Letter to Barry (TLS Sept. 29, 1977) thanks for reply; comments on lack of response from UConn archives; writing a piece on Karen Silkwood for Newsday; will review DMZ for Newsday; “PS Have you read Caputo’s Rumor of war? Fine book”. Letter to Barry (ALS Mar. 1, 1978) has interest from large publisher in an anthology of Vietnam fiction, verse and diaries from previously published sources; Newsday declined to review DMZ (they stay away from small presses); preparing a book for Doubleday on journalist Don Marquis. Copy of letter to Gustav Hasford (TL Aug. 28, 1977) with comments and suggestions on Short timers ms (2 leaves) _____________. (Athens, Greece) Postcard to Barry (Feb?, 1978) thanks for comments on The short timers (see Barry letter Aug. 28, 1977 above) and discusses publishing plans. Gives West L.A., CA return address. Ms note by Barry: “2/27/78 –sent note of luck”. _____________. (West L.A., CA) Letter to Barry (TLS Mar. 16, 1978) Thanks again for comments on Short timers; still would like comment from W.D. Ehrhart on his ms; ordered a copy of Demilitarized zones; his editor submitted Short timers to Joseph Papp for possible production as a play; comments on the film Coming home, his anticipation of Apocalypse now, and that “Dispatches by Mike Herr ... [is] the best book about the war so far.” Ms note by Barry “sent ms to Bill 3/23/78”. Copy of letter from Barry (TL Apr. 23, 1978) clarifying production of Winning hearts and minds as a play by his wife, Joseph Papp’s ruthless behavior, his split with Rottmann and Paquet and resignation from 1st Casualty Press. Copy of letter from Barry (TLS Dec. 10, 1980) in response attached. Weisenford, Janet. Miscellaneous forms and correspondence with East River Anthology concerning the listing of Demilitarized zones (1976), Winning hearts and minds (1977 reissue) and Peace is our profession (1980) in Bowker’s Books in print and other publications and the acquisition of ISBNs for these works. [ca. 30 items dated 1976-1981] Folder 1.3. Braum, D. Braum, David. (FL?) Letter to Barry (ALS Jan. 24, 1972) Sorry he didn’t make New Years party; he and Sheila plan to seek a divorce; encloses his memoir of a day in Vietnam: A day in a far away place (17 leaves). Letter to Barry (ALS Apr. 28, 1972) thanks for WHAM; encloses a series of “The Indians lore again”; “Maybe you can use it. Maybe you could straighten out A day in a far away place too”; thinking of writing about his first contact with the Montagnards, a story of a 20th century young man meeting a Stone Age man. Folder also contains fragment of an envelope with May 12, 1970 postage stamp and Tulsa, OK address for Braum, but ms note by Barry on the piece reads “Sent note on ‘Peace’ flyer 6/7/79”. Folder 1.4. DMZ art work Knowlton, George. (Kingston, RI) Three letters to Barry (Apr. 1976) offering to do illustrations for DMZ and providing samples of his work. Miscellaneous samples of promotional flyers for other publications and a mock-up and copies of a DMZ flyer soliciting submissions (ca. 15 items) Folder 1.5. DMZ bio. letters Form letters (dated Apr. 28, 1976) from East River Anthology (Perkasie, PA) to the various authors in the DMZ collection. The letters transmit final proofs of the author’s submissions, a release form setting forth the rights and privileges of both the author and East River Anthology, and a brief biographical information form with the author’s responses in manuscript (ca. 60 items) 4 JAN BARRY ARCHIVE INVENTORY Compiled by John K. McAskill Folder 1.6. DMZ correspondence (A-J) Abbott, Gregory L. (Salt Lake City, UT) Letter to Barry (ALS Dec. 1, 1975) with resume attached; thanks Barry for the letter and prospectus dated October; interested to hear what happened to 1st Casualty Press; glad his manuscript is in the UConn archive, but not happy someone else was paid for it; transmits an ms copy of his Vietnam novel [No one said it would be easy – cataloged separately for the Vietnam literature collection] which deals with “an individuals loss of ambition and sanity, [and] his self imprisonment for the part he played in the war...”; offers to provide art work for DMZ. Copy of letter from Barry (TL Dec 22, 1975) in response attached: “It is undoubtably beyond my present vocabulary to describe my reaction to reading your novel ms...”; offers to publish selections in DMZ and use some of Abbott’s art. Allen, Bert. (Clayton, MO) Letter to Barry (ALS Jan. 31, 1976) transmitting two poems for DMZ [not present] Anderson, Carl. (Troutdale, OR) Letter to Ehrhart (TLS Mar. 26, 1976) gives permission to use “Janus enemy” and contributes $5 for a copy of DMZ. Appleman, Phil. (Dept. of English, Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN) Letter to Ehrhart transmitting more poems and including his vita. Postcard to Ehrhart (Feb. 14, 1976) thanks for your letter and gives right to use “Waiting for the fire”. Atkin, Carol. (New York, NY) Letter to Barry and Ehrhart (TLS Jan. 29, 1976) transmits a poem [not present], is pleased with revival of the anthology and comments on demise of 1st Casualty Press: “I think you are being unfair in implicating Basil and Wayne for misconduct...” Larry Rottmann was responsible. Copy of letter from Barry (TL Jan. 31, 1976) in response attached giving details of the 1st Casualty Press financial irregularities and demise. Balaban, John. (College of Liberal Arts, Penn State Univ.) Letter to Barry (TLS Dec. 24, 1975) describing why he missed contributing to WHAM; encloses some previously published poems and some unpublished ones [not present] for DMZ.
