Program Notes by Michael Moore A Feast of Carols Performed December 18, 2004 Fantasia on Christmas Carols Gaudete The Dream Isaiah Saw This evening's concert, A Feast of Carols, brings together traditional carols, heard both in familiar and modern arrangements, and a contemporary work, Pittsburgh composer Glenn Rudolph's popular The Dream Isaiah Saw. The name of Alice Parker (b. 1925) is synonymous with choral music in America. Conductor, educator and composer, she has written more than 400 works ranging from operas to song cycles, and in collaboration with the late Robert Shaw produced numerous settings of American folk songs, hymns and spirituals. Gaudete, Six Latin Christmas Hymns, was commissioned by Shaw for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and was premiered by them in 1973. Corde natus ex Parentis (Of the Father's love begotten) is the earliest piece in this set, written by Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348-ca 413). Prudentius was a Roman citizen born in Spain. He studied law and served as a judge for a number of years, before a religious awakening late in life inspired him to devote his remaining years to writing hymns. Like many of the pieces in this set, the hymn tune originally appeared in the Piae Cantiones (Devout Songs), a remarkable compilation of medieval Latin hymns published in Finland in 1582. Interestingly, the work was unknown in the English-speaking world until the mid-1800's, when an original edition was given to British hymnist James Mason Neale, who translated and published 12 Christmas carols in 1853. Neale's translations, along with compilations of traditional carols by Sir John Stainer, sparked something of a revival of interest in traditional Christmas music and provided many of the now-familiar carols and settings that are in use today.

A Service of Lessons AND Carols for Christmas Eve December 24, 2020 at Four O’ Clock in the Afternoon The Episcopal Church of the Messiah P.O. Box 248, Rhinebeck NY 12572 www.rhinebeck-episcopal.org A Note about this service Our service of Lessons and Carols finds its history within the Cathedral tradition of Anglican liturgy and church music. At Christmas Eve in 1880, the Bishop of the Diocese of Truro (England), the Rt. Rev. E.W. Benson, conducted a service he had composed of nine lessons and carols. The lessons were read by various officers of the Cathedral, ranking from lowest to highest, ending with a reading, not surprisingly, by the Bishop himself. This format was adapted in 1918 by the Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, Dr. Eric Milner- White. The Dean took the ‘Truro Lessons and Carols’, composed a Bidding Prayer (the same used this afternoon, with slight variation for custom and the times), and added it to the liturgy. This format has been sung in the College Chapel every year but one since the end of the First World War. In 1954, it received its first broadcast on English television, and since the 1960s has been broadcast every Christmas. It, along with the annual Christmas message from the Queen, has become a well-beloved tradition of the English people and of those living in the British Commonwealth. This service has also become a seasonal tradition in other parts of the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church being part of that Communion. Also found in an orchestral version, the four-part choral writing is not difficult and would work for a small choir. There is a soprano descant, requiring singers with a higher range, that could be omitted. Come Flood This Heart of Mine SATB D. Lantz,III Beckenhorst/BP1788 This anthem is for general worship with an alternate Advent text provided. The choral writing is simple, and the optional parts for violin and bass primarily double the accompaniment. Every Stone Shall Cry SATB W. Todd Boosey & Hawkes/48019573 This Advent anthem uses jazz-like effects, particularly syncopated rhythms. Some of the choral writing is unison but all vocal writing uses the same rhythmic patterns. The piano accompaniment is in the jazz style, and the composition is also available in a version using instruments. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence SATB G. Holst ECS/1.5019 This historic text from the 4th-century Liturgy of St. James is appropriate for Communion but is often used during Advent. The familiar 17th-century French carol, “Picardy”, provides the melody for this classic setting by Holst. A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS & CAROLS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2014 S T . P A U L ’ S E PISCOPAL C HURCH F AIRFIELD , C ONNECTICUT 2 ELCOME TO THIS SERVICE , which anticipates the great feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The liturgy of Lessons and Carols was first used in the chapel of WKing’s College, Cambridge, on Christmas Eve, 1918, with the candle-lit splendor of the chapel, the prayers and scripture readings, the great hymns and the soaring music of the choir and organ standing in eloquent contrast to the darkness of a cold winter night and the tragic shadows of the recently concluded Great War. The intervening years have seen the worldwide broadcast of this service become a much beloved Christmas tradition. As in 1918, we in our own day turn again to these sacred words and songs in a world troubled by war, natural disaster, violence, and economic uncertainty. Tonight’s service is offered in the spirit of that first service at King’s, as a light shining in the darkness; with fervent prayer for peace, goodwill and understanding among all people rising amidst the strains of glorious hymns and carols. Although much of the music at this service is sung by the choir, the congregation plays a central role. Please listen intently, pray and sing with your heart, mind, and voice, as indicated below. Again, welcome ! Of course, a major part of this service involves the joining together of everyone in making a joyful noise to the Lord. Should your child be further inspired to the making of extended joyful noise while others are trying to listen, we do ask that you escort your little one to the gathering area or outside for a brief moment or two until he or she becomes more contemplative.
