5th Mongolian National Jamboree Theme: Go see Naadam When: July 2 (Wednesday)- 8th (Tuesday) 2014 Where: Scout Adventure camp. About 65 kilometers north-west from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia Who: The Jamboree is open to Scouts aged 12-17 years old, male and female who are registered as member of their National Scout Organization. Members of WAGGGS are welcome as long as they join with contingent. There are about 1200 boys and girls expected to attend Jamboree, including 1000 Mongolian scouts and scout leaders as well as 200 overseas participants. Program highlights: The Mongolian 5th Jamboree program highlights are a chance to Mongolian and overseas participants to exchange their experiences and to let scouts learn about Mongolian culture and history and specially given and showing understanding of Naadam Festival. Naadam (Mongolian: Наадам, lit. "games") is a traditional type of festival in Mongolia. The festival is also locally termed "eriin gurvan naadam" (эрийн гурван наадам) "the three games of men". The games are Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery and are held throughout the country during the midsummer holidays. Women have started participating in the archery and girls in the horse-racing games, but not in Mongolian wrestling. In 2010, Naadam was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. There will be various kinds of interesting activities organized every day. We would like to give everyone as much opportunitly as possible to meet people from other cultures and from the local community, as well as to enable them to participate in interesting and stimulating activities. Mongolian Traditional Center: In this center you will have an opportunity to play traditional games and introduce with nomadic life. Traditional games such as ankle bone, archery and putting up a Mongolian ger, riding a horse and two-hump camel, and etc. Mini-Naadam Festival: Overseas participants will have a chance to take part in the traditional manly sports such as Wrestling, Archery and Horse racing. “International day” Performance: The important event of the “International Day” is the art performance. All participants are encouraged to prepare the performance, which includes traditional songs, dancing, games and so on. If you have hobby, or a collection, that may be interest to others, please bring it. The Global Development Village allows participants to become active members of the global community through various exhibits, games, arts and audio–visual displays, discussions, and presentations. The goal of the Global Development Village is to discuss and make decisions about problems they have, for example HIV/AIDS, adolescent’s reproductive health, environment, how to prevent from infectious diseases and also how to solve those problems by themselves. Scouts from different countries will discuss about their own problems. Other programs: Pioneering, craft workshops sightseeing, disco, art and sports activities, hiking around resort area, mountain trail encircling the jamboree, physical activities and skills center, friendship festival/international day for exchanging cultural and traditional information by each countries, exhibitions of main activities of scouting, orienteering, etc. Personal equipment: Usually personal kits including tent, sleeping bag, and rain wear, camping gear and eating utensils, and other personal items are the responsibilities of each participants. You will need summer clothes, but due to the variability of the weather you should bring some warm clothing as precaution. Food: Food will be serving to each troop. Meat is found in all Mongolian meals, usually with noodles, rice and soup. Please let us know if any members of your contingent are vegetarians or have dietary requirements at your registration. Payment: The fee for participant is US$ 200, which covers food, souvenirs, inland transportation and insurance. Overseas contingents are encouraged to pay the Jamboree fee to the Scout Association of Mongolia not later then 28 April 2014. Interested and qualified Scout Leaders are welcome to be part of the IST. A registration fee of US $180 shall be charged each member to cover the cost of meals, souvenir items and other issuances, and transportation from the airport to camp and back. Traveling to Mongolia: You will arrive in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia by direct flight from Istanbul (Turkey), Berlin (Germany), Moscow (Russia), Seoul (Korea), Osaka and Tokyo (Japan), Hong Kong and Beijing (China) and train from Moscow (Trans Siberian Train) and Beijing. Weather: Mongolia is a land of temperature extremes. The Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar has an annual average temperature - day and night, summer and winter - of just -0.5°C (31°F). The average annual temperature in Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar, ranges from -16°C (-2°F) in February to a more comfortable 16°C (62°F) in July. During the short spring transition in Ulaanbaatar, the average temperature climbs from 8°C (48°F) in May to only 14°C (58°F) in June. Summer fades quickly, and by September the annual average temperature drops to 8°C (48°F) Visa: All participants should obtain an entry visa before traveling to Mongolia from the Mongolian Embassy or Consulate in most capital cities. Visas may also be obtained upon arrival at the Mongolian border or internetional airport. The Scout Association of Mongolia will provide invitation letter.
