First, I'd like to thank our Guests of Honor, Robin D. Laws and Jay Tummelson, for taking the time to come and share their knowledge with us.

Since this is the 10th year of GameStorm, we thought it only appropriate that we celebrate! Information Please join us for an anniversary party (with cake!) in the Hospitality Suite on Friday evening at 8 PM.

A lot of different threads have to be pulled together to make this weekend happen; GameStorm wouldn't exist happen without the efforts of the committee, staff members and volunteers. A number of key positions were taken over by new people, all of whom rose to their challenges admirably. Everyone's hard work is very much appreciated.

There is one member of the committee I would like to mention specifically. Mark Santillo did an incredible job of making GameStorm attractive to dealers, publishers and others in the in- dustry. GameStorm would not be what it is without you. Thank you.

Have a great weekend! Beverly T Block Chair, GameStorm 10

Locate the room on the map in the middle of this book. Sign-up sheets for events taking place in the Centennial Center will be in the en- trance hallway. RPG, CCG and Minis events taking place in the lobby sign-up sheets will be located in the hallway between the Gull’s Nest and Quayside rooms. Other events will have their sign-up areas near the event location

Information Second, find the sign-up sheet for your specific event. The sign-up sheets will be ordered by starting time, in order by table number.

Third, put your badge number and name in the first empty slot. If a game you want to play is full, sign-up as an alternate. This gives you priority in case one of the initial players who signed up does not show. If you signed up online, your badge number and name should be listed at the top.

Five to 10 minutes before the game starts, the Game Master who is running your event will take the sheet. Be ready to show him or her your badge to confirm your space.

Many games fill up, so be sure to sign-up early! If you have any questions about the game sign-up system, go to the Office in Room 111 or the Game Library in the Centennial Center. www.GameStorm.org 5 How to Use the Game Library Information GameStorm has a huge stock of games available for you to check out and play. Not coinci- dentally, you are surrounded by other gamers on all sides. Come on down to the Game Li- brary and get in the game!

The Game Library is located in the Centennial Center. You can view the shelves (from your side of the table, please) or read the alphabetical list of games available. When you have de- cided on a game, the helpful volunteer behind the table will verify your badge, stamp the li- brary card (and write in your badge number and the time) and give you the game. Then, find a table and play!

Any table that does not have anything scheduled or is otherwise occupied is open gaming. Any scheduled event owns the table during its scheduled hours.

When you are done, return the game to the Library. The helpful volunteer will mark the time and initial that you returned it. That's it! Just be sure you return it before the Library closes at 5 PM Sunday, or our Agents will come looking for you…

Game Master Rewards This year's fabulous GM appreciation swag will once again be distributed using GameStorm Bucks, which you will receive when you turn your completed sign-up sheets to the Office. For the more desirable items, you will have to opportunity to put your name on a list of interested GMs and volunteers from which a recipient will be chosen at random.

Please check in the Office in Room 111 for more details.

About The Orange Cones GameStorm will again be using orange traffic cones this year to mark games that are start- ing that people can join and play.

If you're looking for a Board Game or RPG to play, look for the cones.

Any table with a cone on it has a game with room for more players.

If you want to play a specific game, set up a cone on an open table and wait for players to find you!

Please do not remove cones from the rooms or use them to mark boundaries, as decora- tions or as game components.

Please be sure to return the cone or put it under the table when your game is full, or past the point where new players can join. 6 GameStorm 10 Office GameStorm Office is located in Room 111.

Always ready to take an intriguing career detour, his other past projects include collectible card games,

People computer games and comic books.

Board Game Guest of Honor Jay Tummelson

Before entering the world of hobby game publishing, Jay ran a large mainframe data center for a financial company. Around 1979, in his mid-thirties, Jay discovered Dungeons & Dragons and became involved in the RPGA, claiming in a 1999 interview that he was their top-ranked Judge at that time. Partnering with some friends to buy the assets of the bankrupt Pacesetter Games, he came into contact with Darwin Brom- ley, then owner of Mayfair Games, which had acquired the rights to Pacesetter's Chill property.

In 1995, Jay began working for Mayfair Games, where he remained for two years. At that time, Mayfair had begun to import German-style board games for sale, with- out doing any localization. Tummelson first suggested that they incorporate an Eng- lish translation and then that they completely localize the game for American audi- ences. This led to Mayfair publishing its own versions of Detroit/Cleveland Grand Prix, Manhattan, Modern Art, Streetcar and Settlers of .

One part of the localization process was to create original art and components. Jay thought that a better solution would be to use the same artwork and components as the originals and to share the cost of printing, as well. In 1998, he founded to take that approach. Since then, Rio Grande Games has published over 250 games and has had a significant effect on board gaming in the United States, almost single-handedly creating the "Euro-Game" phenomenon. Some of its award-winning releases include Puerto Rico, Alhambra, Torres, Tikal, Carcassone, , Amun Re, Taj Mahal and Mississippi Queen. www.GameStorm.org 11 Special Guest of Honor Events Trail of Cthulhu Live Sunday 3 PM Quarter Deck Go horribly insane and get devoured by squamous, wriggling servitors of Cthulhu—all for a good cause!

Robin D. Laws presents Trail Of Cthulhu Live, an appallingly hilarious event, in which the game’s normal rules are tossed out the window. The only resolution system here is cold, hard cash.

Want to live? Donate generously! Want your buddy’s brain eaten by a Mi-Go? Donate evilly! On a budget? Bring friends to keep you alive—or make yourself too entertaining to die and throw yourself on the mercy of the audience. People

Proceeds go to the Susan Petrey Clarion Writers Scholarship and the Portland Schools Foundation.

Robin D. Laws Speaks Saturday 5 PM Poolside You listen as Guest of Honor Robin D. Laws will share stories and insights.

Rio Grand-A-Thon Friday 8 AM to Saturday 4 PM The GameStorm Rio-Grand-A-Thon is your chance to play many of the great games published by our Guest of Honor’s company, Rio Grand Games.

The competition runs from 8 AM on Friday through 4 PM on Saturday, with an awards ceremony at 5 PM Saturday.

It’s easy to participate: just go to the Rio Grand-A-Thon table in the front of the Centennial Center and sign-up, then play as many Rio Grand Games games as you want to. You'll get points for every game you play.

It's that simple!

Keynote Address by Jay Tummelson Saturday 2 PM Poolside Jay Tummelson, founder of Rio Grande Games, will deliver an insightful keynote on the future of hobby games that draws on his 10 years of experience bringing high-quality, Euro-style games to Ameri- can markets. Based on his background as a publisher of over 300 games through Rio Grande — from classics like Carcassone, Puerto Rico, Lost Cites and Power Grid to recent hits like Race for the Galaxy and – Tummelson will offer important insights into how you can make your game stand out in the marketplace. During his address, Tummelson will provide tips and tricks for designers from the publisher’s point of view. Questions will follow, time permitting.

Meet & Pitch with Jay Tummelson Saturday 3 PM After Deck Designers are invited to sign-up for an individual, twenty-minute session where they will have the opportunity to pitch a game to Jay Tummelson, the founder of Rio Grande Games. Tummelson will offer personalized feedback to designers about their individual pitches and/or game designs during these face- to-face sessions.

Indie Hurricane! “Indie Hurricane!" is an alternative or "Indie" gaming expo which takes place within GameStorm that features many small press games in organized play, play testing, panels and retail sales at the "Indie Hurricane!" booth. "Indie Hurricane!" was formed by a local Portland alternative gaming group in cooperation with several small press publishers such as Arcadiam Games, Atarashi Games, Berengad games and Crucifiction games. The goal is to expand the scope of the kind of gaming offered at GameStorm and promote alternative gaming as a genre within the gaming industry.

What makes an Indie game? By the strictest definition, Indie games are those which are small press: created, designed and produced by a small number of people or even just a single person. They have smaller print runs, but many are available as "print on demand" through several sources. Some are available in stores, while others are only sold directly by the maker. Retail ready Indie games are tirelessly tested, improved, edited and restructured before they go to press, just like any mainstream game, so you know you are getting a nicely polished final product. Indie games have a little something extra though. Because of the nature of a smaller development team and less people contributing "work for hire" for these books, you can really begin to feel that the project is a labor of love and much of the creator of that project has been poured into the making of it, which give the game character and soul. In addition to running many play tests, organized games and the like, Indie Hurricane! will be presenting several pan- els on game design and production.

Good Luck. www.GameStorm.org 69 A Tribute to Ernest “Gary” Gygax July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008

As we gather this year to enjoy the company for our gaming community something will be missing. There will of course be many dice to roll and cards to flip, dun- geons to explore and dragons to slay. We will, however, be missing one of the founders of the modern gaming in- dustry.

Ernest “Gary” Gygax was an American writer and game designer best known for co-creating the pioneering role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons with Dave Arne- son, and co-founding the company Tactical Studies Rules with Don Kaye in 1973. Gary is generally acknowledged as one of the fathers of the tabletop role-playing game.

Gary died the morning of March 4 at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, at the age of 69. He was in semi-retirement since 2004 due to poor health. Even while his health failed, gaming remained very much a part of his life. Gary was still active in the gaming community and had active Q & A forums on gam- ing websites such as Dragonsfoot and EN World.

Gary is survived by his wife Gail, and his six children, and a legion of grateful gamers.

His legacy will live on…

Please observe a 1d6 second moment of silence for a fallen friend.

XKCD by Randall Munroe XKCD.COM 70 GameStorm 10 www.GameStorm.org 71 What is OSFCI? You've seen the phrase dozens of times or more -- at the bottom of a convention flyer, in the back of a progress report, or on the inside of a colorful, slick-covered convention memory book - and probably ignored it: "This event is sponsored by Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. (OSFCI)." If you are reading this, you've probably take a few moments to wonder "What is OSFCI?"

OSFCI, a non-profit, tax-exempt, all-volunteer (no one gets paid anything) corporation, is the legal entity and umbrella organization under which Orycon and her sister events, GameStorm and CON, operate. The corporation provides year to year continuity for the repeating conventions and a solid base from which floating events can be run. These events have included CascadeCon, Smofcon (1991 and 2005), World Horror Convention (1996), Potlatch (1996 and 1999), Left Coast Crime (2002) and Westercon (1984, 1990, 1995 and 2001.)

With over 100 corporate members, some from as far away as New York and Boston, OSFCI is a diverse talent pool of convention-running experience. Members range from WorldCon regulars with years of experience to people who have just gotten their feet wet in the heady world of con-running. Membership in the group is easy. It's open to any- one who has been on at least two OSFCI-sponsored event committee lists during the last four-year period. All you need to do to join is volunteer, work on the required number of committees and then accept the invitation for member- ship. The corporation holds its annual meeting each May, where the year is reviewed, bylaws changed and members are elected to the Board of Directors.

The Board decides who will be the chair of Orycon and other repeating conventions and whether or not to spon- sor floating events, such as Westercon or Potlatch. "Sponsorship" means that the event falls under the OSFCI's tax- exempt umbrella and may use the corporation's post office box, bank accounts and bulk mailing permit, as well as being provided with insurance and a responsible legal entity in the unlikely event of a disaster. Occasionally, OSFCI will provide seed money for the development of new events or for bidding committees who wish to bring float- ing conventions to the area.

Although Board members often work on the events, the Board doesn't run the conventions - the Board's role is that of overseer, ensuring that sponsored events operate within OSFCI's tax-exempt status, as well as that of mentor, providing a source of institutional knowledge and convention experience for the committees. Each convention has a liaison from the Board assigned to the committee. Each committee also assigns an ex-officio representative to the Board.

The Board is made up of up to 10 people, elected to two-year terms (usually five each year). The Board meets six times a year -- January, March, May (after the Annual General Meeting), July, September and December -- and every- one with an interest in its activities is welcome to attend those meetings.

OSFCI maintains the capital goods accumulated over the years for use by the various events. Convention com- mittees have use of art show panels, computers, printers, a copy machine, hospitality furnishings and video and other electronic equipment. These capital goods minimize the equipment that needs to be rented or borrowed, allowing more of convention income to be devoted to producing the quality of events for which OSFCI is well-known.

As part of a being a non-profit, the general membership and Board of Directors of OSFCI feel a strong responsibil- OSFCI ity to give back to the community that supports the conventions. Often born from specific events, OSFCI sponsors two charitable funds and an award, as well as making liberal donations to a wide range of other charities, museums, schools and libraries - all selected to help improve people's lives and bring the wonderment and joy of knowledge and future to them. The corporation not only offers institutional contributions, but encourages individual ones as well, by maintaining a matching gift fund which matches donations made by OSFCI corporate members to qualified local or- ganizations, such as libraries, museums, schools and the Portland Science Fiction Society, that promote science or sci- ence fiction.

The funds and award are diverse and provide valuable services to the science fiction community. Both funds are supported by donations and in the case of the Petrey fund, auctions held at conventions. All donations go directly to the funds for distribution - OSFCI covers the operating and administrative costs of the funds out of general corporate monies. The Susan C. Petrey Clarion Scholarship Fund, OSFCI's oldest fund, annually gives scholarships to students attending the Clarion and Clarion West Writer's Workshops. The Clayton Memorial Medical Fund is a medical emer- gency fund for needy Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror or Mystery writers in the Pacific Northwest. The Endeavour Award, a juried book award, is handed out annually at Orycon to the best science fiction or fantasy book published by a Pacific Northwest writer. The award includes an honorarium and plaque. OSFCI has also made donations to OMSI, charities, schools and public libraries. Information on the Funds and the Endeavour Award is available at www.osfci.org, or by writing to OSFCI at P.O Box 5702, Portland, OR., 97228.
