DEVELOPMENT EDITOR’S LETTER_ SUPER SMASH SHOWCASES I didn’t move to Tampa until 2010, so I just missed out on the city’s last Super Bowl hosting opportunity. From the stories I’ve been told, there’s nothing like having the Big Game DRONES swoop in and take over the city for a week or more. And something I learned while RING IN THE NEW YEAR working on this issue was that no region does it quite like Tampa Bay.

Every time our city has been awarded a Super Bowl, some extenuating circumstances BY CELEBRATING YOU ESPORTS have cast doubt on our ability to pull it off — from the possibility of a terrorist attack to a global financial crisis and, now, a pandemic. But in each instance, Tampa Bay has made VIDEO GAMES it happen with finesse, grace and style. Starting on page 64, read up on the area’s Super Bowl history and how this year’s host committee is planning for anything and everything to keep the festivities safe and successful.

One key piece of the Super Bowl LV Host Committee is Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Derrick Brooks, who is serving as the group’s co-chairman. I got the chance to sit down with Brooks for this issue’s InterView, during which we discussed his under-the-radar role with the , the lessons his parents imparted in him, and even how his COMPETITIONS teenage daughter roped him into dancing on TikTok.

Beginning in the mid-2010s, the long-awaited renaissance of Tampa Heights was finally taking

hold. For there to be a renaissance there has to have been an earlier decline, and to say that

Tampa Heights was once in decline would be putting it mildly. The neighborhood just north of

Downtown Tampa was the city’s first suburb, but it also became one of the city’s first economically

challenged areas. The rise, fall and rebirth of Tampa Heights is a story that includes an epidemic

with mysterious origins, a short-lived town government and grand residences, followed by long-

lasting economic decline and a slow path to recovery.

People are starting a new chapter in these 100-year-old homes,” he explains. “Homeowners are always finding old glass kitchen cabinet doors or an attic. They are paying more to have a restored home versus a renovated home because, as we’re spending more time in our living rooms, they want to talk about where this or that piece came from, or about the fireplace or the restored doorknobs. People like to have conversations about the history of their homes.”

Built in 2018, this Tampa Street three-bedroom is the perfect example of a new home built in the old Craftsman style. Its size is similar to that of an original Heights bungalow but with updated 21st-century granite counters, maple cabinets, and vaulted, airy ceilings. CUSTOM COMFORT “As people have been staying home and cooking [for themselves] more, they’ve begun asking for more high-end appliances,” says Timmerman. Those include fun additions like cappuccino makers and wine refrigerators. “They want more creature comforts in the kitchen, and they need a place to put them. Kitchen islands can be a great place to store appliances, or you can add a beverage drawer, which can free up space in your refrigerator. Ice makers can be built into cabinets.”

“You can customize drawers and cabinets for anything — like a spice rack or cutting board,” adds Drew, “You can even have a drawer with a hidden area to store items you don’t use often.”

03. A FAST BREAK TO SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY

While it was surprising enough to many that the Toronto Raptors would be playing in Tampa, it was perhaps more intriguing that they chose Saint Leo University — a fairly remote location, 45 minutes away from — to host their training camp. How did the 18,000-student Catholic university in Pasco County even come across the team’s radar?

As most things go, it’s all about who you know. Saint Leo’s men’s basketball coach, Lance Randall, is friends with Raptors assistant coach and had worked with Raptors many years ago in an English basketball league, explains Saint Leo’s athletic director, Fran Reidy. Once the team brought people to Tampa to begin exaloring potential training camp sites, Randall showed them around Saint Leo the week before Thanksgiving, and a deal was struck.

“A couple of things, I think, made us attractive,” Reidy says. “No. 1, we were willing to grant them exclusive rights to the building,” with athletics staff working from home, the basketball team using another campus facility and students already scheduled to learn virtually for the remainder of the semester, so the Raptors could maintain their COVID-19 protocols.

Picture the Super Bowl. Really, picture any sporting event you’d watch on TV. Now, imagine a food you might enjoy while watching said event. Odds are you’re envisioning a plate of wings.

Since their invention just 56 years ago at The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, chicken wings — more specifically, Buffalo wings — have become synonymous with the television sports viewing experience. Last year, the National Chicken Council estimated Americans would eat 1.4 billion chicken wings just on Super Bowl Sunday.

But our favorite football snack started out as mere kitchen scraps. In 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, the owner of The Anchor Bar in snowy Buffalo, fried up some chicken wings that usually went in the stock pot as a late-night bite for her son, Dominic, and his friends. To give them a kick, she created a secret spicy sauce to coat the wings. With that first batch, history was made. The Anchor Bar added these “Buffalo wings” to the menu, and the handheld bites began spreading to bars across the country.

The rise of the Buffalo wing coincided with the rise of the sports bar throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, as more watering holes began installing multiple TVs and subscribing to cable packages so patrons could spend hours drinking, eating and catching the games. Thus, wings became inextricably linked with sports. THE PRESS BOX PUTS BUFFALO WINGS ON THE MAP (IN TAMPA) BUFFALO PUTS THE PRESS BOX

AVAST YE! AVAST Another key date in Buffalo wing history is 1918, when Louisiana pepper farmer Adam Estillete and spice company owner Jacob Frank first created Frank’s RedHot sauce. The mix of cayenne peppers, garlic powder, salt and vinegar would go on to become the primary ingredient in the Bellissimo’s Buffalo sauce recipe. While the Anchor Bar still claims a number of “secret ingredients” in its sauce, the list of ingredients in the bottled version (available for purchase in a reasonable 12-ounce or eye-popping 1-gallon size) includes Frank’s and margarine, a typical component of Buffalo wing sauce.

FISHING IN THE WINTER 8 Winter greetings to our friends, new anglers and all those who are joining us for the latest edition

WITH CAPTAIN OLIVER O’RIORDAN WITH CAPTAIN of the Tampa Bay Fishing Report. We are currently experiencing winter fishing conditions, a season very different from the balmy spring and summer. FISHING REPORT Truthfully, winter is the most difficult of all Tampa Bay fishing seasons, as we are angling for tropical 9 18 fish in cold water. With the water temperatures dropping below 70 degrees, the fish tend to be a bit lethargic. So how do we fish successfully in these conditions? We need to slow down and be 11 more patient than we would be when fishing warmer waters. We find this to be very therapeutic 10 as well as productive. Because Tampa Bay is so alive and thrives with great sportfishing, our 19 expectations are usually more fast-action oriented. The winter time gives us the opportunity to 17 catch our breath and let our patience be rewarded.

The most important thing that one can incorporate into their winter fishing program is the 12 targeting of winter-friendly species. These would include sheepshead, Key West snapper (grunts), bonnethead sharks, and spotted or speckled sea trout. All of these species feed on live shrimp, so you can keep your bait the same for each of them. One aspect of fishing that remains consistent from warm to cold weather species is that the tackle does not change. We still target these fish with light tackle rods and reels, using a 10-to-15-pound line and 20-to-25-pound leader, 13 14 along with number one circle or J hooks. We fish both under a cork and on the bottom with a 16 15 number one split shot weight. Whichever gets the most action, we convert. Most of the time we find the split shot weight to be more effective because the fish are hunkered down on the bottom this fish has nicknames like snapper, West Commonly known as Key CAPTAIN OLI_ of the water seeking warmth. “Give them a fish, they eat The is full of activities, food and drinks, and cultural venues. MORPHEUS8 Used on the face or body, this one-of-a-kind treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency treatments will make people notice that you look better — but they won’t quite be able to put a finger on why. What makes Morpheus8® unique is that it combines these two technologies, making it one of the best modalities on the market to tighten and smooth the skin. The result is skin that looks healthy and supple. “This combo therapy is the next generation of skin care,” explains Lindsey Taylor, APRN-C, one of Faces of South Tampa’s elite nurse practitioners. Since debuting this procedure in late 2019, Faces has become the most renowned and prolific provider of Morpheus8 treatments in the Bay Area. Like the many other procedures offered at Faces, the results are undeniable and stunning.

COOLTONE “If you’re looking to give your workouts a boost, body contouring can give you a sleek, defined look without surgery,” says Taylor. CoolTone™ uses Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) technology to strengthen, firm and define your ab, buttock and/or thigh muscles. During each treatment, which typically lasts about 30 minutes, MMS delivers the energy necessary to stimulate approximately 25,000 muscle contractions, causing the muscles to respond to this intensity and begin to remodel and further develop the muscle tissue. This creates a muscle-tone appearance that you can’t get from sit-ups or squats alone.

BABY BOTOX The days of the frozen forehead are over!
