The Titanic’s “Unknown Child” 1912 Whenever the name of the ill-fated ship Titanic is mentioned it conjures up so many different feelings and thoughts - horror, disbelief, overwhelming sadness amongst them. Some families had to face even more heartache when it was announced officially that their relatives bodies had not been recovered. Many however even 100 years on can take hope from the story of the Goodwin family from Melksham and hope that one day DNA testing may find their loved ones and a name may be added to their memorial stone. The Goodwin family from Canon Square Melksham were accustomed to moving to pastures new to make new lives for themselves. The family had moved from their home in the South East to Wiltshire a few years prior to making the decision of starting a new life at Niagara Falls. The 1911 Census Return for the Goodwin Family The family, Frederick and Augusta Goodwin and their six children were to join Frederick’s brother Thomas who had secured Fred a job at the large power station nearby and had found them accommodation. Fred resigned his position at a Trowbridge printer where he was employed as a compositor. Fred booked 3rd class tickets for himself and family to sail from Southampton aboard the vessel “New York” but due to the miner’s strike the New York’s departure was held up and so the family were transferred to the R.M.S. Titanic, a cruel twist of fate. The family, Fred aged 42, Augusta 43, Lilian 16, Charles 14, William 11, Jessie 10, Harold 9 and toddler Sidney 2 (Sidney in fact was just 17 months old having been born on 9th September 1910), boarded The Titanic and set sail for New York on 10th April 1912 from Southampton. -

That is the truth. There is no way that we could have planned this trip on our own. Bob made us feel very comfortable as passengers, the sightseeing was amazing, the meals and lodgings were great. Bob’s knowledge of area history, his personal stories and insights and great sense of humor left never a dull moment. We had so much fun it should have been illegal. In short Sheri and I both say “Bob’s our Uncle” and would not hesitate to hire or recommend Blue Diamond Tours in the future. Day Zero – The Grand Arrival - July 4th 2012 The first leg of our flight was to depart Grande Prairie to Calgary at 7:00 am. The time shift from Chetwynd to Halifax is 4 hours and 3 hours from Grande Prairie. Our flight was delayed by about a ½ hour. That being said when we departed in Calgary the final boarding call for Halifax was being announced. No time to grab a bite or Pee – Just run. The flight to Halifax (4 ½ Hours) was mostly uneventful. Using a bathroom on a plane is slightly nicer than using an outhouse on the prairies – it smells better and lacks flies. -

April 2021 Saint Raphael Vatican II Transforms The Church by Joy Horvath he Second Vatican Council (Vatican II, 1962- T1965) has been compared to the Protestant Reformation in its scope and direction. What did it mean for the Catholic Church in America? In 1958, Pope Pius XII died. Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was elected Pope in 11 ballots, and chose the name John XXIII. At 76 years old, he was expected to be a “caretaker pope.” Less than one year later, in 1959, he surprised the Church and the world by calling a gathering of religious leaders to “open the windows and let in some fresh air.” Preparations began to convene 2860 bishops, thousands of sisters, auditors, laymen and laywomen, and non-Catholic observers at the Vatican. Opening ceremonies began in October, 1962; the group worked for three years, until 1965, and produced 16 documents. The results struck like a hurricane, with radical changes in the liturgy, religious life, and relations with other religions. Why did Pope John XXIII call the meeting? He had spent WWII in Turkey, was involved in Jewish Holocaust rescue, and supported the establishment of Israel in 1948. He also saw the societal changes breaking in the late 50’s and early 60’s—increasing secularism, shifting demographics of the Catholic Church, Communist governments, the Cold War, the Space Race. His intent was for the Church to reassess its role in this rapidly changing world. AAFFTTEERR TTHHEE BBAATTTTLLEE THEN NOW COMING SOON The Battles for Cassino encompassed one of the few truly international conflicts of the Second World War. A strategic town on the road to Rome, the fighting lasted four months and cost the lives of more than 14,000 men from eight nations. Between January and May 1944, forces from Britain, Canada, France, India, New Zealand, Poland and the United States, fought a resolute German army in a series of battles in which the advantage swung back and forth, from one side to the other. From fire-fights in the mountains to tank attacks in the valley; from river crossings to street fighting, the four battles of Cassino encompass a series of individual operations unique in the history of the Second World War. Authors Jeff Plowman and Perry Rowe have spent several years studying the conflict together and walking the battlefield to take the hundreds of comparison photographs which are the raison d’etre of all After the Battle publications. Photographs have been selected from archives and private collections around the world to present a balanced view, combined with maps, orders of battle, citations and detailed captions. The Cassino battles, epitomised by the controversial bombing of the monastery which towers menacingly over the battlefield, stand at the centre of the Italian campaign. Fr Thomas Byles of the Titanic The sinking of the ship RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912 has become a well-known event in world history and the subject of numerous books, films and even a Broadway musical. It was a tragic incident in which over 1,500 people lost their lives on the maiden voyage of a ship believed to be unsinkable. One of the passengers aboard the Titanic on that fateful voyage was an Edmundian: his name was Fr Thomas Byles. Family Roussel Davids Byles (who would adopt the name Thomas later) was born in Yorkshire on 26 February 1870, the eldest of seven children to Louisa Davids and Reverend Dr Alfred Holden Byles. He was named after his Huguenot ancestor François Roussel who arrived in England in 1684. Davids (ending in an 's') was Roussel's mother's maiden name. His father was a successful businessman and a Congregational minister, who was the first pastor of Headingley Hill Congregational Church, Leeds. One of Roussel’s uncles was Sir William Pollard Byles, a radical social reformer and Member of Parliament, and one of his sisters became a missionary in China. Here, between 1885 and 1889 he gained many prizes, particularly in mathematics, in which he won the chief honours for three years in succession. In 1889 he went to Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied mathematics, modern history Roussel Byles (left) at Rossall School and theology.
