Resavoring Cannibal Holocaust As a Mockumentary
hobbs Back to Issue 7 "Eat it alive and swallow it whole!": Resavoring Cannibal Holocaust as a Mockumentary by Carolina Gabriela Jauregui ©2004 "The worst returns to laughter" Shakespeare, King Lear We all have an appetite for seeing, an appétit de l'oeuil as Lacan explains it: it is through our eyes that we ingest the Other, the world.1 And in this sense, what better way to introduce a film on anthropophagy, Ruggero Deodato's 1979 film, Cannibal Holocaust, than through the different ways it has been seen.2 It seems mankind has forever been obsessed with the need to understand the world through the eyes, with the need for visual evidence. From Thomas the Apostle, to Othello's "ocular proof," to our television "reality shows," as the saying goes: "Seeing is believing." We have redefined ourselves as Homo Videns: breathers, consumers, dependants, and creators of images. Truth, in our society, now hinges on the visual; it is mediated by images. Thus it is from the necessity for ocular proof that Cinéma Vérité, Direct Cinema, documentary filmmaking and the mockumentary or mock-documentary genre stem. It is within this tradition that the Italian production Cannibal Holocaust inserts itself, as a hybrid trans-genre film. To better understand this film, I will not only look at it as a traditional horror film, but also as a contemporary mockumentary satire that presents itself as "reality" and highlights the spectator’s eye/I’s primal appetite. In the manner of Peter Watkins' film Culloden, Deodato's film is intended to confuse the audience's -
Netflix and Changes in the Hollywood Film Industry 넷플릭스와 할리우드

It especially examines Netflix’s disregard for the theatrical release, as it is the most portentous issue that could reshape the film industry, and Hollywood’s opposition to it as revealed through the 2019 Academy Awards where the issue was brought into sharp relief. At the same time, this paper also questions whether theatrical distribution makes a film any more cinematic by examining how Hollywood film production has been largely concentrated on tentpoles and franchises, while Netflix has been producing diverse films often shunned by the studios. In this light, it concludes the changes wrought by Netflix, including its bypassing of the theatrical release, are not likely to be reversed. Trouble viewing this email? View in web browser › REAL ESTATE Some people collect stamps. Some, wealthier than I, collect vintage cars. Personally, I stick to fridge magnets from the 50 U.S. states. Ron Burkle has us all beat, it seems. The billionaire investor and Pittsburgh Penguins owner has a penchant for collecting high-end homes. “It’s a nondefensible number,” he says. You may remember Mr. Burkle grabbing headlines late last year after he bought Neverland Ranch for $22 million. But his real-estate portfolio extends far beyond Michael Jackson's ranch, and includes estates like Greenacres in Beverly Hills, a once "fake apartment" in New York, and a volcano-inspired home in Palm Springs. Mansion's Katherine Clarke takes us on a tour of some of Mr. Burkle's most notable properties right here. Ron Burkle recently completed a massive restoration of Bob Hope’s former Palm Springs home.MICHAL CZERWONKA FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Mr. Burkle's La Jolla home spans about 50,000 square feet. MICHAL CZERWONKA FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL We also visit Napa, where artist Gordon Huether built a minimalist home made of glass and aluminum. Mr. Huether, who constructed the property with his wife, Darcy Tunt, didn't "want to live in someone else's house," so he filled the 3,000-square-foot home on the banks of the Napa River with his own artwork. Mansion's Nancy Keates shows us around the place here. And finally, Mansion reporter Candace Taylor tells the tale of a real-estate agent who invited TikTok influencers to film inside her $5.299 million Santa Monica listing. -

Case #2020-11 IRB Netflix Studios
ALBUQUERQUE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION November 23, 2020 Industrial Revenue Bond Hearing IRB 20-1: Netflix Studios LLC Project Case Number: IRB2020-11 REQUEST: Approval of $500,000,000 in City Industrial Revenue Bonds to be issued in two series is requested. PROJECT SUMMARY: Netflix Studios is planning to increase and expand their presence in Albuquerque by purchasing an additional 170 acres of land and investing more than $500 million in capital and another $1 billion in production spending, in addition to the company’s commitment of $1 billion in production spend under the 2018 local economic development transaction, to develop a major film and television production campus in Mesa Del Sol’s Planned Community Development. Netflix, Inc. is an American technology and media services provider and production company headquartered in Los Gatos, California. Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. The company's primary business is its subscription-based streaming service which offers online streaming of a library of films and television series, including those produced in-house. Netflix purchased Albuquerque Studios in 2018, and has undertaken significant production expenditures of approximately $150 million over two years (prior to the Covid pandemic that has limited film and television production worldwide). In 2020, Netflix began a competitive site selection process to determine where to focus its future production investment for the next decade and beyond. Netflix has three primary production facilities in North America other than Albuquerque, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Vancouver, Canada. The company sought a location with good business resiliency (not subject to shutdowns due to weather or other natural disasters), and selected the site at Mesa Del Sol in Albuquerque, New Mexico. -

Page 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I cannot express enough gratitude to everyone who believed in me on this crazy and fantastic journey; everything you have done has molded me into the person I am today. To my family, who taught me to seek out my own purpose and pursue it wholeheartedly; without you, I would have never taken the chance and moved to England for my Masters. To my professors, who became my trusted resources and friends, your endless and caring teachings have supported me in more ways than I can put into words. To my friends who have never failed to make me smile, I am so lucky to have you in my life. Finally, a special thanks to David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Terri Irwin, Jane Goodall, Peter Gros, Jim Fowler, and so many others for making me fall in love with wildlife and spark a fire in my heart for their welfare. I grew up on wildlife films and television shows like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, March of the Penguins, Crocodile Hunter, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Shark Week, and others – it was because of those programs that I first fell in love with nature as a kid, and I’ve taken that passion with me, my whole life. -
Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).
