(November 2011) Martial arts are extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war.[1] Some martial arts are considered 'traditional' and tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association. It was revealed that the main criterion determining the success of combat sambo wrestlers in the competitive activity will be the level of their special training. Moreover, this training includes special endurance of athletes, active dynamics of competitive contests and the speed of recovery of fighters after intense training and competitive loads. Besides, to increase the level of special endurance combat sambo wrestlers significantly it was suggested to include in the training process of combat athletes the method of intensive functional training - crossfit. In a year of studies the tests on the evaluation of the level of recovery of combat athletes after a specific load showed that the athletes using the training method - crossfit in their training sessions demonstrated significantly (P <0.05) the best recovery time after the load than the wrestlers who did not use this technique.

  • Wrestling Injuries
SPORTS TIP WRESTLING INJURIES restling, one of the world’s oldest sports, is offered at various levels of competition, including the Olympics, the American Athletic Union, the U.S. W Wrestling Federation, and high school and college-sponsored tournaments. It’s a sport for all sizes of people, and both male and female participants compete, even at the Olympic level. Competition rules require that athletes be paired against each other according to their weight class. Some competitions require that contestants be matched by age, experience, and/or gender. This not only allows more people to participate, but also decreases the risk for injury. Nevertheless, injuries do occur, particularly in the knee, shoulder, skin, and head. What are the most common wrestling injuries? The injuries include concussions, scrapes, bruises, tongue cuts, and cauliflower ear. However, knee and shoulder injuries occur with more severity than all other injuries and are responsible for the most lost time, surgeries, and treatments. Head and Face Cauliflower ears are caused by severe bruising of the ear structure. The resulting injury may need to be drained and the ear wrapped in a casting material to retain ear shape once the swelling has subsided. Although difficult to avoid, wearing headgear is the best defense against this potentially disfiguring injury. Wearing headgear with a frontal pad can also minimize the impact of the forehead and help prevent concussions. In addition to preventing severe tongue and tooth injury, a mouthguard can help prevent concussion, as well. Prepatella Bursitis Prepatella bursitis is the inflammation of the sac (bursa) located in front of the kneecap (patella).

  • Arslan Wrestling Tour
If interested, please contact CD Johnson: [email protected] Arslan Wrestling Tour For thousands of years, wrestling has been a traditional sport in Mongolia. The traditional form of Mongolian wrestling dates back to the Hunnu Empire (1-7 AD). Wrestling is one of the country's “Three Manly Skills,” the other two being archery and horseback riding. Often, the military of Genghis Khan would use wrestling as a means to stay in shape, as well as be prepared for close combat. Genghis Khan and later Khans enjoyed the sport and it was incorporated into local festivals, also known as “Naadam festival”. Mongolia holds many smaller local Naadams throughout the summer, as well as a large national Naadam festival held in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. The festival includes horse racing, archery, and wrestling competitions to test the Three Manly Skills. During the national Naadam, usually between 512 or 1024 wrestlers competes in the National Stadium. The largest wrestling competition of Mongolia was held in 2011 and the event currently holds the Guinness Record for the largest wrestling competition. In the summer of 2013, I left the US to pursue an international teaching job in Mongolia. The country's passion for the sport of wrestling was a major deciding factor for me to make the move. Having competed, as well as been a coach at a few high schools and numerous wrestling camps, wrestling has been a large part of my life for a very long time. Some of the wrestling highlights since I’ve been here include training with NCAA champions originally from Mongolia, getting invited to compete in a international tournament in Russia, learning about Mongolian traditional wrestling and meeting traditional national champions, as well as wrestling in the Freestyle Mongolian Open.

  • Burmese Days
BURMESE DAYS By GEORGE ORWELL “This desert inaccessible Under the shade of melancholy boughs” —As You Like It 1 U Po Kyin, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Kyauktada, in Upper Burma, was sitting in his veranda. It was only half past eight, but the month was April, and there was a closeness in the air, a threat of the long, stifling midday hours. Occasional faint breaths of wind, seeming cool by contrast, stirred the newly drenched orchids that hung from the eaves. Beyond the orchids one could see the dusty, curved trunk of a palm tree, and then the blazing ultramarine sky. Up in the zenith, so high that it dazzled one to look at them, a few vultures circled without the quiver of a wing. Unblinking, rather like a great porcelain idol, U Po Kyin gazed out into the fierce sunlight. He was a man of fifty, so fat that for years he had not risen from his chair without help, and yet shapely and even beautiful in his grossness; for the Burmese do not sag and bulge like white men, but grow fat symmetrically, like fruits swelling. His face was vast, yellow and quite unwrinkled, and his eyes were tawny. His feet — squat, high-arched feet with the toes all the same length — were bare, and so was his cropped head, and he wore one of those vivid Arakanese longyis with green and magenta checks which the Burmese wear on informal occasions. He was chewing betel from a lacquered box on the table, and thinking about his past life.
