With over half of the world’s population now living in cities and more than three quarters of West Australian’s living urban areas, individual and collective quality of life is now more likely to be defined by the urban experience. • Is it a welcoming place where residents feel engaged? • Is it safe? • Attractive? • Can people readily connect to other people, places and activities? • Can they find jobs which are creative and satisfy? • What and where will the jobs of the future be, how will we move between places and spaces, where and when will we ‘play’? • Are public spaces alive with activity? • Does the urban form, transportation system and programs and services contribute to quality of life • Do the city’s people services — its parks and recreation centres, police and fire services, arts and cultural events — meet the diverse needs of its citizens? Our vision of tomorrow, is what we will drive our plans of today, in order to achieve our imagined shared futures. We need to look at our future from the viewpoint of our aspirations for how we live, then drive the policies and choices directing how we will grow, how we nurture our economy to create jobs, and protect our environment to ensure we have places to play and the resources to sustain us. New issues, challenges, trends and opportunities will emerge throughout the life of any strategy and planners need to be flexible and responsive to these evolutions of circumstance. CREATING LIVING LABORATORIES FOR NEXT GENERATION CITY BUILDING Cities across the world are grappling with urbanisation challenges, from housing affordability, job creation, and energy and water security, to food access and ecological degradation. The urgency to revitalise, repurpose and recycle our cities and rebuild basic infrastructure presents an opportunity to rethink urban development. The neighborhood provides an important scale to spur innovation and test and replicate strategies that can lead to transformational changes toward making our communities more sustainable. By working at this scale the challenge becomes more manageable, and technologies and practices can be advanced to impact citywide policymaking and investments. Adam’s presentation will take delegates on a tour of North America, sharing the creative ways that urban redevelopment projects are applying a next generation approach to city building, using the EcoDistricts Protocol as a framework for aligning stakeholder and investment interests, unleashing innovation and reimaging public policy making.

We aim to do this through regional development, urban city revitalisation and strategic infrastructure development. We look to the future and learn from the past and the long-term interests of the community a priority. Important in our planning is the need to create diverse and affordable housing options for a changing Western Australian population. Much of our work involves land rejuvenation and reclamation projects to optimise existing infrastructure, breathe new life into urban areas and provide an exciting mix of lifestyle and business opportunities. Work on traditional housing estates is focussed upon supplementing the supply of land for the private sector through development partnerships. It ranges from the creation of new suburbs to delivery of new regional cities and town centres. Important for our State is the supply of well-connected and strategically located commercial and industrial land. Our industrial program drives the development of many industrial estates right across WA to support and accommodate Western Australia’s economic and employment growth.
