Pastoral Introduction

The inauguration of a ’s new ministry is always a significant occasion in the life of our diocese. For the priest it is the opening of a fresh phase of work, while for the parishioners it is the beginning of the next chapter in the worship and life of the whole area. It is right, therefore, for the bishop to gather the priest and the people together for this service, along with colleagues and ecumenical representatives from all over the deanery, so that they may offer themselves afresh to God for the work of the Gospel, ask for his grace and strength in fulfilling his work and mission, and commit themselves to the task of shared ministry in Christ’s name.

Please stand to sing the opening hymn as the procession enters the church.

HYMN

1. Will you come and follow me 3. Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, Will you kiss the leper clean, will you let my name be known; and do such as this unseen; Will you let my life be grown And admit to what I mean in you and you in me? in you and you in me?

2. Will you leave yourself behind 4. Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare Will you use the faith you’ve found should your life attract or scare? to reshape the world around Will you let me answer prayer Through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? in you and you in me?

5. Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow John Bell & Graham Maule, in you and you in me. The Iona Community

Greeting

Bishop In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen Bishop Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. All And also with you. Please remain standing for the Bishop’s greeting.

Introduction Bishop Christ is head of the Church; he alone is the source of all Christian ministry. Through the ages it is Christ who has called men and women to lives of service. By the Holy Spirit all who believe and are baptised receive a ministry to proclaim Jesus as Saviour and Lord, and to love and serve the people among whom they live and work. In Christ we are to bring redemption, the reconcile and to make whole. After his resurrection and ascension Christ gave gifts abundantly to the Church. Some he made apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip God’s people for their work of ministry and to build up the body of Christ. We are to be salt for the earth; we are to be light to the world. Today we have come together in the presence of almighty God to inaugurate Lynn Money’s ministry in these parishes, and to ask God’s blessing upon her.

3 Collect Bishop As we stand in God’s presence to pray for Lynn, let us also give thanks for the clergy, readers, wardens and many others who give richly of their time and talents to sustain the worshipping life, pastoral ministry and mission of these parishes.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified, hear our prayer which we offer for Lynn and for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry each may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name. Through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Sirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Inauguration

Statement of Need Please be seated as the Lay Co-Chair of the Deanery Synod reads from the benefice statement of need, which assisted in the identification of the most suitable candidate for this incumbency, and in the discernment of who God is calling to serve in these parishes. The text is on page 11.

Presentation The new Rector turns to face the congregation, and an elected Parish Representative, Marina Clent (Caynham), speaks on behalf of the benefice. Representative Right Reverend Father in God, I confirm that the Parish Representatives have shared fully in the appointment process, and that we assent to the collation of Reverend Lynn Money. The new Rector turns back to face the Bishop Bishop Lynn, do you believe that God has called you to serve Christ in these parishes?

Rector I believe that God has called me to serve Christ here. Bishop Churchwardens and people of the Ashfords Benefice, I commend Lynn to you. Will you accept her ministry? People We will. Bishop Lynn, will you share your ministry with the people of this benefice; will you lead, encourage and collaborate with all God’s people in building up the Body of Christ?

Rector With God’s help, I will. Bishop People of the Ashfords Benefice, will you work together and share your ministry with Lynn, and support and encourage her in the leadership of your congregations? People We will. The Bishop addresses the Rural Dean and the Lay Co-Chair: Bishop Prebendary Ashley Buck and Mr. Henry Chance, as the principal officers of the Deanery Synod, will you do all in your power to establish Lynn in her new ministry in this deanery, and to support her in the years to come? Rural Dean We will gladly do so, the Lord being our helper. Lay Co-Chair Preface Bishop The is part of the one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the holy scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation.

4 Led by the Holy Spirit it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God, in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? Declaration of Assent Rector I, Lynn Money do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and set forth in the catholic creeds, and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.

Oath of Allegiance Holding a copy of the New Testament in her right hand, the Rector turns to face the congregation. Rector I, Lynn Money do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law; so help me God.

Oath of Canonical Obedience Still holding the New Testament, the Rector turns to face the Bishop.

Rector I, Lynn Money do swear that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Bishop of Hereford and his successors in all things lawful and honest; so help me God. The Rector signs the declaration and oaths, then returns to kneel before the Bishop.

Supplication Bishop The pastoral care of God’s people is a solemn trust and a great gift, so let us pray for Lynn as she comes to minister among you that, strengthened by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, she may be equipped for the work that lies ahead.

All kneel and pray in silence for God’s blessing upon the Rector’s new ministry. Remain kneeling and sing softly the following hymn.

1. O thou who camest from above, 3. Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire The pure celestial fire to impart, To work, and speak and think for thee; Kindle a flame of sacred love Still let me guard the holy fire, On the mean altar of my heart. And still stir up thy gift in me.

2. There let it for thy glory burn 4. Ready for all thy perfect will,

With inextinguishable blaze, My acts of faith and love repeat, And trembling to its source return Till death thy endless mercies seal, In humble prayer, and fervent praise. And make my sacrifice complete.

Words: Charles Wesley 1707-88 Tune: ‘Hereford’, Samuel Sebastian Wesley 1810-76

Please remain kneeling while the Bishop anoints the Rector with the oil of Chrism. Bishop Almighty God, anoint your servant Lynn with the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit, that in all things she may know your will and be motivated to obey it. Help her to be faithful to her ordination vows, and encourage her daily in the work and witness that you desire, through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Please be seated

5 The Collation

The Rector remains kneeling before the Bishop as he reads aloud the deed of collation.

Delivery of the Spiritualities The Bishop hands the deed of collation to the Rector. Bishop Lynn, receive this cure of souls, which is both mine and yours, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen The Bishop stands to bless the Rector. Bishop God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen Welcome Please stand as the Bishop invites the Rector to stand at his side. Bishop Brothers and sisters in Christ, I present to you Lynn, duly collated as your new Rector. All We welcome you, we welcome you. (Applause may follow)

Hymn During this hymn the Rector will be welcomed by representatives of the diocese, the deanery, the parishes and other local congregations, as well as representatives of the secular community.

1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, 2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have heard my people cry. I have borne my people’s pain. All who dwell in dark and sin I have wept for love of them. My hand will save. They turn away. I, who made the stars of night, I will break their hearts of stone, I will make their darkness bright. Give them hearts for love alone. Who will bear my light to them? I will speak my words to them. Whom shall I send? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will send the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide Till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. © 1981, Daniel L Schutte, Whom shall I send? New Dawn Music After the hymn, please be seated. The Liturgy of the Word

Sermon by the Bishop

6 Please stand. Hymn

1. One more step along the world I go, 3. As I travel through the bad and good, One more step along the world I go; Keep me travelling the way I should. From the old things to the new, Where I see no way to go, Keep me travelling along with you: You'll be telling me the way, I know. And it's from the old I travel to the new; Keep me travelling along with you. 4. Give me courage when the world is rough, Keep me loving though the world is tough; 2. Round the corners of the world I turn, Leap and sing in all I do, More and more about the world I learn; Keep me travelling along with you: All the new things that I see You'll be looking at along with me. 5. You are older than the world can be, You are younger than the life in me; Ever old and ever new, Keep me travelling along with you: Words: Sydney Carter

Please remain standing. The Induction

Issuing of the Mandate The Bishop turns to the Archdeacon. Bishop Archdeacon George, I have admitted Lynn to the cure of souls in these parishes. I now ask you to induct her, and to support and defend her in her ministry.

Delivery of the Temporalities All turn towards the church door as two of the Churchwardens, Ann Lansdell (Ashford Bowdler) and Ann Reid (Caynham) lead the Archdeacon and the Rector to the door, where the Archdeacon places the Rector’s hand on the key or the handle.

Archdeacon By the authority of our Right Reverend Father in God I, George Howe induct you, Lynn Money into the real and actual possession of the Rectory and the churches of this benefice. The Lord preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for ever more. Amen The Churchwardens lead the Archdeacon and the Rector back to the chancel.

Installation Please remain standing as four Churchwardens, Stephen Ashford (Caynham), Susannah Hall and Peter Stretton (Ashford Carbonel) and Merlin Unwin (Ludford) stand beside the Rector to demonstrate that she does not bear the weight of pastoral responsibility alone. Archdeacon As we stand in God’s presence, let us pray. Almighty God, the giver of all good gifts, in your divine providence you have appointed various ministries within your Church; pour out your grace upon all who are called to any office and ministry in Christ’s name, and especially upon Lynn as she takes up her new commission as Rector of these parishes. Fill Lynn and the whole people of God in this place with the fire of your love, and clothe them with holiness of life, that together they may faithfully serve you to your great glory and for the benefit of your holy Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The Churchwardens return to their places, and the Archdeacon places the Rector in her stall.

7 Archdeacon Lynn, as I place you in this stall, accept with joy your new commission to preach the living word of God, to administer the sacraments of eternal life, and to guard and strengthen the flock that has been committed to your charge. May God keep you in his care; may Christ empower you with his love, and may the Holy Spirit lead you in the ways of truth and peace, this day and for ever more. Amen
