Humffray St Mayor’s Message The Ballarat Heritage Weekend is on again and I am thrilled to invite you to join me at what will be a fun, vibrant and free weekend for people of all ages. History really does live in Ballarat all year round but it’s during the Mother’s Day weekend each year that Ballarat’s history and world-class heritage places come to life. This weekend we open the doors of many significant Ballarat heritage places allowing visitors the chance to peek inside and discover parts of our city that they may not have explored before. Something new this year is the set of fact sheets that has been developed for selected venues providing people with an opportunity to learn about the building’s architectural features and interesting stories. Together with open buildings, the Ballarat Heritage Weekend is packed full of heritage collections, demonstrations, free guided tours, talks, activities and of course great food. There really is something for everyone to enjoy. This year the Weekend focuses on the lessons and discoveries which shaped Ballarat and the world as we know it today. Education, inventors and inventions feature prominently in the Ballarat Heritage Weekend program. This year’s event highlights include displays and talks of two of ’s most distinguished sons; Henry Sutton, an outstanding intellect from Ballarat who once shared the world stage with inventor , and Pompey Elliott, a significant military leader in the First World War. It’s during this weekend, that you will have an opportunity to see three of Sutton’s original and possibly last remaining invention prototypes as well as listen to the stories behind Sutton’s inventions told by his Great Granddaughter. You’ll also be able to attend the official Ballarat Heritage Weekend launch ceremony where a beautiful bronzed Pompey Elliott statue will be unveiled in Ballarat’s main boulevard, Sturt Street. 9.40am View the Henry Sutton display and Computations display in the Ballarat Mining Exchange Call Room

10.20am Take a coffee break at one of Ballarat’s welcoming cafes

10.55am Wander over to the Bourke and Wills fountain, join the free 11am guided tour of Lydiard Street and let experts guide you to SMB Campus, at the South end of Lydiard Street

12.00pm Marvel at the shiny collection of vintage and classic cars before wandering into the Brewery Building to see heritage skills at work

12.30pm Why not grab lunch at the Ballaarat Club restaurant on Dana Street?

1.30pm Stroll a little further west along Dana Street to Dana Street Primary School and view the nostalgic classroom collection and schoolyard games activities

2.30pm Head up Doveton Street towards Sturt Street and turn right towards the Town Hall. On the way, take a minute to read your Town Hall venue fact sheet and note interesting features of the building as you walk upstairs. View Spinning and Weaving demonstrations and a unique collection of needlework

3.30pm Head back towards the Ballarat Mining Exchange and take a leisurely ride on the vintage bus

4.00pm To cap off your day, visit the Mechanics’ Institute Humffray Room to see the Vintage Pen collection and calligrapher at work. Why not wind up your fantastic day with an early dinner at one of Ballarat’s great restaurants?
