Rhizomatiks Research X Elevenplay: Border”(2016/YCAM) See by Your Ears Concept With advanced artistry of sound artist evala who explores sound and space, by fusion of advanced technology, A project that produces an unprecedented hearing experience. As the name “look in the ear” implies, it started in 2017 with the concept of “looking at the world from the sound (ears) and designing the world from the sound” as a concept. Until today, the creation of visual superiority had been sweeping through, but now the “era of designing invisible things” has already arrived. For example, an electric car that does not generate engine sound changes its design icon from “shape” to “sound”, and it is also strongly conscious of the importance of sound design as an important factor to support public space and corporate identity I’m starting. In these times [See by Your Ears], while developing a sharp art experience in various parts of the world, it has developed into a project that changes the thinking of ideas and ideas of society and corporate technology and creative. When the audience enter the entirely dark anechoic room alone, he/she will enjoy a 10 minutes 3D sound piece. Listening to its resonant system carefully, images rise into the mind without the need of vision creating an acoustic illusion that construct various objects. However, interestingly this complex program will not always be able to produce the similar phenomena under the same situation. It’s not until evala “tuned" the computer program carefully at the site, it’s just like a piano tuner. Then The resonance of the sounds will alter depending on the environment of the location. So this phenomenon occurs from a magical chemical reaction with evala's sophisticated sound program and the resonance of the space. Behind the philosophical core of this project, evala’s arisic exploraion proceeded the next stage of music experience. He describes "something invisible” as “unknown life.” It's related to the animisic view of life, and the non-human-centered world. The project is, therefore, a challenge to design the world via sound thinking. However with the visitor’s vision completely darkened and blocked, the metronomes’ sounds (picked up by small microphones) are gradually amplified, crushed, and expanded to the chaos composed by evala’s sophisticated computer algorithm, which expressed by multi-channel speakers. That is to say, the complex sound installation shall consist of the metronome’s real- time sounds, which can be defined as a kind of live show at the site. “Anechoic Sphere” Sound Installation with an anechoic chamber Pieces All Sound Composition, Recording, 3D Sound Programming by evala Our Muse (2017) Composed with various sounds recorded at Evala’s private room, as well as a holy place in Taketomi-island of Okinawa. This title “Our Muse” related with his past piece "Our child's play" (2016). It was composed as a theme song for a TV program titled "Whether AI is our angel or devil?" This idea inspired Evala, and he created an orchestra song using the artificial voice. So he includes his concept for AI in this title, AI might be "our child" not only angel or devil for human beings. Then, he expects to hear a subtle whisper spilled out from a computer shortly. García Glenn Hinson Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer ABSTRACT WILL BOONE: Hearing Faith: Musical Practice and Spirit-filled Worship in a Contemporary African American Church (Under the direction of Jocelyn Neal) Hearing Faith offers an experience-centered exploration of musical practice among African American Spirit-filled Christians—a group of believers whose core religious identity centers on direct experiential knowledge of the Holy Spirit. The dissertation shows how these believers use music and dance not simply as media to communicate about religious belief, but as practices that help them negotiate existential challenges and complexities. In doing so, it brings a new perspective to the thriving and contentious scholarly dialogue about black churches, and demonstrates how the methodologies of ethnomusicology and existential anthropology can help build upon and expand the advances of this dialogue. Hearing Faith’s claims grow out of immersive ethnography with one independent African American congregation in Durham, North Carolina, and additional field research with African American Spirit-filled Christians in central North Carolina and Houston, Texas. Chapter 1 articulates the concept of a Spirit-filled imagination—a base of intellectual and embodied knowledge that both guides and grows out of the community’s practices, shaping what worshipers do and value.

I know that she still sees me dance, and I am sure that she is proud. iii ABSTRACT Dancing in Body and Spirit: Dance and Sacred Performance in Thirteenth-Century Beguine Texts Candidate’s Name: Jessica Van Oort Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2009 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Dr. Joellen Meglin This study examines dance and dance-like sacred performance in four texts by or about the thirteenth-century beguines Elisabeth of Spalbeek, Hadewijch, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Agnes Blannbekin. These women wrote about dance as a visionary experience of the joys of heaven or the relationship between God and the soul, and they also created physical performances of faith that, while not called dance by medieval authors, seem remarkably dance- like to a modern eye. The existence of these dance-like sacred performances calls into question the commonly-held belief that most medieval Christians denied their bodies in favor of their souls and considered dancing sinful. In contrast to official church prohibitions of dance I present an alternative viewpoint, that of religious Christian women who physically performed their faith. The research questions this study addresses include the following: what meanings did the concept of dance have for medieval Christians; how did both actual physical dances and the concept of dance relate to sacred performance; and which aspects of certain medieval dances and performances made them sacred to those who performed and those who observed? In a historical interplay of text and context, I thematically analyze four beguine texts and situate them within the larger tapestry of medieval dance and sacred performance.

SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher).” 2 Samuel 1:17, 18. THE translators have acted very properly in inserting the words, “the use of,” for that is what the passage means. But if you read it without those words, the sense is still the same— “He bade them teach the chil- dren of Judah the bow,” that is to say, how to use the bow. In modern times, critics have said that by the expression, “the bow,” is meant the song which David composed. And to sustain their notion, they quote from the Koran of Mahomet in which they tell us that there is a certain chapter called, “the Bow,” and, therefore, David called his song, “the bow,” as if so late an instance of oriental usage was at all to the point. I declare that there is nothing whatever in Scripture to justify the state- ment that the words, “the bow,” can be applied to David’s lament! No doubt, some of the Psalms have titles given to them, but there is never an instance of a Psalm being quoted by its title. It is quoted by its number, never by its name. I accept the passage as our learned transla- tors understood it—David bade them teach the children of Judah the bow.

    LARIMORE AND HIS BOYS BY F.D. Srygley I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. All of it is worthy of note, and I found myself as you will see here writing too much of it as a summary. It was too hard to narrow down so much detail. I still go back to it and read my favorite sections to receive encouragement along life’s way. Preface— Srygley’s reasons for writing about Larimore are colorfully given in the Preface. He begins with Larimore’s objections, Srygley’s insistence, and Larimore’s consent, and then convinces us to read it with the claim it is amusing, interesting, profitable, encouraging, motivating, and informative regarding the subject of missionary societies which was a hot topic in 1889. The sub-title to the book is Smiles and Tears which aptly describes the content and reaction of all those who would read it. T.B. Larimore was only 46 when the book began to be written. The book begins in Chapter 1, “T. B. Larimore is now in his forty-sixth year, and for more than twenty years he has labored extensively and successfully in the Southern States as a general evangelist. He probably baptized more people than any other man of his age now living, and possibly he has established more churches of Disciples in the South than any other man of any age, living or dead. Srygley inserts portions of letters from preachers, business men and distinguished Christian women who extol the virtue of Larimore with their personal insights of his talents and faithfulness.

Who exists, why, how and who started this cosmic play and what is its goal? – every intelligent man and woman must find out an answer to these age–long inquiries. Through the dark inferno, burning purgatory and pleasing paradise of this mounting Divina Commedia, a rhythmic heartbeat keeps time to a mystic song whose refrain is, “I am Aum”. Who is this ‘I’—that is the first person in us, and the baffling personality in the second and the third persons? That universal ‘I’ in the individual, is the Pilgrim Soul here. Fellow Pilgrims, pray walk with him as he talks with you. These are random footprints left on the sands of Time by the patient Pilgrim whose plodding steps met with grim trials in the ups and downs of human destiny. Hard was his lonely journey, long his search in the tangled woodlands of cosmic life and high was the aim of his inner aspiration guided and fulfilled by a Pure Almighty Grace–Light.

Twentieth century United States examples are drawn from early musical recordings from 1909, concerts from the 1930s, through dramatic literature and theaters including Broadway stages from the 1950s, to internationally popular film and music video renderings of gospel performance through the 1990s.
