Introduction The bilateral project entitled “Bilateral Ethiopian Netherlands Effort for Food, Income and Trade Partnership (BENEFIT Partnership) supported by the Dutch Government through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) has, since 2016, been implementing four agricultural development programmes (ISSD – Integrated Seed Sector Development, CASCAPE - Capacity building for Scaling up of evidence based Practices in agricultural production in Ethiopia, ENTAG - Ethiopia-Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth and SBN – Sesame Business network). In 2018 a fifth programme, REALISE - Realising Sustainable Agricultural Livelihood Security in Ethiopia, joined the BENEFIT partnership. The Partnership aims at increasing food and nutrition security, brokering Dutch expertise, and stimulating trade. In 2020, as a year of no-cost extension for ISSD, CASCAPE, ENTAG and SBN and full implementation year for REALISE, there were less field activities but more targeting of communication and direct engagement with policy makers and other stakeholders to ensure embedding the diverse demonstrated evidences by the five BENEFIT programmes. REALISE has continued the full implementation of planned activities at field level to demonstrate evidences. In addition, the planned activities had to be re-adjusted because of COVID-19 pandemic. The engagement and field level activities have been implements together with MoA and other partners at federal level and with regional partners (Universities – Addis Ababa, Arba Minch, Arsi, Bahir Dar, Haramaya, Hawassa, Jimma, Mekelle, Oda Bultum, and Woldia, Regional Agricultural Research Institutes in Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Region and Tigray, and the Oromia Seed Enterprise). Evidence mainstreaming and engagement related activities to ensure embedment and institutionalization were performed, as it was in previous year, through mainly four channels: (i) regular engagement with Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) through the monthly meetings with the state minsters, (ii) active engagement in the different technical committees and taskforces of the Rural Economic Development & Food Security committee (RED&FS), (iii) active utilization of opportunities that emerge from invitations to events and policy dialogues, and to be a member in different committees and taskforces in recognition of BENEFIT staff expertise and demonstrated evidences at ground level, and (iv) the engagement and communication of evidences by the BENEFIT seconded experts within the MoA through their day-to-day engagement. The 2020 annual report presents the major achievements under each of the BENEFIT outcome indicators followed by the major challenges faced, opportunities, key lessons learnt and the way forward. 2. Major achievements in 2020 The major achievements of the BENEFIT partnership are summarized based on the result chain outputs (Figure 1), which are related with (i) enhancing portfolio collaboration among BENEFIT programmes, (ii) increasing quality and quantity of agricultural production, (iii) improving markets and trade, (iv) improving the enabling environment for the agricultural sector, and (v) enhancing partnership for synergy. Results: The overall average cumulative annual malaria incidence during the study period was 30 per 100 popula- tions at risk. The highest proportion (29.2%) was observed from June 2015 to October 2016. In temporal analysis of clusters, the epidemic was observed from 2015/7/1 to 2016/12/31 throughout the study period in all districts. Hot- spot areas with high clusters (p < 0.001) were observed in Metema district it accounts 18.6% of the total malaria cases. An area of high median predicted incidence proportion (> 50%) was seen in the southwest part of the region. Most of the northern part of the study area was predicted to have a low median incidence proportion (< 10%). The region borders Tigray in the North, Afar in the East, Oromiya in the South, Benishangul-Gumiz in the Southwest and the country of Sudan to the west [1]. Amhara is divided into 11 zones, and 140 Weredas (see map at the bottom of this page). There are about 3429 kebeles (the smallest administrative units) [1]. "Decision-making power has recently been decentralized to Weredas and thus the Weredas are responsible for all development activities in their areas." The 11 administrative zones are: North Gonder, South Gonder, West Gojjam, East Gojjam, Awie, Wag Hemra, North Wollo, South Wollo, Oromia, North Shewa and Bahir Dar City special zone. [1] The historic Amhara Region contains much of the highland plateaus above 1500 meters with rugged formations, gorges and valleys, and millions of settlements for Amhara villages surrounded by subsistence farms and grazing fields. In this Region are located, the world- renowned Nile River and its source, Lake Tana, as well as historic sites including Gonder, and Lalibela. Bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas campestris PV. sesami is the most common and inflicts heavy qualitative and quantitative losses. The objectives of the present study were to assess bacterial blight incidence, severity and its association with agronomic practices in north Gondar Ethiopia. A Field survey was conducted in Metema and Mirab Armachiho in 2014 cropping season at flowering and fruiting growth stages. A total of 80 fields were assessed for the disease assessment from both large and small-scale farmers. Data on prevalence, incidence, severity and, management practices have been recorded. All surveyed fields were infected both at flowering and fruiting stage of the crop. Mean incidence over the two districts varied from 78% at Metema to 96.5% at Mirab Armachiho. The minimum mean severity (6.1%) has been recorded in Metema district and, the highest mean severity (76.9%) has been recorded at Mirab Armachiho.
