If God seems at times to be slow in responding, it is because God is preparing a better gift. God will not deny us. We well know that the long-awaited gift is all the more precious for the delay in its being granted. ... Ask, seek, insist. Through this asking and seeking you will be better prepared to receive God's gift when it comes. God withholds what you are not yet ready for. God wants you to have a lively desire for God's greatest gifts. All of which is to say, pray always and do not lose heart. ~St. Augustine, Sermon 61, 6-7 December 20, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Advent 9:30 a.m ORDER OF WORSHIP GREETING .......................... Amen HEARING GOD’S WORD FOR OUR TIME AND PLACE SCRIPTURE READINGS FIRST LESSON: Psalm 91 1You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, 2will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” 3For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; 4he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, 6or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. 9Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, 10no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. 11For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 13You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. 14Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. 15When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. 16With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation. SECOND LESSON: Luke 2:22-38 22When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), 24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” 25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” 33And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” 36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. SERMON: Then Sings My Soul: "Nunc Dimittis" SILENT REFLECTION SONG OF RESPONSE What Child Is This? What Child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary. Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, the Cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail, the Word made flesh, the Babe, the Son of Mary. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh; come peasant, King, to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise the song on high, the Virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy, for Christ is born, the Babe, the Son of Mary. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER TIME AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. FOLLOWING THE WORD INTO THE WORLD Lord God, Now Let Your Servants Depart in Peace Lord God, now let your servants depart in peace; For our eyes have seen your saving grace. A light to the world and the light of life, seen in our Savior’s face. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
