With over half of the world’s population now living in cities and more than three quarters of West Australian’s living urban areas, individual and collective quality of life is now more likely to be defined by the urban experience. • Is it a welcoming place where residents feel engaged? • Is it safe? • Attractive? • Can people readily connect to other people, places and activities? • Can they find jobs which are creative and satisfy? • What and where will the jobs of the future be, how will we move between places and spaces, where and when will we ‘play’? • Are public spaces alive with activity? • Does the urban form, transportation system and programs and services contribute to quality of life • Do the city’s people services — its parks and recreation centres, police and fire services, arts and cultural events — meet the diverse needs of its citizens? Our vision of tomorrow, is what we will drive our plans of today, in order to achieve our imagined shared futures. We need to look at our future from the viewpoint of our aspirations for how we live, then drive the policies and choices directing how we will grow, how we nurture our economy to create jobs, and protect our environment to ensure we have places to play and the resources to sustain us. New issues, challenges, trends and opportunities will emerge throughout the life of any strategy and planners need to be flexible and responsive to these evolutions of circumstance.
