28-29 July 2007 Australian Champs Alice Springs http://nt.rogaine.asn.au MESSAGE FROM NSWRA PRESIDENT The big event of 2006 The World Rogaining Championships has come and gone. And what a great success it was! I think we delivered what we promised: a well-organised event, and a tough and uncompromising course in a spectacular setting.

First and foremost, on behalf of the Association, I’d like to thank the event coordinator Alan Mansfield, and thank his wife Sonia and family for their patience through all the time and effort Alan has put into the event.

Acknowledgments of all volunteers who helped with this event can be found in another article in this newsletter. I would also like to add my thanks to all volunteers who have helped run other events this year – by helping out with those you have ensured the continued smooth running of the organisation while many of us have been pre-occupied with the World Champs.

Alan has contributed an article in this newsletter on how the competition went and the key results – see inside.

By way of background This was the 7th world championships, and the 3rd to be held in Australia. The first was held in Victoria in 1992, around the town of Beechworth. There was a good mix of rural country and native bush in terrain varying from flat paddocks to steep mountain slopes. A network of tracks and roads, and on the day, a few flooding creeks. In 1996, the event was held in semi-desert country about 600km north of Perth. Quite a contrast. It was August and the everlasting daisies were at their most prolific.

Participants lining up to receive their maps

Since then, the championships have been held in Canada, New Zealand, Czech Republic and the USA. Returning to Australia this year, we were keen to offer a real bush event showcasing the best NSW has to offer. In the Warrumbungles, we found an area with few tracks, spectacular scenery, varied terrain and plenty of features for a challenging course. For those who weren’t there: The event ran from Friday noon to Saturday noon. On the Thursday evening, we kicked off with a welcome to country from Bill Robinson, a local elder and park ranger, and an introduction from the NPWS manager Mark Fosdick. This was followed by light entertainment over dinner provided by astronomer John Shobrook. Why? This was “The Stargazer’s Rogaine”, with Siding Spring Observatory as a prominent feature overlooking the course.

We had a great hash-house location. Plenty of space for 700+ competitors and volunteers, shade trees, marquees, a stage, admin office, even hot showers. Above us, sandstone cliffs on two sides, and the volcanic plug Belougery Split Rock to the south. Wildlife as promised, to distract overseas visitors – kangaroos, emus and koalas right there around the hash-house site.

I’ll leave you to read all about how the competition went elsewhere in this newsletter and on our website. We were using electronic punching, so all times at checkpoints were recorded and the time data and routes taken are available on the website. There are plenty of post-event comments there too.

We were a little unlucky with the weather, just catching the peak of the weather cycle. It went over the 30°C mark on both the Friday and Saturday afternoons – it was so much more pleasant just a few days earlier when we were hanging the flags. The heat added to the stress for what was already a physically challenging course. But the night was pleasantly cool.

After the finish, we encouraged competitors to stick around for festivities appropriate to a major event. Plenty of food of course, and those hot showers. The presentations were conducted by Neil Phillips of the International Rogaining Federation, along with IRF representatives from many of the countries present. Once the sun went down, more food, and entertainment from the band Didjeridu Dingo. A great sound, and so fitting to the environment and the occasion. A special thanks to Tony Garbellini, who not only achieved a respectable score in the rogaine with team- mate Ian Brown, but also played in the band afterwards!

An unpleasant surprise A close encounter with a reptile. Yes it has now happened – for the first time in a rogaine, a participant, Jason Poole, was bitten by a snake. This put one of the top teams, Jason and partner Adam Chase from the USA, out of the race after only 2 hours. Neither of them actually saw the snake, but they wisely pulled out of the event and sought medical attention. Thanks to our St John Ambulance crew, Jason was treated promptly, and taken to Dubbo Hospital. Here it was confirmed as a bite from a brown snake, and treated with anti-venom. Jason was wearing gaiters which prevented the snake from biting very effectively. After treatment, Jason was able to return to the HH site on Saturday afternoon. COMING EVENTS SOCIALGAINE – 19TH NOVEMBER 2006 – “THE AWABAKAL AMBLE”

The “Awabakal Amble" will be held on Sunday 19th November in the Newcastle / Lake Macquarie area. The Hash House is the Senior Citizens Hall at Dudley, a 100yr old plus place adjacent to two old pubs (from the coalmining days) and a soccer field.

Participants will have much opportunity to traverse bushland, coastal strips and pause at small shopping villages for a cool drink, or coffee and pastry! Part of the course includes the Great North Walk, a 250km walking trail that joins and Newcastle. Also included are rock platforms, cliff lines, ocean views, nature reserves with rainforest and banksias, old coal railway line and suburbia.

The NSW Junior Orienteering Squad will be doing the catering for this event.

Contact for this event is Rob Vincent (phone 4956 7018). 7th World Rogaining Championships Thank you to Volunteers, Landowners, Sponsors, Suppliers and Competitors

Competitors Congratulations on your performance whether it was in a place getting team or a personal achievement. For the participatory rogainer, the World Rogaining Championships remains a unique event where you competed on the same course on the same day as the competitive teams. It means though that you will face tough challenge as the course is set to test all of the capacities of the strongest rogainers. I hope you enjoyed the challenge.

“I think the use of the electronic punching was excellent, hope it catches on here. I look forward to the map analysis, photos and competitors anecdotes. Thanks to all the support crew, you have done a splendid job.” Craig Dermer, WA

A more detailed article about how we got here from September 2003 to October 2006 will follow in the next NSWRA Newsletter due in January 2007. Watch the web site and blog for further information.

Alan Mansfield Coordinator “Hello WRC7 organisers. Thanks for a well 7WRC 2006 organised and worthy world championship rogaine. The course was certainly diverse and the Warrumbungles are spectacular. I liked the fact that the course setter had selected strong features for the control sites. This gave confidence that even though the bush was tough, if you navigated correctly, you would hit the control without having to grid search. Regards” Ted van Geldermalsen 7th World Rogaining Championships – The Competition

Tom Landon Smith, Team AROC 2nd Mixed Open said on stepping up to the presentation stage smiled at Mike Hotchkis the course setter and said "you killed us Mike." I think Mike and the mapping/course setting team will take that as compliment from a very accomplished adventure racer, rogainer and athlete.

When we started on this project one of the outcomes we hoped for was a competitive event with many countries entered. When we saw the provisional results we were very please to see 7 countries represented in the first twenty places and along with 1st,2nd and 3rd of the Men Open and Mixed Open (including 1st in the Veteran Mixed) plus 1st in Women Open, and 1st and 2nd in the Men Veteran. Comparisons with past WRC’s maybe be hard however we are pleased with the out come.

As more teams load their map analysis information and with the first 50 teams Navlight data now available it is clear that the course setting team set a puzzle with many answers. Factor in the apparent rate of climb required, the vegetation, the heat and the result was that teams had to be adaptable with their route selection from the moment they started. The likelihood of 30 to 35 degree's C air temperature in October was 1 in 10. As I understand it was 37 in Sydney on the Saturday which could have easily equated to a 40 degree day in the Warrumbungles.

Out right 8th, 9th and 10th place tell an interesting tale of the variety of route choices to be selected. 8th place choose a route like a three pointed star with the Hash House at the centre. 9th place went south east then east then north east in a counter clockwise direction whilst 10th place went clockwise to the north then east and then south east. The result as you can see is the same points and 1minute and 6 seconds between 8th and 10th place. All three teams contain rogainers, orienteers, multisporters and runners of considerable experience and skill who came up with different solutions to route choice.

PS: Rogainers only go rogaining so that they can indulge in a good autopsy!

“It is the measure of an organisation to be able to handle contingencies without notice. You two, and you team did this impeccably well. I expected that joining the competition at such a late stage would have difficult and onerous. But it was all handled with a minimum of fuss!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, seriously. It was a long term goal for me to compete at a world level in the sport that I love. Best regards” Richard Arney VOLUNTEERS FOR UPCOMING NSWRA ROGAINES A glance at the table below will show that many of the key positions in coming events have already been filled. We need to all thank these people for their commitment. The biggest gap is surprisingly the Metrogaine. For many of you this is the one event where as the course setter you can choose an area that starts at your front gate. Being a short social daylight event in a suburban area, the demands on the other positions are a lot less than the bush events. Please give it some thought. The World Rogaining Championships has of course an exceptionally long list of volunteers. Only the key positions are shown below. For a full list please visit the association website “www,nswrogaining.org” and click on the “Current Vacancies” hot link. This is the place to always go for the latest information on all events. Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross country navigation, in which teams of two to five people visit as many checkpoints as they wish in a set time period. The traditional rogaine is 24 hours in duration, however, there are shorter events of 6, 8 and 12 hours. Most New South Wales events are held within two to three hours travelling time of Sydney. Most rogaines are on foot and held in attractive bush and farmland locations, however, some events are held in metropolitan areas (Metrogaines) or on bikes (Cyclegaines). Rogaining is a challenging adventure sport and is a lot of fun. WHO IS IT FOR? Rogaining is a team activity for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Everyone from elite athletes to families with young children can enjoy rogaining. New rogainers are always welcome and assistance is always available from organisers to help get novices started.

The parts of the course you visit are entirely up to you and your team members. There are no set routes and you don’t have to spend the whole time on the course. You can return to the “Hash House” at any time for hot food and a rest around the campfire, or a sleep, before heading out again.

Some competitive teams may cover 50 kilometres in a 12 hour event and even more in an event of 24 hours duration. However, the distance you travel is entirely up to you. The satisfaction comes in finding your way around the course according to the route that you have chosen, and navigating back to the finish within the time limit. WHAT DO YOU NEED? Rogaining is good value for money. All you need is basic bushwalking gear including a compass, whistle, pencil, water bottle, comfortable and warm clothes and shoes, a waterproof jacket and a basic team first aid kit. On 12 and 24 hour events you may also wish to bring along camping gear and spend overnight at the Hash House. WHAT DOES IT COST? In New South Wales the entry fees vary from $30 to $70 depending on the event. This covers hot food during the event, your map, information sheets and facilities at the hash house. Family teams need only pay two adult entry fees.
