Laws and Jay Tummelson, for taking the time to come and share their knowledge with us. Since this is the 10th year of GameStorm, we thought it only appropriate that we celebrate! Information Please join us for an anniversary party (with cake!) in the Hospitality Suite on Friday evening at 8 PM. A lot of different threads have to be pulled together to make this weekend happen; GameStorm wouldn't exist happen without the efforts of the committee, staff members and volunteers. A number of key positions were taken over by new people, all of whom rose to their challenges admirably. Everyone's hard work is very much appreciated. There is one member of the committee I would like to mention specifically. Mark Santillo did an incredible job of making GameStorm attractive to dealers, publishers and others in the in- dustry. GameStorm would not be what it is without you. Thank you. Have a great weekend! Beverly T Block Chair, GameStorm 10 GameStorm Needs You ! Smoking is also not permitted within 25 feet of doors, windows and vents. (RCW 70.160.075) Weapons The wearing and carrying of weapons is permitted at GameStorm ONLY with prior writ- ten permission of the GameStorm Chair. Fake weapons (e.g. boffers) may be used only in des- ignated areas at designated times. Failure to comply is grounds for immediate expulsion from the convention. Any weapons purchased in the Dealers' Room must be securely wrapped: drawable weap- ons must be secured to prevent being drawn. Security Policy OSFCI and GameStorm staff assume no responsibility for the security of persons or prop- erty. Staff will attempt to resolve any problems which arise with convention attendees. In the event of a problem which cannot be resolved by staff, hotel or other personnel will be called to resolve the problem. Under no circumstances will staff engage in physical altercation with at- tendees, guests or uninvited personnel. All attendees are responsible for maintaining security for their own property. Personal property such as games, computer equipment and gaming paraphernalia is used at risk throughout the convention and GameStorm relies on the honesty and integrity of the conven- tion attendees to safeguard this property. In the event of any unusual or suspicious activity, convention attendees are requested to contact a staff member with their concern. Badges are to be worn and visible by convention attendees at all times. Until the end of the convention, badges remain the property of GameStorm. 4 GameStorm 10 How to Sign-up to Play a Game First, find out which room your event is in. Locate the room on the map in the middle of this book. Sign-up sheets for events taking place in the Centennial Center will be in the en- trance hallway. RPG, CCG and Minis events taking place in the lobby sign-up sheets will be located in the hallway between the Gull’s Nest and Quayside rooms. Other events will have their sign-up areas near the event location Information Second, find the sign-up sheet for your specific event. The sign-up sheets will be ordered by starting time, in order by table number. Third, put your badge number and name in the first empty slot. If a game you want to play is full, sign-up as an alternate. This gives you priority in case one of the initial players who signed up does not show. If you signed up online, your badge number and name should be listed at the top. Five to 10 minutes before the game starts, the Game Master who is running your event will take the sheet. Be ready to show him or her your badge to confirm your space. Many games fill up, so be sure to sign-up early! If you have any questions about the game sign-up system, go to the Office in Room 111 or the Game Library in the Centennial Center. www.GameStorm.org 5 How to Use the Game Library Information GameStorm has a huge stock of games available for you to check out and play. Not coinci- dentally, you are surrounded by other gamers on all sides. Come on down to the Game Li- brary and get in the game! The Game Library is located in the Centennial Center. You can view the shelves (from your side of the table, please) or read the alphabetical list of games available. When you have de- cided on a game, the helpful volunteer behind the table will verify your badge, stamp the li- brary card (and write in your badge number and the time) and give you the game. Then, find a table and play! Any table that does not have anything scheduled or is otherwise occupied is open gaming. Any scheduled event owns the table during its scheduled hours. When you are done, return the game to the Library. The helpful volunteer will mark the time and initial that you returned it. That's it! Just be sure you return it before the Library closes at 5 PM Sunday, or our Agents will come looking for you… Game Master Rewards This year's fabulous GM appreciation swag will once again be distributed using GameStorm Bucks, which you will receive when you turn your completed sign-up sheets to the Office. For the more desirable items, you will have to opportunity to put your name on a list of interested GMs and volunteers from which a recipient will be chosen at random. Please check in the Office in Room 111 for more details. About The Orange Cones GameStorm will again be using orange traffic cones this year to mark games that are start- ing that people can join and play. If you're looking for a Board Game or RPG to play, look for the cones. Any table with a cone on it has a game with room for more players. If you want to play a specific game, set up a cone on an open table and wait for players to find you! Please do not remove cones from the rooms or use them to mark boundaries, as decora- tions or as game components. Please be sure to return the cone or put it under the table when your game is full, or past the point where new players can join. 6 GameStorm 10 Office GameStorm Office is located in Room 111. • Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions
Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions Melissa J. Rogerson, Martin Gibbs, Wally Smith Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural User Interfaces The University of Melbourne Parkville, Vic, 3010 +61 3 8344 1394, +61 3 8344 1494 [email protected] , [email protected] , [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, we discuss the different ways in which modern European boardgames (“Eurogames”) are converted for digital play. We review digitised versions of three popular tabletop boardgames: Puerto Rico, Agricola and Ascension. Using these examples, we demonstrate the tension between the interaction metaphor of the original analogue medium and the metaphor of a digital game. We describe the importance of housekeeping chores to gameplay and position them as a form of articulation work, which is typically hidden by digital implementations. Further, we demonstrate the types of information that are created through digital play and discuss how this influences game play of both digital and physical boardgames. Keywords Board games, interaction metaphor, articulation, theorycrafting, informating INTRODUCTION Boardgames, traditionally played in their physical format using boards, cards, dice, playing tokens and the like, are increasingly being translated to digital form for devices such as smartphones, computers, videogame systems and tablets. To date, little attention has been paid to how and the degree to which this digitisation affects or transforms the experience of play. There is growing tension between the desire for digitised boardgames to be true to the interaction metaphor (Sharp et al. 2007, 58-63) of the original medium and the desire to extend the game to explore the potential of the digital medium.
