This title “Our Muse” related with his past piece "Our child's play" (2016). It was composed as a theme for a TV program titled "Whether AI is our angel or devil?" This idea inspired Evala, and he created an orchestra song using the artificial voice. So he includes his concept for AI in this title, AI might be "our child" not only angel or devil for human beings. Then, he expects to hear a subtle whisper spilled out from a computer shortly. Therefore, he asks a question, what will be the concept of "Muse" in this age?

香川県丸亀美術館/中津万象園にてサウンドアートの世界的パイオニア鈴木昭男とともに開催。コンピュー タ・ジェネレートプログラムと独自の立体音響技術、AI技術などを用いた先端的な音響空間と庭園を融合 させ、新感覚の「音の展覧会」を開催。

「Anechoic Sphere」シリーズ作品の一つとしてフィールドレコーディングした庭園の音や瀬戸内の海 の音を変容させ、現存最古の煎茶室「観潮楼」を含む庭園各所を音の世界で満たした。

This visuals are based on an audio analysis program with use of a chaotic algorithm called “Audio Architectural Visualization (AAV),” which Evala independently developed. The visual work shows a very complicated and vital behavior generated by what AAV program analyzes Evala’s 3D music piece “Anechoic Sphere - Our Muse.”

*At Media art festival of Asia Culture Center(Korea) in March 2018, this piece occasionally appeared at the massive screen (the width is over 70m) aka “Media Wall.” The sound universe enveloped in a small anechoic chamber unleashed as a high-intensity shine there.

Evala showed an immersive sound installation called Acoustic Vessel “Odyssey,” in collaboration with Sony’s latest spatial audio technologies. “Odyssey” will be showed in Sony’s brand campaign, called “Lost in Music” at Los Angels on 19-20 JAN and SXSW(Ausitin) in March 2018.

The experience will feature 576 speakers, which can create an unprecedented experience where sound field synthesis technology allows guests to follow various sounds as they move around them in the installation. Also, the light installation of the work is created by an art unit Kimchi&Chips.

The dynamic sounds surround the audience, which creates an immersive virtual experience like a space trip. It enables them to imagine different soundscape from an urban city to a forest, to inside water, also to the universe, as if they traveled beyond time and space. Evala describes this phenomena as "Seeing with your ears" as his primary project called "See by Your Ears." ことばを持つ前の人類は、どんな物語を共有していたのだろう。 古来、人々は音楽を奏で、ともに踊ることで、共同体の物語を紡いでいたのでは ないだろうか?

2020年、人間が本来持つ知覚を呼び起こし、音から物語を描く「映画」が誕生 する。

遠いどこかの海辺に佇む、老婆にも少女にも見える女性ーー。 溢れ出る豊穣な音に耳をすませるだけで、森の中にも、深海にも、あらゆる時空 間へと観客を誘い、それぞれの心象風景の中に無数のイメージを生み出してい く。

音楽家による、世界に類のないインビジブルな「音の映画」。 サウンドアーティスト evalaが仕掛けるのは、立体音響システムを駆使し、暗闇 の中で映画を “耳で視る” という新たな試みだ。

2019年8月のプレライブ公演を経て、待望のワールドプレミア上映となる本作 は、 ビジュアル偏重を極める現代社会に一石を投じる、革命的な体験 となるはず だ。
