Release No: 23/JAN 16-O/91/01/28

SPEECH BY MR ONG TENG CHEONG, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AT THE DINNER ORGANISED BY THE SINGAPORE MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION (SMA) IN HONOUROF THE PAHANGMENTERI BESAR AT THE ORIENTAL HOTEL (ORIENTAL BALLROOM) ON 28 JAN 1991 AT 8.00 PM

It is my pleasure to be with all of you here tonight. The visit of the Investment Mission led by the Honourable is another example of the growing contacts between Malaysians and Singaporeans. This visit adds an important dimension to Singapore-Pahang relations. It strengthens the broader and excellent relationship between Singapore and .

Malaysia has a dynamic and forward-looking leadership. The leaders recognise that increased economic cooperation between Singapore and Malaysian states has benefits for both sides. It is not a zero sum game. Constructive and mutually-beneficial relationship between Singapore and Johor is a good example of the fruits of cooperation and collaboration. Therefore Singapore would like to step up cooperation with other Malaysian states.

Singapore and Malaysia should use their shared history, interlinked economy and geographical proximity to meet the challenges ahead. Dramatic changes are taking place in the world. The stalled Uruguay Round of trade negotiations and the Gulf War are only making the already uncertain world more complex. How these momentous changes and events will affect our region is still unclear. We can support and complement each other, to meet these challenges and minimise any adverse effects. 2

The objective of growth triangle concept between Johor, the Riaus and Singapore is to capitalise on each other's strengths and advantages for mutual economic benefit. The growth triangle concept is to allow free market forces to spur growth and development. It is therefore note-worthy that this visit is organised by the private sector. The active role of the private sector in facilitating economic cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia is a positive development. Investments have to come from the private sector. This visit is a reflection of the private sector's confidence in the political will that exits on both sides of the causeway to increase economic cooperation for mutual benefit.

Investment is only one area of possible cooperation between Singapore and Pahang. Pahang undoubtedly has some of the best tourist spots in Malaysia, for example , Fraser's Hill and Taman Negara. Pahang also has beautiful beaches. Singapore and Pahang can certainly cooperate in tourism. I have also seen reports that Pahang is willing to supply water to Singapore.. This is another area of cooperation which can be explored. There is also potential for cooperation in other areas between and Singapore.

The decision by the Menteri Besar to personally lead the investment mission from Pahang shows that he and his colleagues are determined to attract investments to Pahang. It is a strong message to Singapore investors.

May I wish you all a pleasant and enjoyable Stay in Singapore, and I look forward to greater cooperation and interaction between Singapore and Pahang in the years ahead.
