Lama Mocogno, in the Heart of the Mountains
LAMA MOCOGNO, IN THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS Lama Mocogno is an italian municipality of 2683 citizens in the heart of the mountains of Province of Modena, in Emilia Romagna, in the middle of a land whose ancient name, Frignano, reminds of the presence of Ligures Friniates, a people of celtic descent, according to Dominique François Louis Roget de Belloguet and others historians and anthropologists. The main acheological remains of that time consist in ancient inscriptions on the megalythe called Ponte Ercole (Hercules Bridge) or Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge), a rock with a singular natural bridge shape in the woods near Lama Mocogno, whose extraordinary characteristics gave life to legends and tales. Scoltenna valley, photo taken from Lama Mocogno Lama Mocogno is at an altitude of 842 metres above sea level, on a ridge parting two valleys: Scoltenna valley and the river basin of Rossenna. The names of both rivers are etruscan, linked to the domination of that ancient people coming from Tuscany, before the roman conquer. Hercules’ Bridge (or Devil’s Bridge) Archeological excavations, made in last decades, permitted to find roman coins, ceramic fragments, bricks and tiles, mainly in Hercules Bridge area, next to Mount Apollo (Monte Apollo, or Poggio Pennone) and near the high plateau of “Piane di Mocogno”, at around 1200 meters above sea level, known in the past as “Piana delle Are” (Plateau of the Altars) allegedly in reason of the presence of pagan shrines. Piane di Mocogno, once a place for sheperds and horse-breeders, is now a well renowned cross-country skiing centre (Centro Federale FISI Lama Mocogno), dominated by Monte Cantiere (1617 meters). -

Introduction This paper presents the underlying concepts developed by the Institute of Geography of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) for a popularisation project of the geohe- ritage in the Tsanfleuron-Sanetsch area (Valais, Switzerland). Due to its wide scientific interest, the local geoheritage is of great value (Reynard, 2008). The article details the complementary links existing between the different parts of a geotourist project – databases, educational panels, educational material and geotourist map – developed for popularising the geoheritage value of the area. Each element of the project is briefly presented. Special focus is set on mapping questions: how cartographic design and information structure can be set in order to facilitate map’s use and comprehen- sion. In this way, the Tsanfleuron-Sanetsch map is presented as an applied example of the guiding principles proposed by Coratza and Regolini-Bissig (2009). 2. Geoheritage in the Tsanfleuron-Sanetsch area 2.1 Access and location The area of Tsanfleuron is part of Les Diablerets mountain massif (Fig. 1). “Eco-Tourism Programme” Put Together with the Help of a Group of Guides Specialised in Hiking Trips
Toscana Trekking is our new “Eco-tourism programme” put together with the help of a group of guides specialised in hiking trips. Under the auspices of Toscana Trekking, VEGA BLU VIAGGI proposes day excursions, hiking trips and nature and cultural packages with the services of fully-qualified, licensed hiking guides, members of AIGAE, the National association of hiking guides. Our eco-tourist activities are completely different from traditional tourist packages in that they are aimed at people who enjoy hiking and walks and who prefer to stay in simple and informal accommodation while still maintaining a guarantee of good quality. Each trip is distinguished by various levels of walking difficulty (which are clearly explained, with easier alternatives in the case of the harder routes). For each route uphill ascents and walking times are specified. All hiking routes are covered at a relaxed pace (except in unforeseen circumstances) and according to the walking pace of participants. The emphasis of the itineraries is to get to know the surrounding countryside and its history rather than the hiking itself. Walking therefore becomes the means which allows us to discover the human dimension of the places we visit, to establish continuous and valuable exchanges with their inhabitants, and to get to know and understand the nature of these communities in the light of their history and popular traditions. The guide will adopt the role of the islander or mountain dweller, farmer or sailor, be it from Elba, Siena, Pavia or Ponza, and will try to involve participants in his or her enthusiasm for the history and the environment, and in a respectful curiosity for the local inhabitants. -

Bundesamt für Umwelt BAFU Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss ETH Zurich Swiss Academy of Sciences SCNAT University of Fribourg University of Zurich Factsheet Date 26 November 2015 Data on glacier retreat in 2015 Despite the presence of substantial snow cover on the glaciers in the Swiss Alps as late as May, the hot summer weather in 2015 resulted in extreme glacier melt. Changes in the ice thickness of 21 Swiss glaciers were recorded for the 2014/15 hydrological year. The volume of snow on most glaciers in winter was measured in late April and the snow melt in summer was calculated in late September. The least dramatic fall was observed in the south Valais region where an average loss of ice thickness of around 70 cm was recorded (Findelen Glacier, Allalin Glacier). In contrast, the glaciers located between the Bernese Oberland and Valais were very severely affected with extreme average losses in thickness exceeding 250 cm being observed (Tsanfleuron Glacier, the Plaine Morte Glacier). For the majority of the surveyed glaciers, on both the northern and southern slopes of the Alps, the losses of ice thickness ranged between 100 and 200 cm. Smaller glaciers at lower altitudes were most severely affected by the heat wave as the protective layer of winter snow had already melted at an early stage. Around 10 cm of ice on the tongue of the Rhône Glacier melted every day in July. When extrapolated for all of the glaciers in Switzerland, the estimated volume of ice lost in the 2014/2105 hydrological year was 1,300 million cubic metres.
